My neighbour wears mum boots with faded bootleg denims, fleece or sports top (or denim jacket) and her permed frizzy hair scraped into a bobble on top of her head. In fact I've lived here seven years and have never seen her wear anything else. I nearly spat my tea out when her husband recently told mine he gives her £700 a month to spend on clothes. I somehow think she's stashing it.

If you are happy to look in the mirror and think "Neat, clean, affordable, practical, won't frighten the horses, sorted!" then that is 100% fine. However, if you do wish your clothes to display some level style/fashion/glamour/sex appeal then mum boots are best avoided.

Ah, but there is something in the middle, which is styling yourself to what suits you. Good quality fabrics, flattering colours, clothing appropriate for the day ahead and that difficult to define something which is when something just 'works' on you.

On an objective level, I don't see how the FLY boots are any more flattering than the mumboots - we are just perceiving them as such due to the vagaries of a passing trend. The clumpy soles and mannish styling of the upper on the FLYs aren't going to do many women any favours.

Sorry, the first para was a quote - forgot to use bold.

This is true, annie.

Most footwear/coats/outfits discussed in this topic are 'mum' because, well, we are.

tethersend · 12/01/2012 16:14

You are not right about Fly boots, though- they are universally awful Grin

countessbabycham · 12/01/2012 16:17

I can also offer the beige and brown version from my line up......

Bet you're all Envy.

Grin

Please don't say anything bad about biker boots,as to own a pair is my current greatest aspiration.....

Biker boots are the new mumboot. I have been saying this for some time.

Embrace your inner mum, countess Grin

countessbabycham · 12/01/2012 17:12

Aaaw! I shall, tethers Grin

Sonotkylie · 12/01/2012 17:48

Why are Fly boots mum boots and not cheap imitation Ugg boots? I have both so its a genuine plea for information. Surely its to do with how the item has been adopted by everyone without a thought for 'style', suitability etc etc?

polyhymnia · 12/01/2012 18:27

Aren't Fly more would-be 'yummy mummy' than 'mum', which I think on MN is usually used as a synonym for 'frumpy'????

bebemad · 12/01/2012 18:38

Was thinking of buying these, are these classed as 'mum boots' Blush

I have a 2.5 year old and 14 month old and I am currently wearing these with knitted dresses and skinnies and long tops. I recently ditched my parka for a "proper" coat because I felt frumpy. I usually have lunch or sick or milk or snot on me somewhere and very often a combination.

Do I pass or fail?

I would say the fly ones were what I had in mind as every mum at school seems to have something similar (me included), Theya re the mumboots of our generation.

The mumboots of the OP are more what my mum wears so should be grandmumboots.

bintofbohemia · 12/01/2012 18:56

crap, really? I love my fly boots. I have them in two different colours! Grin

DilysPrice · 12/01/2012 19:07

Fly boots are mum-boots in the sense that they are a mum cliche (in certain circles) but they are not "mumsy" boots in the sense of "Clothes are an extremely low priority for me so I'll just buy the same things that I bought the last time I actually thought about clothes, circa 1995" like the M&S ones.

There's a big difference between school run cliche (eg Boden) and full-on mumsy.

In the interests of full disclosure I am typing this wearing faded boot cut jeans from Next and an acrylic Top Shop jumper that is older than some MNers.

TheFoosa · 12/01/2012 19:14

don't know about mumboots but I have a pair of converse that I am too mumsy embarrassed to wear
