Why does my mascara always end up in bitty little bits under my eyes?

I try not to touch my eyes when I have it on but after an hour it is always scattered below my eyes and looks terrible.

Is it because my mascara is crap?

Hate to say it but yes it probably is, i try other but always always go back to clinique's naturally glossy mascara, never clumps, never strays from where you put it, its just amazing.

my friend tried to convince me to try the new rimmell one out (cant think what its called but its the 1 with 2 brushes in it) thought id save a bit o money so i tried it, never again will i stray from clinique! its arounbd £14 but i promise its soooo worth it!

Katisha · 18/01/2012 08:51

I have various expensive mascaras and it still does this. Not inclined to spend any more money - I don't bother with it these days and just do eyeliner.

MumOfAPickle · 18/01/2012 08:52

See I've went for lancome to try & solve this problem but it still happens Angry

lubeybooby · 18/01/2012 08:53

Use a waterproof one, mine never flakes and I only use waterproof for that reason (maybelline colossal waterproof)

MumOfAPickle · 18/01/2012 08:53

Terrible grammar. Humble apologies.

DaydreamDolly · 18/01/2012 08:56

Is it old? Sometimes if it's dried out a bit it does it. Otherwise I second waterproof.
I use Max Factor false lash effect and I love it

DaydreamDolly · 18/01/2012 08:57

Oh and I'm assuming that you have cleansed the previous days mascara off completely otherwise it'll build up and flake off.

DressingGownQueen · 18/01/2012 09:00

I think it is a bit old, I was thinking I would need to buy a new one. It seems to happen even when it is new though. Maybe I am a vigirous blinker.

I was worried I might need to buy an expensive one, £14 isn't bad though.

Thanks everyone Smile

Expensive doesn't necessarily mean no flaking, though it bleddy should!

Havingkittens · 18/01/2012 10:20

Do you keep it near a radiator? Or pump the wand? This will cause it to dry out much more quickly, even if it's a new one. I recommend, if it is a bit dry to rinse the wand under warm water, put it back in slightly damp and agitate the product in the tube. This should revitalise your mascara a bit and reduce the flaking problem. I don't recommend waterproof mascara as a regular thing if you can help it as it's so hard to remove, you end up pulling out lashes so they get a bit thin after a while.

Some make up artist even put a tiny drop of olive oil on the wand instead of water - but I'd recommend trying this towards the end of your tube in case it doesn't work well with your particular brand.

I always thought that expensive was better but after spending about 20 quid on Dior I'm now back to max factor. I find my mascara always flakes and ends up under my eyes. I read good reviews about the Estée Lauder no smudge stuff but I can't bear to part with the cash in case it's rubbish. You could always test it for me Smile. Other than that consider get your lashes tinted-you don't need mascara then for a couple of weeks until it starts to fade and even then you can get way with just some clear stuff.

HappyWilly · 18/01/2012 16:07

It is because the mascara has dried out a bit.

Clinique (not sure if it is nationwide but certainly at Boots) will give you a free new (trial size) mascara if you take in any brand old one. Their high impact curling one is lovely.

QueenCess · 18/01/2012 16:15

L'oreal Voluminous doesn't flake. Aldi's own brand is really good too.

mrsmoscow · 18/01/2012 17:52

Estée Lauder no smudge is really good and does not shift. It also comes off easily- with Liz Earle cleanser.

I have long lashes and it is the best one I have tried.
I read Sali Hughes in the guardian recommending it. She's costing me a fortune that woman!!

MyChildDoesntNeedSleep · 18/01/2012 18:15

Clinique mascaras are the only ones I have this problem with. Confused

I think their mascaras are shite.

jelamba · 18/01/2012 22:54

Another vote for Estee Lauder doublewear zero smudge mascara. I'm sure I've tried every single mascara going from Rimmel to max factor to Clinique- and they all came off in bits under my eyes. Looked like a panda sometimes. I got the ester Lauder as a free sample and it is brilliant (obviously have the full size one now). It's the only mascara I've ever worn that never smudges or flakes, always stays put. And it comes off with warm water. Its the only mascara I'll wear now.

ScaredyDog · 18/01/2012 23:27

I've found Chanel the worst for flaking, I was so disappointed!

janmoomoo · 20/01/2012 20:56

I used to have this problem, whichever one I tried would end up below my eyes and on my face by lunchtime. You need a tubing mascara. Blinc is a good one (available on line) and also the Clinique tubing one.

101handbags · 23/01/2012 16:41

Thank you for the Estee Lauder zero smudge recommendation. Went straight to John Lewis on Saturday to get some as I have exactly the same problem - flakes on cheeks, panda eyes etc. First day of wearing it today - really really pleased so far.

RevoltingPeasant · 23/01/2012 18:26

Does anybody else use Too Faced? I really like their mascara - about £14 or so for a tube but it doesn't clump and stays put - so far, anyhow.

I haven't found a good waterproof mascara - tried No 7 but it doesn't actually do anything to my eyelashes....

Geordieminx · 23/01/2012 18:33

I get this.. But then I never take my mascara off so that might be why Blush

Cristiane · 23/01/2012 19:31

Yes, Estée Lauder no smudge. Got it from sali's column too. Is brilliant. Never use anything else now

fluffylegs · 23/01/2012 19:40

Is the Estée Lauder one a tubing mascara? Ie comes off in clumps with warm water. Clinique curling lash is like this too and I really like it.

daenerysstormborn · 23/01/2012 19:44

you could try ditching the mascara and getting your eyelashes tinted instead

SlinkingOutsideInFrocks · 23/01/2012 19:49

How do you avoid taking your mascara off - I mean, even if you're a bit lax with your night time routine (which I often am), it all comes off in the shower the next morning, doesn't it? So by that time you should have a clean slate.

I find Chanel Inimitable to be a perfect all-rounder for me. No flaking or smudging at all.
