Help! I'm the only one still looking like sh*t at the school gates............................

I've got the kind of hair that needs a good blow dry and when it's had a quick once over by me in a rush looks like straw out a midden. Also fat with specks! Never have time in morning for makeup.
Fed up looking like this!
Please help.

Invest in some funky hats! Change your specs? And accessorise.

I sympathise. DS1 started nursery school last week - it's a big shock to the system being expected to present myself before the General Public at 9.00 every bloody morning..... I have been turning out in some "interesting" ensembles. Fortunately I have a big floppy coat that covers it all up and I scrape my hair back into a bun and stare at the floor in the hope no-one will notice me

Easy · 23/01/2006 10:07

I sympathise.
I'm an older mum, and when I took ds to his first Beavers meeting last week was addressed as "x's granny".

So have resolved to update my wardrobe, and never ever step out again without my makeup on.
It was a terrible shock.

Flamesparrow · 23/01/2006 10:10

Argh - I have 2 months before I start this, with a newborn baby in tow... Luckily they are all pretty frightening mums at the school gate I'll be at, so whatever I wear/how I look will be wrong by them (my lack of white hat, gleaming white trainers and gold chains will make me stand right out.... )

lucykate · 23/01/2006 10:10

it took me a while to work out how all the mum's at dd's nursery seemed to dress so nicely, then i discovered the answer, it was boden, they were all wearing boden!, and there's me, accessorising with baby vomit all over my shoulder!

one of the girls at dd's nursery had a party on friday, we were all ready to go and dd said to me 'mummy, aren't you going to get changed?, you look a bit silly!", granted i did still have my, doing the housework jogging bottoms on, but they were clean.

Redreadskinnypants · 23/01/2006 10:42

LOL Lucykate.
I don't have the horror of the school gate
every morning. I just have mums and toddlers 3 or 4 days each week.
Thank God, it is winter. When I go out I put my long coat on, to cover all the stains.
To go to the tots and mums, I just put on a clean top for the afternoon. I still haven't quite figured out what to do about my jeans/trainers combo. The other mums do dress a little smarter than me, and some (not all)don't tak to me. I just tell myself they are jealous of my casual cool.

ssd · 23/01/2006 10:52

hats are a good idea, I'ne got one but dh told me I look like Lena Martell in it, she's an old Scottish "religious" singer!!

pmsl @ flamesparrow!

milward · 23/01/2006 10:57

At the schools I go to some mums look impossibily dressed & glam in the morning. I resolve to sort myself out but never manage.

My tip is to have a nice coat, shoes & bag. Good cover for the snot covered top & breakfast wiped trousers!!

puff · 23/01/2006 11:10

I bought:

some hats (for cold days and hellhair days)
scarves (helps you look accessorised)

a casual jacket
a smart coat
a smartish waterproof coat

I can throw these on over whatever I am wearing (usually jeans), slap on some moisturiser and blusher and feel quite presentable.

Will buy some summery hats for summer - it's the sorting out of hair in the morning that gets me - hats help to avoid all that

Redreadskinnypants · 23/01/2006 11:12

That is what I need, a smart jacket.
I fear the warmer months.
A new bag would be good too. Should I have matching shoes?

Kelly1978 · 23/01/2006 11:14

Am I the only one who really doesn't care? None of them talk to me, I dash in then out again within two minutes. I don't worry about it anymore, I go home and then sort myself out before going out again.

Beetroot · 23/01/2006 11:15

mascara take a moment to put on.

hats or blow drying hair night before

look for de frizz stuff

Redreadskinnypants · 23/01/2006 11:17

Kelly, can I be your friend?

that looks creepy doesn't it?
The reason I care, is because I have to spend time at the mums and tots group. I have noticed though, that if I get myself sorted for the morning, I feel more prepared psychologically for the day.

fairydust · 23/01/2006 11:19

But it doesn't take long to put a bit of make up / blow your hair in a morning - just get up a little earlier.

Arghhhhhhhhh ! I really hate the implication that women who don't wear make up are 'women who don't care'.

Kelly1978 · 23/01/2006 11:27

lol.

why rushi around so you can look nice for two minutes outside the school tho? I have enough to do in the mornings.

I do make an effort for when I go out afterwards, but there is no chance that I am going to put makeup on and do my hair for bloody school runs!
