Not so mum outfits

startail · 14/01/2012 17:47

Lots of threads on mum boots, jeans, fleeces etc.
Suggestions for what an ordinary 35-45 SAHM or part time mum should wear to do the school run.
Must be practical, sensible priced and fit a very pearshaped size 16

Oh stylish ones.
Please help (and can we lower the age band to 30, please?)

Bonsoir · 14/01/2012 18:19

You can wear whatever you like! I've got on a sequin Zara miniskirt, a white shirt, a slightly sparkling navy mohair sweater with elbow patches, navy ribbed tights and blue/grey knee high flat suede boots today - a typical school run outfit for me, pretty and comfortable.

startail · 14/01/2012 18:50

It also has to get passed the Y6 fashion police (DD2 and her friends).
If I had a mini skirt on I would not be allowed out the carSad

So in fact your children are dictating your mum look to you? Shock

Regain control, woman! Wink

Yesterday was a polo neck black top with s grey wool jumper dress over the top with knee high black boots and chunky tights.

Skinny jeans and boots play a big part for me when it's cold with either a vest top and chunky cardigan or jumper swap the jeans for skirts and leggings depending what I'm wearing on top.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 14/01/2012 19:47

Leggings / thick tights with jumper dresses or jersey wrap type ones layered over long sleeved tees with calf length boots. Or skinny jeans with a more casual boot (outside the jeans) and long jumpers (must cover bum). I am at the upper end of your age range and also size 16 curvy.

Shorter (but still bum covering) jersey tops/jumpers over a just above the knee (not mini) length denim skirt, opaque tights or leggings and black calf length boots is another staple.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 14/01/2012 19:53

Today I was wearing:
skinny jeans
tan heeled cowboy-style boots
Breton top
grey jumper layered over the Breton so the stripes could be seen at the bottom and at the cuffs
leopard print scarf
grey peacoat

I often wear a denim mini (about four inches above the knee) with grey or navy opaques and brown knee high boots. I don't like denim minis with black tights or black boots, personally.

A just above the knee jersey or denim dress with a long sleeved top layered under and/or a cardigan over plus opaques and knee high or heeled ankle boots is another favourite look for weekends. I am lucky enough to still have reasonable legs, despite too much cake!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 14/01/2012 19:55

You will NEVER please dds aged from 11-14 so stop even thinking about that!

TottWriter · 14/01/2012 20:18

I find that bootcut jeans or wideleg trousers go with pretty much everything. Wideleg trousers flatter pretty much every body shape.

After that I find that layers have a pretty classic look. I tend to wear vesty tops under 3/4 length blouses, although I wear rollnecks in this weather too. or I have a crew cut tee shirt, and wear that under a jumper. I have a nice loose-knit one with a scoop neck that shows off the layering while still being cosy. And jumpers are loose enough to cover all sins/muffin tops.

I also wear dark trainers or plain shoes all year round. That or hiking boots.

Fashion be damned, I do my own thing and let the catwalk brigade do theirs. I think people who wear what suits them usually look the most fashionable anyway.

OP, experiment until you find a look that you are happy with when you look in the mirror, then find a way to vary it a little while still wearing essentially the same sort of thing. (It works out much cheaper in the long run, too. I buy very few clothes.)

TottWriter · 14/01/2012 20:19

(eek, used "pretty" three times! Sorry, my vocabulary is usually more varied than that!)

Bonsoir - where's the jumper from? I am desperately seeking an elbow patch jumper...anyone else any ideas?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 14/01/2012 20:29

The White Company have jumpers with leather elbow patches, in the sale.

cyb · 14/01/2012 20:31

Dont wear a rucksack as your main bag

Dont wear hiking boots as your main shoes (sorry Tottwriter but OP is trying NOT to look mumsified) unless you are actually HIKING

Dont wear chiffon scarfs. EVER

Pearls studs/pearlised nail varnish

I dont like waxed jackets, as a rule, or pastel coloured coats

Badly cut jeans are VERY aging and mumsy. as are blouses like mens shirts in pale colours

I'll think of some more

Www.itsamummylook.com fab style site for mums. Run by my friend, ex stylist to the a list, diversified since childbirth!

sphynx · 14/01/2012 20:42

Zara has cardigans with elbow patches in their sale.

cyb · 14/01/2012 20:48

that's not a bad blog

Shame about the naffo name though

Cant stand anything with 'mummy' in it

MrsCampbellBlack · 14/01/2012 20:48

Well in winter its all about the coat and boots. So when its properly cold I'm in my barbour arctic down parka. When its less freezing I have a navy wool coat from zara that is smart and flattering and has received many compliments. I have a sort of black shearling scarf thing I wear with it that makes it a little more interesting.

Nice scarfs are good too.

I wear a lot of skinny jeans with silk shirts with a thermal vest underneath but am a different shape to you.

But nice accessories make a difference in my opinion - I like a good bag, sunglasses and scarf.

Sites like nap and donnaida are very good for styling ideas that you can copy at less £££.

racingmind · 14/01/2012 20:50

Can I just ask where the larger calfed lady can get hold of knee high boots that fit please ?

MrsCampbellBlack · 14/01/2012 20:54

Racing - duoboots do calf widths but they're not brilliant quality or styles in my opinion.

That blog looks interesting but needs to be more usable.

I like this one and this one

Maarias · 14/01/2012 21:26

As long as you're not wearing any Boden you should be fine...Wink
I am usually wearing skinnyish jeans with boots (sometimes the dreaded uggs, sometimes something smarter) at the mo, and then a jacket or coat of some kind...some days it's just my gym kit...

Bonsoir · 15/01/2012 08:54

I got my elbow patch sweater in Hartford (French brand).

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/01/2012 10:11

I've really gone off WIT - she\s getting thinner and thinner and wearing stranger and stranger things. Those spotty Topshop trousers and the bright pink ones are just hideous - and as for those Louboutin shoes...shudder.

Bonsoir · 15/01/2012 10:17

WIT is useless when she leaves the realm of the current season, or season-to-be, designer uniform (albeit with pieces from the high street). She has zero personal style. Red magazine is hardly a hotbed of creativity, of course - just a vector for advertising.

Mrsrobertduvall · 15/01/2012 10:20

I am in dd's secondary school a lot and get lots of eyerolling " you're not wearing that are you ".
I work in many schools , making 3 visits over a 3 week period.
One ks2 child asked me on a 2nd visit "are you poor?"
Me " no, why do you say that"
Lovely child " because you wore that last time"
Shock

i have also been told by a 5 year old that she didn't like my shoes. I wanted childishly to retort that I didn't like hers either but refrained.
