OMG my foundation is making me look old - HELP!!!

Itsallgonetitsup · 28/01/2012 19:02

Well obviously I am getting older. Am 39.

For the last 3 years I have used and loved Virgin Vie one step face base. Its an all in one foundation/powder. Very easy and quick to apply.

A few times recently I have caught myself in the mirror and thought OMG this seems to enhance my wrinkles fine lines.

I think the matt powdery look to it is what is doing this.

I suffer with shine on my nose (sometimes my forehead) so like this onestep stuff because its matts it (along with my primer underneath on the shiney bits).

So what should I be using instead? I want something that does not accentuate my wrinkly bits but is capable of matting my shiney bits.

Am a bit of a crap novice when it comes to make up so please please help me.

Bourgeois healthy mix foundations are very good

I think one needs less base as one gets older

itsall are you near a john lewis because they have loads of brands mentioned here EL, lancome, chanel, dior, bobbi brown etc and their returns policy is amazing. If you buy something and it doesn't do what you want they take it back. Brilliant for if you are a little nervous about investing in something new.

Eliza22 · 03/08/2012 10:15

Always..... Really? John Lewis will exchange just because an item doesn't do what you thought it would? Must you have the receipt?

alwaysrunninginheels · 03/08/2012 11:08

Yes i have had the receipt and when buying the item talked to the sales assistant re what if not the right shade or bothers my skin etc. Each time have been told i can return it if it isn't ok. Havent then had any problem returning an item even though i have obviously used it! I was amazed the first time- have only had to do it a few times but i am very impressed at that level of service. IMO John Lewis is amazing!

MaloryMad · 03/08/2012 11:26

FAINTS that's amazing about JL. I didn't know that.
Buying foundation in particular is a horrid experience for me. I'm very pale and it either turns orange or goes very shiny within about an hour. Most of the makeup counters in this country are so bloody huffy about giving a sample and I've got bottles of unworn, useless foundations that I've purchased elsewhere and know they won't give me a refund.
I'm buying from John Lewis in future. I hope the two local to me have the same policy though Hmm

Back to OP even though it's from a while ago, I agree that we have to ditch the powder as we get older. I still have the bloody awful shiny nose to deal with and I can't wear 'dewy' type foundations because then I just look like I've had my head in the chip pan. Still haven't found one that ticks all my boxes.

Ameliagrey · 03/08/2012 16:08

Amazing- you live up to your name!

I haven't found that TBH.

I know that Clinique will take items back if they cause a skin reaction.

I also exchanged eye shadow at Bobbi Brown because it was much paler than I thought - but I had to email their head office first and they told me what to do.
And I did exchange- not ask for a refund.

You certainly cannot get a refund for cosmetics from John Lewis if you buy online- I phoned customer services about that- because make up is classed as "personal items" . Even if you order some make up and it's unopened- you can still see the colour etc- you cannot get a refund from them.

Ameliagrey · 03/08/2012 16:09

Sorry- that should be Always!!!!!

MarysBeard · 03/08/2012 17:16

I'm 36, 37 in a few weeks. I rarely wear foundation, just concealer, a bit of powder, a little blush - but since late 20s I have found a bit of highlighter on my cheekbones really makes the difference. Puts back a bit of "dewiness" that young skin naturally has (sob!)

So I think you need some shiny bits - in the right place!

WoodlandHills · 03/08/2012 19:19

Now I am in my 30's what works for me is as follows:

The oil cleansing method (olive oil) followed by argan oil as a moisturiser. Then spf30 sunblock on top.

Then I use a primer, at the moment I am mad on avon's MagiX Brightening Primer. And then just use touche elclat on my "trouble" areas, ie the darker bits under eyes, and around nose and mouth.

I honestly am yet to see a foundation that flatters anyone over about 28ish, sorry Blush

DonaAna · 04/08/2012 05:54

39 and use Chanel Lift Lumiere liquid foundation - it gives a glowy look. I also use Guerlain Les Meteorites strategically if some areas get too shiny.

MIL is 72 and swears by EL Daywear tinted moisturizer. Her skin looks amazing.

Medal · 04/08/2012 07:18

Anyone who uses a highlighter can i ask which one you find good? Also hitting 37 and feeling as though my skin has lost it's glow, not to mention lines appearing under my one smiley eye Shock

knitknack · 04/08/2012 07:30

I'm 39 and a makeup junkie - Dior 'nude it's absolutely brilliant but I've been blown away recently by the new bourjois foundation '123 perfect'... I had to buy mine on eBay because I couldn't find it locally but I've since seen it in larger boots. I think the quality of all the bourjois foundations is excellent, but like you I have oily areas and the others are generally too silliconey (not a word I realise!). Ths one is fabulous!

PerryCombover · 04/08/2012 08:41

I loved vitalumiere cream but they discontinued it and I stopped off in a huff

I tried lots including Dior and wasn't more impressed than by the maybelline here or here.
I was really impressed by these foundations ( but maybe my skin care was better too..dunno)
I liked the Bourgois that Cyb spoke about but never found a colour for me..

anniewoo · 04/08/2012 09:25

Chanel and Bourjois are sister companies.

DonaAna · 04/08/2012 09:30

I use Chanel's Lumiere Sculptee powder highlighter to accentuate my cheekbones. Chanel Lift Lumiere foundation and the Hydra Beauty Serum under it also make my skin subtly glowy. And love Meteorites pearls for finishing.

ScrambledSmegs · 04/08/2012 09:52

I don't wear foundation that often as I prefer a tinted moisturiser for everyday, but have the most amazing one for days when I want to look more polished. Future Skin by Chantecaille. It's very expensive but imo worth it. No other foundation I've ever used compares (and I've tried 3 mineral makeup brands, dior, chanel, laura mercier, lancome, clarins, bourjois,...you name it).

If you can't face shelling out eye-watering amounts on foundation -and I really don't blame you, I was feeling flush when I bought it - some of my friends have bought the new Benefit one Hello Flawless and it looks really natural on them. Also one friend has the new Max Factor one here and it looks absolutely fantastic on her. We're all about the same age, mid to late 30's.

poppedoutforapintofmilk · 04/08/2012 12:57

I used lili lolo mineral foundation for about 5 years and really liked it. Recently though I found it was drying my skin and just didn't look as glowy any more. I'm 51. I didn't want to go back to liquid foundation as my t zone is v greasy but after testing quite a few, Clinique, Clarins, Maybelline - I found Diorskin Nude was lovely. I'd say it gives medium but natural coverage and doesnt make my t zone greasy and lasts well. Not cheap but think the bottle is going to last for ages. I asked for samples first which helped me decide and to get the right shade.

izzyizin · 05/08/2012 04:14

Shiseido Perfect Refining Foundation is not cheap but it's worth every penny and a little really does go a long way - plus it's got amazing staying power.
