BrigitBigKnickers · 11/01/2012 15:29

I have an antique one that belonged to my granny/ great granny.

Similarish to <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=barley+twist+oak+sideboard&start=84&num=10&um=1&hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&biw=1366&bih=664&tbm=isch&tbnid=ql2W8x5mhiyl5M:&imgrefurl=jdstevensstables.com/Old%2520auctions/25%2520July%2520Web/pages/285%2520-%2520English%2520Oak%2520Jacobean%2520Small%2520Sideboard%2520w%2520Barley%2520Twist%2520Top%2520and%2520Legs%252060%2520T.%2520X%252054%2520W.%2520X%252018%2520D..htm&docid=QQS2X6U_WisJTM&imgurl=jdstevensstables.com/Old%252520auctions/25%252520July%252520Web/images/285%252520-%252520English%252520Oak%252520Jacobean%252520Small%252520Sideboard%252520w%252520Barley%252520Twist%252520Top%252520and%252520Legs%25252060%252520T.%252520X%25252054%252520W.%252520X%25252018%252520D..jpg&w=480&h=640&ei=VakNT_iNJ4bE8gOnqrzfBQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=195&vpy=378&dur=19&hovh=161&hovw=121&tx=77&ty=86&sig=106847243590430545750&sqi=2&page=5&tbnh=145&tbnw=109&ndsp=22&ved=1t:429,r:7,s:84" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this but with three drawers and is slightly darker in colour.

I inherited it from my granny when she moved into sheltered accomodation and always thought it rather ugly until I had it stripped and french polished and it looks stunning.

It matches my piano and some other furniture I have in my dining room and we keep glasses in on side, alcohol in the other and all sorts of crap bits and bobs like telephone books, place mats and some of my piano music. We keep a few ornaments and photo's on it.

ggirl · 11/01/2012 15:36

ooh some gorgeous ones thanks for the links, fab french one!!

ideally I'd like a painted wooden one , not too rustic as it's going in an open plan room that is not farmhousey

all the painted ones I've seen have non painted tops , I' not keen on that look.

Nice one on that cargo site on offer but a bit too small

The Next one someone linked to is lovely .

Do consider the French one if you don 't want anything too farmhousey. My (Belgian) townhouse has trois pieces enfilade - basically 3 communicating rooms and this dresser works because it isn't too kitcheny and helps the "flow" through the house. It can be seen (glimpsed) from parts of the living room and it looks "right".

BiscuitNibbler · 11/01/2012 16:28

I have two, both incredibly useful - a lovely oak one in the dining room with alcohol, good plates, good cutlery, candles, place mats and table linen and a pine one in the hall with DD's craft stuff, tissue packs, keys, torches, hair clips, batteries, general useful stuff in it.

I love that you can fit loads in them but they make a room look tidy.

PinotVagDOr · 11/01/2012 18:06

I have to say this past year I've bought so much oak storage and I'm now obsessed with neatness. I love them, I have sideboards and chest of drawers and all manner of bits and pieces in them.

Do it ggirl - declutter and organise. They're worth the smug value!

ggirl · 11/01/2012 18:10

AfternoonNap- I seriously love the french one but it's out of my budget unfortunately Sad

pinot-yy I am getting rid of my ikea expedit shelves , all that open clutter!..what was I thinking

alarkaspree · 11/01/2012 18:11

Have this one Ikea Torsby. It's next to the kitchen and contains wine and food which doesn't fit in the kitchen cupboards.

I would love to have another one to go in the living room to contain all the crafty crap which is currently under Torsby. But haven't found the right one yet.

AfternoonNap · 11/01/2012 18:14

Don't be so sure you can't afford it - I bought mine (about 8 years ago) for €200. you might get lucky!!

niminypiminy · 11/01/2012 18:18

I've got a 60s Ercol one that I bought on ebay to match the 60s Ercol arm chairs I inherited from my grandparents. I love it!

It has three drawers in which I keep sewing stuff, fabric and my stash of knitting wool.

And two cupboards. One has paints and drawing materials, and the other has toys.

mrspnut · 11/01/2012 18:19

We have just a large oak cupboard that we bought from an antiques dealer years ago.

It contains a lot of booze, some paperwork in a concertina file, spare candles, an extra Christmas cake I never got around to icing and other random things.

ggirl · 11/01/2012 20:24

AfternoonNap how did you get it for such a good price? It''s £1195 on that site!!

Aarrggghhh - sorry. The picture was just for reference, though it is identical. We bought ours second hand from an ad in a local paper. Try eBay, local paper, local auction houses etc.. So sorry - didn't mean to give false hope.

mathanxiety · 11/01/2012 20:51

Mine is really old, solid wood, probably hand made by some farmer/craftsman and originally used as a farmhouse kitchen cupboard. It has two drawers at the top and a cupboard part below.

I have two buffet lamps on top, a pewter bowl with a lid that contains miscellaneous lost and found items that I know people will come looking for one day, and a bowl of pot pourri.

I keep large serving dishes, Christmas china, crystal, spare cups and saucers from the 'good' china and things like the gravy boat that I don't use much in the bottom part. I also have two wine glasses containing some sort of greeny-blue solidified goop with googly eyes stuck on that DS made when he was about 4. I think they were supposed to be jellyfish. I used to have two spooky voodoo dolls from New Orleans that someone gave me but they struck terror into the heart of one of the DDs so I got rid of them.

In the drawers I have table mats and a tablecloth, the table runner that gets put out at Christmas and Easter, some silver serving utensils that I don't use often, the emergency candles, many candle stumps and fancy candlesticks, a pack or two of cards, a spare key for the car and some other bits and pieces.

Hulababy · 11/01/2012 20:53

I have just got one, last week infact. Never had a sideboard before. I feel like a grown up and everything!

It is white gloss and from Next.

Lives in the living room, next to the dining table. It has three cupboards - one has the glasses in, the second has the drinks bottles in and the final one has napkins, etc in - and my camera and accessories in that one too.
On top there is a digital photo frame and a couple of trinket type things.

Like this but lighter wood, narrower and with two drawers. The interior panels of the cupboard doors are distressed. There is much evidence of years of use on the top.

eandh · 11/01/2012 20:59

I have 2, one is a solid oak one (in dining room)that matches my dining room table I have my 'posh' china, dinner service, cutlery box/set,cloth napkins, napkin rings, my nice tablecloth and placemats and my every day table cloth and place mats plus candles etc in cupboard. The drawers have selection of spare birthday, blank cards, batteries, dd's red books, Sellotape, biros, Blu tack, camera and camcorder charger plus small screwdriver for the battery compartment of toys.

The one in the playroom is an old fashioned pine one absolutely batters to death but looks great in there, that has board games, the doctor set, toy tool set, small plastic boxes with all the parts to the polly and puppy in my pocket sets. The 3 drawers have craft (paper, pens etc) in one, figures in another (various small figures that dd2 loves playing with) and 3rd drawer has the books that fold out into castle, boat etc

MrsSeanBean · 11/01/2012 22:27

Yes.

Contains little used dinner services (servi?)
