What foundation or powder for someone in their 40's

babysbreath · 02/02/2012 21:44

Well the title really says it all!

I am looking for something to cover my imperfections and lines on my face.

Are there anyone in their 40's who can help me?

Thank you

bumping this

KWL51 · 03/02/2012 12:27

for a 'luxury' brand you can beat the chanel vital lumiere (i have probably mis spelt it as I don't have the bottle here at work).

But a good basic one is bourjois. Im not in my 40's but have seen these recommended on other threads for that age range. I'm 35 and the Chanel one makes my skin look and feel lovely.

babysbreath · 03/02/2012 15:46

KWL51 thank you for your reply. I think I will go to the Chanel counter. I like the sound the Bourjois one, but hopeless at getting the right colour for my skin!!

Any women in their 40's who can let me know what they use would be great.

I absolutely love bare minerals, I bought their starter pack (get a demo done on you first) for £40 and I have used it every day since. I'm in my 40's and have never got on with foundation before.

Rindercella · 03/02/2012 15:54

I always recommend Estee Lauder Double Wear - both foundation and powder. Brilliant coverage imo.

Rindercella · 03/02/2012 15:55

(I am 41, nearly 42 btw)

eaglewings · 03/02/2012 15:57

In my 40s and love love love Bare Minerals. People don't know you are wearing make up, they just comment on how well I am looking. It hides my sun spots and fine lines.

hathorinareddress · 03/02/2012 15:57

I love Bare Minerals, like hilly I got a pack in Debenhams in the sale and it's great.

But I also love a cheapy Rimmel one called Match Perfection that I bought in Tescos on an emergency (don't ask) and it matches to your skin tone if you get the colour roughly right, and I've had loads of compliments on it.

BelleDameSansMerci · 03/02/2012 16:05

I like Bare Minerals too (I'm 46). I think it's more about your skin type than your age. I've got lots of foundations - I'll give anything a try. I'd second the Chanel Vitalumiere (gives me spots so can't use it but it's lovely if you can use it); Lancôme Photo-something; Givenchy No-Surgetics (what is a surgetic anyway?); and No 7 Protect and Perfect Foundation.

Msarsebiscuit · 03/02/2012 16:07

I am a self confessed foundation whore, Babysbreath, I am also 44, and I think that the best foundation choice is more to do with your skin tone and condition rather than just your age.
My favourites reflect the fact that I have very pale skin - I find a lot of foundations to be too yellow or too dark for me. My current favourites are Make Up Forever HD and Giorgio Armani Illuminating Schizzle ( I might have made that name up ). I've tried Estée Lauder's Double Wear but it looked like I'd had my face plasticised. I also didn't get on with mineral foundation ( for 'didn't get on' read ' hated it ' ). Illamasqua Skin Base is nice but works better on top of a primer, in my opinion.
With regard to powder, I use Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Powder - it does the trick without giving you the whole' Miss Marple Matte and Whiskery' look.

hathorinareddress · 03/02/2012 16:09

I should have said Blush I'm 42

babysbreath · 04/02/2012 12:05

Thank you so much for all your advice, I am going to getting tracking down "the one" next week!

Chanel vitalumiere aqua is vv good

joanofarchitrave · 04/02/2012 13:13

I've actually stopped bothering except in the evening, when I use Barbara Daly for Tesco (finally had to admit that my Prescriptives custom blend had run out Sad). Every person I see in real daylight over 40 looks shite with foundation on. But I'm prejudiced because I think most women full stop look shite with foundation on. There's a beautiful 20 year old at work with an orange tide-mark, my fingers itch for a baby wipe. Nothing is actually going to remove your lines, except gaining a lot of weight, but that's not going to make you look any younger either.

ameliagrey · 04/02/2012 14:48

OP don't know if you are still reading but I have been impresssed with the Clarins one I am using- extra firming.
it doesn't firm at all of course, but it gives medium cover with a stain finish- not shiny but not dead matte.

I don't go anywhere without foundation and w on't open my front door without it- am very pale and have purple under eye circles.

The basic errors people make with foundation is choosing a colour that is too dark and a texture that it too thick, or too drying, or too shiny if they are older.

I suggest you spend a few days going to the cosmetic counters and have a make over- try Bobbi Brown, Estee lauder, Clinique and Clarins.

ameliagrey · 04/02/2012 14:48

stain???No- make that "satin"!

babysbreath · 04/02/2012 17:23

Went to the shops today and had the Channel Vitaluminaire Aqua popped on my face, and I have to say looking at in different lights it looks nice and natural. So I think I may plump for this one.

I'm a Bare Minerals convert as well. I don't like foundation as I find it too claggy. I had a makeover in Debenhams a couple of weeks ago and bought the foundation and primer. I don't look like I am "made up" unlike the sales girls who, IMO wear the wrong colour and too much of it. It suits my skin beautifully. I am 53 BTW.

pinkhousesarebest · 04/02/2012 17:34

Another vitalumiere aqua here. It is very light- I had diorskin before but it felt too cloying.

lizzybennet · 04/02/2012 17:44

Estée Lauder Futurist is amazing. It covers imperfections and has a luminous finish.

I've tried loads of foundations including Chanel, bare minerals, by terry
and Futurist comes out top for me. It has great reviews on makeupally too.

ggirl · 04/02/2012 18:09

my foundation test is to check my skin in a magnifying mirror..if I can see the foundation it fails
bare minerals is the only one foundation that has passed

i also love olay 7 effects touch of foundation cream

MollieO · 04/02/2012 18:13

I liked the Olay tinted moisturiser until I noticed on a hot day in the summer that it had literally slid down my face.

Is mineral foundation messy to apply?

Bunbaker · 04/02/2012 18:15

gggirl I do that as well Smile. I had some pressed foundation put on my face a a Vie at home party and when I checked in the bathroom, where there was a well lit mirror, I could see it all and it made my face look dry and wrinkly. Needless to say it failed the test.

knitknack · 04/02/2012 18:18

I love vitalumiere and diorskin 'nude' (prefer nude tbh)

But for the last two weeks I've been using this by rimmel and it's blown my socks off (am 39, combination skin)

gel match stuff

i've also got the accompanying concealer and it's brilliant - I'll be buying them both again and that makes me happy because of the amazing price!

ggirl · 04/02/2012 18:20

mineral foundation is easy peasy tp apply
just swirl , tap , brush on yer face in cricles
it looks better after a few minutes when your skin has absorbed it
