PeriPathetic · 10/01/2012 19:45

I have 3 (furnished rental)

One contains toys & games.
Another has shoes, dog walking stuff, random 'by-the-front-door' crap and sunglasses Grin
And the other has what I'd call 'proper' sideboardy stuff in it; crockery, cutlery, serving dishes, napkins etc. And photo albums Hmm

They are very useful.

MynameisnotEarl · 10/01/2012 19:48

I have this one.

It contains mostly photographs, craft stuff, laptops & stationery. And random junk

moaninlisa · 10/01/2012 19:49

Wills and Gambier oak- John Lewis do similar
Contains school paperwork
Stationary bits stapler tape odd cards etc
Tons of booze and 'good'glasses
Cost a grand
Really heavy needs 3 people to move it
Love it.

SwedishEdith · 10/01/2012 19:50

Oh, I'd love one. My imaginary one would include table linen, place mats and runners for various occasions, candles and candle sticks, possibly a cheese board and knife (sans fromage, naturellement), good wine glasses, um, pack of cards, matches, after-dinner board games.

The reality would be scraps of paper that have been mistakenly printed on on one side, broken pens, old phones, plastic IKEA place mats, not matching "linen", stuff that doesn't fit into kitchen cupboards, packs of balloons and various spare party bag paraphenalia etc

maxcliffordslovechild · 10/01/2012 19:50

my DD craft stuff, My hardly used card making stuff and lots of batteries and random reciepts for long gone purchases. i think it may be time for a clear out!

ragged · 10/01/2012 19:51

Serviettes, tea towels, drying up cloths & table cloths/covers. It has a glass top & lots of nice photos underneath them. Bit of a dumping ground on top, though.

ggirl · 10/01/2012 19:54

MynameisnotEarl - very nice !

swedishedith-that is exactly what mine will have in it , I am massively decluttering . No more stupid receipts or connection wires I have no idea what they're for..oh no. Everything with a purpose and a place...and breathe

Mainly photos, board games and paperwork

PastGrace · 10/01/2012 20:01

I'm living in my parents' flat and they have a black gloss one from Heals, a bit like this (but not at that price because it isn't glass) with a drawer above each cupboard. It's super.

The cupboards have spare crockery/nice wine glasses, one is an overflow drinks cupboard (mainly a stash of tonic), the third has the printer/paper and jiffy bags and large envelopes.

The drawers are 1) wrapping paper/ribbons 2) napkins and other dinner party bits 3) a drawer of my sister's stuff that she is yet to remove.

At home there's an antique wooden one in the hall. The top has a telephone and a notepad at one end, and mail at the other (I generally dump my bag in the middle) and telephone directories/mail order catalogues live in the cupboard. There is a paper recycling box in it too, for envelopes/junk mail.

culturemulcher · 10/01/2012 20:02

I have an early 70s Danish-ish sideboard. I'm delighted as it now looks very on trend even though I've had it for years.

It has - hold on, I'll open it - our 'not for everyday' cutlery, crockery, poshest glasses, a decanter, decent serving bowls, cake-stand, boxes of candles, napkins.... and The Drawer Of Shame, stuffed with tealights, playing cards, endless cable/wirey things for old mobile phones, ipods, old birthday cards, etc.

openerofjars · 10/01/2012 20:03

Mine came with the house when we bought it and is now in the cellar with paintbrushes, tools, sandpaper and other DIY paraphernalia in it. It looks like hell, which is why it is down there, but is terrifically useful for that purpose.

It is basically made of chipboard and wood-effect sticky backed plastic, with drawers that stick a bit, so don't feel too bad for it.

ggirl · 10/01/2012 20:07

does everyone else keep old mobile phone wires too ??
why do we do that??
I have drawers full of them

ggirl · 10/01/2012 20:08

culturemulcher-there are afew nice danish 70's ones on ebay

not sure they'd look right in my house though

my parents have gorgeous 70's teak one

I think I may have the same Willis and Gambier one as moaninlisa. It is great have it in dining room and has all my fancy china, serving bowls and cutlery etc.

ForwardOcho · 10/01/2012 23:20

I have a 60s Mackintosh sideboard in my 70s house and it also has it's fair share of phone wires. And a sewing maching, work box and patterns. And the cocktail cabinet holds piles of household correspondence which I chuck out every 6 months. It is beautifully made, has velvet drawers for cutlery as well as a slide out Formica tray to prepare cocktails on.
Formica was a very important material in the 60s and 70s.

iWILLdothis · 11/01/2012 05:54

Yes ggirl, it's in the hall. And yes I have old mobile chargers & boxes & leads that I don't know what they're for.... Why???
And about 900 business cards for my small business that never took off & tat from party bags & umbrellas & packets of tissues & an oil reed diffuser & an old purse & & & & & far far too much other clutter Blush

trixymalixy · 11/01/2012 08:36

Mine Is the habitat orbit sideboard, ive had it for 10 years so can't find a picture, but it's walnut with duck egg blue interior and quite retro looking. Dwell do similar.

Pre kids it held booze and posh glasses, it is now full of toys apart from one "drawer of shame".

BleatingRose · 11/01/2012 09:00

We have a sideboard in the kitchen, a squarish one that holds all the crockery, table linen, serveware etc. It also has the microwave, breakfast cereals and fruit bowl on top.
Couldn't do without it really.

BobblyGussets · 11/01/2012 09:09

Ours is a dresser, not a sideboard Grin and we have kids and adult craft stuff in it, seeds for my gardening, table linen, china "displayed" and all kinds of other bits. It is not neat and tidy piece of furniture but it is very functional. I bought it from Hovells about a year ago.

QuietOhSoQuiet · 11/01/2012 11:12

I have one that came from Heals about 25ish years ago, need a bit of renovation as the cat trashed the hessian on the front but it contains

spirits as in booze not ghosts
good china set
good cuttlery set
table linen
cake stands x 2
doilies
decent table mats - the ones used for guests only
a beautiful antique Colclough china tea set that I whip people if the touch it

AfternoonNap · 11/01/2012 12:06

Oh yes - and I love it!! Mine is an old French dresser/sideboard which is quite rustic and charming. We did strip it but then repainted it as the wood isn't of the finest quality. Two big cupboards at the bottom filled with everyday crockery. Two drawers - one for cutlery and one with the phone chargers/sellotape etc. Then atop it has glass doors with 3 shelves with glasses, some "pretty" mugs/cups, egg cups - the works. I love it and it really works in my otherwise quite modern and functional ikea kitchen.

heymammy · 11/01/2012 13:38

We have a fab walnut sideboard from Dwell (can't find it on their website now though) with 3 big cupboards and 1 drawer above each cupboard.

2 of the cupboards are full of the girls' board games, the other has the printer, wifi modem thingy, xbox & dvd player.

The drawers have wii/xbox games, a spare laptop (with a broken screen I might add), pack of wipes and random cables

On top we have the tv, virgin tv box, clock and some photos.

It really tidies up that corner of the living room as everything is shut away behind the doors!

sweetheart · 11/01/2012 14:20

We have this one in our lounge / diner. It has all our good tablewear / cutlery / glasses in it along with things that don't get used often like tea set, cake stands and our tagine.

It's the one place in our house where we have managed to display some photo's and ornaments too.
