OMG my foundation is making me look old - HELP!!!

Itsallgonetitsup · 28/01/2012 19:02

Well obviously I am getting older. Am 39.

For the last 3 years I have used and loved Virgin Vie one step face base. Its an all in one foundation/powder. Very easy and quick to apply.

A few times recently I have caught myself in the mirror and thought OMG this seems to enhance my wrinkles fine lines.

I think the matt powdery look to it is what is doing this.

I suffer with shine on my nose (sometimes my forehead) so like this onestep stuff because its matts it (along with my primer underneath on the shiney bits).

So what should I be using instead? I want something that does not accentuate my wrinkly bits but is capable of matting my shiney bits.

Am a bit of a crap novice when it comes to make up so please please help me.

I'm 39 too. I ditched my Clinique superpower all
In one for the very same reason, it was looking too 'old lady' powdery. I now use Dior nude foundation with Clinique invisible loose powder, love both!

ThePoorMansBeckySharp · 28/01/2012 19:08

Powder bad! Switch to something creamier for (sorry!) older skins. What is your budget?

Itsallgonetitsup · 28/01/2012 19:09

Thanks you MissBerta for replying. Is it easy to apply? Does it last well?

To be honest I am willing to pay a fair bit for the right stuff as long as I know it is right.

Hence - why I love virgin vie - have tried stuff out at parties and then purchased. Not as easy to do at a counter.

I am just scared of paying ££££ then getting it home and finding its not up to the job.

I've just been converted to Chanel viatlumerie aqua. It is a mid weight foundation with a lovely powder finish. It's amazing and have been getting compliments on it

I finish it off with a transparent mineral veil powder - so no colour but it sets it really nicely without any weight. Favourite is lily lolo one.

roundtable · 28/01/2012 19:21

Counters will give you a free sample if you ask. I'm trying out the news lancome 24 hour foundation. Estee lauder, where I buy most of my make up will let you return all their items even if it's been used.

Go with a friend and go all around the counters trying makeup on, it's great fun and you don't feel as pressured to buy if you're not used to it.

MissBerta · 28/01/2012 19:50

Very easy to apply. Personally I need powder to set my foundation and being nearly 40 I have tried without over the years and it's a 'no can do' for me, it gives me the finish I'm after too and also gives a nice base for poser blush or bronzer. Quality of the powder is essential though and I am loyal to Clinique, it's just fab. Anyway, yes, buy some wedged sponges from boots to apply your foundation, I use a large brush to apply the powder. Keep it away, as far as poss, from under your eyes, this is where it can collect.

MissBerta · 28/01/2012 19:52

Powder blush, though poser blush could also apply!!

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 28/01/2012 20:14

Another vote for Vitalumiere Aqua

VinoEsmeralda · 28/01/2012 22:48

Another one for vitalumiere aqua although today I bought perfection lumiere which had a better cover and is apparently longer lasting.

BandOMothers · 28/01/2012 22:53

I am also 39 and had the same problem and have tried everything. the only thing which works for me is Mineral makeup...powder. I am using Loreals stuff atm but there are others. The powder all in one founation is SO fine it sits nicely, doesnt sink into lines or look cakey and dry. I love it.

Itsallgonetitsup · 28/01/2012 23:19

So how do you apply mineral makeup powder? (sorry but I am a bit duurrrr when it comes to stuff like this).

I assume I need to in a good brush (kabooki??)

I have watched a few you tube vids tonight but all the girls women on there are like 20!!!

duckdodgers · 28/01/2012 23:22

I use L'oreals mineral make-up, it comes with its own brush - you brush on the powder and build the coverage up as much as you want, I really like it, especially on my nose, I have found mineral make-up is the only make-up that doesn't highlight my open pores.

PrisonerOfWaugh · 28/01/2012 23:22

Blimey, I'm just gone 40 and youse is all talkin furrin to me

Is foundation something I should be worrying about now that I'm of a 'certain age'????

BandOMothers · 28/01/2012 23:27

Yes a good BIG brush....you can swirl it on...all over...and that gives excellent coverage (my skin is pale with some red veins so I know!) and if youhave a mark to hide, you can use a finger to pat it on like concealor in a concentrated area.

It is the bes thing ever. duck That's what mine is, it's the most natural looking I have found and at 14.99 it didn't kill me.

Prisoner do you wear foundation usually?

BandOMothers · 28/01/2012 23:29

Itsallgone God yes...I wont look at those vids! All the perfect girls moaning about one "Blemish" when I have 17 red veins and 40 wrinkles! Grin

PrisonerOfWaugh · 28/01/2012 23:31

BoM - I have a tube of foundation in my 'bag', I use it when a 'dress up' occasion presents itself (once in a blue moon). Don't wear makeup on a regular basis - but should I????

SquirtedPerfumeUpNoseInBoots · 28/01/2012 23:37

Am I using mineral make up incorrectly?

I bought Mac stuff, and it didn't cover anything. Do you all use it on top of foundation? I'm a clinique addict.

Sorry for highjack op.

BandOMothers · 28/01/2012 23:41

Prisoner only if you feel like you need it...some people don't! Maybe you're one of them....my Aunt is 55 and her skin is stunning. She wears translucent powder when she's going out! Nothing else apart from gloss and mascara!

Squirted I think some are designed to be used in conjunction with other things but the one I have is an all in one...so you only put moisturiser on..let that sink in and then put the mineral makeup on.

Mac is meant to be great isn't it? Maybe it's not an all in one?

duckdodgers · 28/01/2012 23:56

Yep band I agree - Im a huge fan!

Avons is good as well, I used to always use Avon until the day my clot of a DH washed my make-up bag in with the washing - the day before we were going to a wedding. No time to buy anymore so I hit Boots in a panic and saw the L'oreal one, which Im very happy with!

2 words- perfection luminere

All Chanel foundations are great but this is the greatest!

noddyholder · 03/08/2012 09:22

I squeeze a bit of super drug vit e glory moisturiser onto my hand and then mix with boots mineral cream foundation. Really looks smooth and glowing but no shine. Matt and powder no good post 40

Eliza22 · 03/08/2012 09:45

I like the EL Doublewear Light. NOT the original Doublewear, which for me, is ageing.

I am fairly lucky in that, with a little of this. EL concealer, and a cream blush, I look reasonable. I recently had a lunch "do" with women I know, but are not close friends. They were genuinely shocked that I'm not around the same age as they are (late 30's to mid 40's). I'm 50 in 3 weeks. I look like I've been "dug up" without colour/blush and only recently took advice at the counters on how to look less tired. Came away with a few key products that work. Expensive, yes. Worth the cost.....he'll yes!!

Eliza22 · 03/08/2012 09:46

HELL yes!! (iPad fury Angry )
