If you are mid thirties and busy, children, job etc what is your hair like ?

I need a cut but am trying to get some length back.
But I don't have a style, it's a bob type thing which I don't love, I have random curls and it needs doing every day.
I feel I am going wrong somewhere, cannot wear short hair or else I look like a man.
Any advice ?

Shoulder length graduated layered bob with natural curls, no fringe but a bit shorter length at the front.

Kindof like this but without the salon bounce or her good looks to match it Grin

Takes me approx 3-4 minutes with some serum, mousse/spray and a diffuser plus after product.

Flyingoutofcontrol · 28/01/2012 16:13

For the record, layered style is great for growing hair as you can increase/reduce the layer size so it looks less straggly when things are at the in-between stage.

bishboschone · 28/01/2012 16:20

I have naturally curly hair and have a Bob

mousymouseprice · 28/01/2012 16:23

just longer than shoulder length and layered all around, a little feathered at the front.
10 secs brushing and I'm ready to go.

Gertiegoolash · 28/01/2012 17:15

Very short pixie crop.

cyb · 28/01/2012 17:19

I'm 40's but busy, kids etc and I have a bob slightly longer to jawline and into nape at back

I can wear smooth or srumple for atexture

I love my BBH to help me style and perk it up daily

I wouldn't advise short, maybe some better products to keep it looking better for longer

MissBerta · 28/01/2012 17:28

blonde bob, late 30s. I wash it every day. Had it short, like having the length at the moment.

ggirl · 28/01/2012 17:33

I fear I am too old to be included as am 49 ,but I do work and have children so I will butt in Grin

Naturally wavy/curly hair in layered bob with a fringe , I look scary without one.
I can do smooth sleek or scrunchy wild curls , haven't quite managed to do the cool waves style yet . When I attempt it it looks good for about 10 min then I just look like a tramp.

festi · 28/01/2012 17:45

long midway between shoulders and elbows, textured through length with a full bold, shortish, ie above eyebrows fringe. naturally wavey and I do not straighten it.

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 28/01/2012 17:47

A mess.

Watching with interest to see if anyone can inspire me.

tryingsomethingdifferent · 28/01/2012 17:55

Longish (3-4 inches below shoulders), wavy, no fringe, highlights close enough to natural colour not to be noticeable growing out, which helps the grey disappear; it looks fine when just brushed but a mess soon after. It is kind of a default hair "style" with me as I wouldn't suit it short and don't get to the hairdresser often enough to maintain anything else atm.

gilmoregirl · 28/01/2012 18:01

When I read the OP my first thought was "a mess" but I see someone got in there first with that one Grin

I am 38 and sound v similar hairwise to OP. I have some good hair days, mainly not great hair days and some v v bad hair days...

My hair is thick, dry and curly but not evenly curly so on any given day some bits are nice curls and other bits are just a bushy mess. I keep it just below should length so I can tie it up or clip the most offensice bits up with little hair clips. Would love a proper "style" that doesn't require any effort - is that possible?

Will be reading with interest

noyouhavehadawee · 28/01/2012 18:05

chin length bob (my higher chin!), washed everyday and ghd'd unless its a non work day ot my day off and i wear a woolly beany and save it a day of being ghd to death.

GraduallyGoingInsane · 28/01/2012 18:14

Just below shoulder length, blunt cut at the back and layers around my face. Naturally it's a dirty blonde so it's highlighted subtly to avoid root situations! It's dead straight naturally, so it's either down, up in a bun/twist, or in a high pony tail which I imagine looks swish and sophisticated and groomed but in reality looks like I threw it back in despair.

Fleecy · 28/01/2012 18:18

Long fine straight hair, highlighted to cover grey but more a brightening up of my natural mousy-ness.

To be honest, I like it because it's low maintenance. I wash it twice a week, wear it loose on those days and tie it up in ponytail or bun on the other days. I don't even blow dry it unless I'm going out! Would love it to be a bit thicker but i suppose then it would need more work.

moaninlisa · 28/01/2012 19:22

Naturally curly sits on my shoulders
At the weekend when I am casual its curly au natural bit of Aveda be Curly
Through the week I need to look groomed and professional I used Babyliss heated rollers....miles better than hot brush thingy.

Jessicaalbastwin · 28/01/2012 20:39

I am not quite mid-thirties, well only 31. This is what My hairstyle is and the colour of it. The second one.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 28/01/2012 20:43

Mine is long, layered and a bit messy!

I like the unkempt look though, it's easier to maintainGrin

I had a bob for years but got fed up with the straightening and intensive drying required. Now it's longer, it's all a bit more freestyle.

And if I can't be bothered, I can pin it up!

BikeRunSki · 28/01/2012 20:53

You know Mr Messy? Like that, but not pink.

scarlet76 · 29/01/2012 00:57

Am 35. 2 dc. Full time job. Have a shortish bob. Cut into nape at back. Slightly graduated and jaw length at front. Blonde highlights to help hide the grey! I either wear straightened and sleek or natural. I have slightly wavy / curly hair and scrunch it up with a bit of product for a bedhead look. It takes about 2 mins so great for the days I am running late.

Himalaya · 29/01/2012 01:09

Curly and thick. I wear it in a short crop which looks nice with makeup and earrings, but a bit scruffy on work from home days (especially when ita grown out a bit).

I am contemplating growing it long one last time before I go grey, but I have a perception that older women with big bushy curly hair of the kind I have, have issyoos.

tabulahrasa · 29/01/2012 01:22

It's supposed to be like that but a bit longer, and when I've made it to the hairdresser's it does...

but mostly it looks more like this. Hmm

fossil97 · 29/01/2012 01:32

I have similar hair - it basically can't be left to dry naturally or it goes into a frizzy bush. Left to dry and brushed it would be like Hermione in the early HP films. Thick, ill-defined waves/loose curls. I have a layered bob and it takes 20 minutes blow drying to get a reasonable straight look.

I would be very grateful for suggestions of what styling products/methods to use to get the defined waves look. When I've tried it, it looks nice but is glued into some sort of birds nest and you can't even run your fingers through, which is not a good look and rarely survives to the next day!

RealLifeIsForWimps · 29/01/2012 01:45

Jaw length bob, razor layered, tapered into the hairline at the back. I either let the front fall naturally for a more classic "bob" look, of tuck the front behind my ears for a shorter look.

I love it as it is super easy (5 min blow dry, no styling required)

However, my hair is fine and dead straight so probably wouldn't work on you unfortunately.

MidnightinMoscow · 29/01/2012 07:56

I have below shoulder length hair that has lots of layers, and a fringe that falls to the side.

It's pretty easy to maintain and quick to style.

One thing I swear by is using a fast drying hair towel. M+S do them for a £5. It drinks up excess water out of your hair. I dry using a parlux hairdryer which is fast and powerful. I then BBH all over. I clip it up in a croc clip whilst I do my make up and then undo and hairspray with elnet.
