Not so mum outfits

Lots of threads on mum boots, jeans, fleeces etc.
Suggestions for what an ordinary 35-45 SAHM or part time mum should wear to do the school run.
Must be practical, sensible priced and fit a very pearshaped size 16

Another one who has massively gone off WIT - those leopard loafers with the gold spikes she keeps wearing, yikes! The only reason she looks good in half the stuff she wears is because, for the average person, she is quite georgous and has a fantastic figure. Agree that she seems to be dissapearing quite rapidly too. I do quite like Red magazine though, liked the feature on trenches in this month's issue.

Love Wendy though. I find it really difficult to put outfits together her pairings tutorials are fab.

Yes, used to follow WIT avidly but some of her choices of late do not translate into good everyday look for the rest of us... what in gods name are those flat shoes that she is wearing with those shocking (in every sense of the word) pink chinos?

I am 35, mum of DC and also go straight to work after the school run although there is no dress code. My staples include the following:

  • Thick tights from M&S with a jumper dress and boots
  • Dark skinny jeans, with breton top, with grey or navy cashmere jumper over the top(but hem and cuffs peeking out) and boots
  • Denim skirt with beige fitted fine cashmere knit tucked in, funky belt and scarf, navy tights and boots

Things I avoid so as not to look 'mumsy' include:

  • faded, too short, ill fitting boot cut jeans
  • fleece tops
  • walking / hiking type shoes

I like WIT

Its a bit quirky but wearable

MrsCampbellBlack · 15/01/2012 12:50

I still like WIT too - she is very pretty and has a lovely figure. I wouldn't wear half of what she wears as think she often doesn't really flatter her figure.

Regarding magazines - I think the fashion in red is actually pretty good as its more accesible than vogue etc.

AmberNectarine · 15/01/2012 14:23

Agree mrsCB, those chinos do her no favours. I like WIT though, don't think she is too high fashion or outré, just a youngish girl who seems to know what she likes (stripes, leopard print and pink), and I think those loafers are fierce!

Also a big fan of Wendy, as we all seem to be over on W&A!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/01/2012 15:49

Wendy is so, so beautiful - but she is too thin and gorgeous to work as everyday inspiration for 'normal' people. She even looks gorgeous in sequinned leggings fgs! :)

JoantheFennel · 15/01/2012 15:56

Damn you all. I now 'need' a jumper with elbow patches.

JoantheFennel · 15/01/2012 15:56

Wendy is pissing me off more and more.

SebastionTheCrab · 15/01/2012 16:13

Who is WIT?!
I look hopelessly mumsy. Must sort it out.

SaraBellumHertz · 15/01/2012 16:23

I'm a different shape to you (and a different continent) but today I was wearing grey skinnies, pewter ballet flats, long line grey vest top, navy and white fine knit striped cardi with a yellow snakeskin belt round the waist and a grey floral cotton scarf.

I would avoid boot cut jeans like the plague. An a line skirt with opaques and flat boots would probably suit your shape well then team with fine knit jumpers layered over vest/tshirts.

Also avoid fleeces and sensible rain coat type things.
