do you go for regulation black trousers and pumps or something more glam?

i'm starting back at work after my second maternty leave and need to overhaul my wardrobe. everyone else at school is a good 15+ years older than me and no real style icons Hmm

what's your school 'uniform' :)

HumphreyCobbler · 08/01/2012 13:42

I wear wrap dresses as they don't need ironing.

But then I am not a style icon Smile

supermama212 · 08/01/2012 13:45

i wear black trousers and ballet flats and then liven it up with a nice top and accessorize it. sometimes i wear a dress - i like Tk maxx its really good prices for really good quality.

christinecagney · 08/01/2012 14:02

Yy, dark trousers are your friend. Dress up with nice top, smart cardigan, poss. A jacket for parents' meetings and the like, with heels too. I am a HT and have a basic uniform of dark skirt or trousers with nice top, if teaching then flat shoes and cardigan if meetings etc then jacket and heels. In fact keep heels and jacket in office so can swap between one and other depending on the day. Warm but smart coat and nice accessories eg scarf and gloves so can do gate duty looking smart but keep warm. As a HT my no no for staff is leggings or jeans or biker boots or dr martens etc. dresses always look good but beware too much cleavage when you bend over. I still shop mainly in new look and supermarkets than if I am in year R and have some playdough mare and knacker my clothes it won't have cost me a fortune .

ProPerformer · 08/01/2012 14:13

I usually wear a medium length dress or jumper dress, leggings and calf length boots or black trousers and a smart fitted t-shirt and cardi if necessary. We have quite a relaxed staff 'uniform' policy in our school really, only rules are 'Nothing too revealing', 'No extreme heals or platforms', 'Smart-casual', 'No Jeans' and 'No large logos, pictures or branding'. I find it pretty easy to find stylish stuff (I'm late 20's) though I do love 'INSET' days - The rest of the staff are in their jeans and t-shirts and I turn up decked head to toe in 'Punkyfish' stuff!! LOL (Have managed to find a few items there that are suitable to wear for when the kids are in! )

henrythecat · 08/01/2012 17:23

Disclaimer - not a style icon by any means.

yes to no ironing Humphrey - I've given up on wearing anything that needs ironing.

Are you primary or secondary sleepy? I think that makes a big difference. Secondary here and currently my 'uniform' consists of black opaques and various black ballet pumps with stretchy thick jersey pencil skirts from Zara (1 black, 1 charcoal) with various cream coloured blouses tucked in (no iron - just hang carefully after washing) or fitted crew neck jumpers (current favourites have sequin details on the shoulders which twinkle nicely when the sun comes through the window in the afternoon!). All with camis underneath for extra warmth in freeeeezing school. Also nice grey melange thick jersey skater dress (but below knee length) from H+M.

I prefer to get a few bits each seasons for school, wear to death then ebay what is still in vaguely acceptable condition and then start over.

doglover · 08/01/2012 17:28

Primary - Boden jersey dresses / opaque tights / boots. These are my wardrobe staples.

Feenie · 08/01/2012 17:31

Can't imagine our head being as rude as to comment on the wearing of leggings, tbh. We are a smart staff, but that would include leggings, nice tunics, boots, etc. (Jeans are for training days Smile).

lillybloom · 08/01/2012 17:37

I'm in secondary. I wear dresses with matching cardis, pencil skirts with crisp shirts and if I wear trousers I always have a smart jacket too. I buy mostly from cheaper shops as even in secondary my clothes often get covered in gunk!

missmapp · 08/01/2012 17:39

we arn' t allowed leggings, jeans or anything too short/revealing- i tend to wear smart, dark trousers and more colourful top or wrap or jumper dresses, opaque tights and boots. (primary btw)

knitknack · 08/01/2012 17:42

I hate black trousers LOL

I live in dresses with boots, wool skirts a nice top and cardigan and the occasional trouser suit.. all with thermals underneath!

whenskiesaregrey · 08/01/2012 17:42

Thank you for asking this, I start as a TA at a Secondary in a week and have no idea what to wear!

Feenie · 08/01/2012 17:44

What's the difference between a dress with leggings and the same dress with opaque tights? Confused
Am genuinely baffled by all these heads who think it's appropriate to comment on what teachers may or may not wear. As long as teachers are smart, I don't think it's any of their business to ban items of clothing.

henrythecat · 08/01/2012 17:49

Feenie - I don't think it's a problem if leggings are worn as you would wear opaques but often, ime, people wear leggings in the attempt to make something quite short more acceptable for work, which it isn't. Maybe it's just easier for Heads to say no leggings at all. As an aside, I think it is very appropriate for Heads to comment/guide what their staff should wear, especially as we are dealing with children so what we wear has to be (a) appropriate and (b) setting a good example of what to wear in the workplace.

Whenisitmysleepytime · 08/01/2012 17:50

great answers ladies! :)

i'm primary but due thanks to coming back to school mid way through the year i will be effectively be a supply teacher covering where needed from yR ti y6! Confused

i tend to go for cotton mix trousers, long sleeve t, jumper and cardi. our school's heating is rather erratic! however my wardrobe is a bit samey.
i'm not a fan of black polyester trousers TBH as they remind me of being a pupil! Blush

i'd like to get more skirts/ dresses but i'm not sure where to start. henry i might have a look at zara for some jersey skirts.

Yes, thanks from me too. I'm on maternity leave at the mo', but want a wardrobe overhaul before I go back. I used to wear black trousers & a bright top, but want to look smarter. Will watch with interest.

bigTillyMint · 08/01/2012 17:52

I think it depends a bit on the age-group - Foundation stage, something old and trousery as it is so physical and messy, but by secondary, revealing blouse, short skirt and high heels. Well that's what DD's HoY wears Hmm

henrythecat · 08/01/2012 17:56

sleepy - the skirts were £19.99, thick jersey, below knee length. Wash really well, absolute bargain on cost per wear basis. Come in camel too. Hope you manage to find some (I checked website to try and and find link but no luck).

Collision · 08/01/2012 17:57

Our HT banned leggings which I was FURIOUS about!

I think that leggings worn as tights is fine and more modest and that no one should wear leggings as trousers anyway!!

I think she banned them because we had a teacher who was a size 24 and wore leggings as trousers and she really looked dreadful in them and so HT banned them for everyone!

henrythecat · 08/01/2012 17:58

tilly Shock

bigTillyMint · 08/01/2012 18:11

I'd better add that she is a good HoY AFAIK Smile

EndoplasmicReticulum · 08/01/2012 18:15

Black trousers, flat boots or shoes. Some sort of top, often purple, and a jacket.

I teach science, so often accessorise with a labcoat and safety goggles.

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 08/01/2012 18:25

The leggings debate is interesting... I used to wear them as tights (never as trousers) with long boots. Admittedly though, I did wear them with dresses I felt were too short for 'just' tights. Hmm, may need to reconsider that when I go back.

Feenie · 08/01/2012 18:25

I think if a member of staff looked scruffy then the Head would be entitled to comment, but I would be furious if ours blanket banned anything when we all look very smart. Although I can see how it would be awkward to have a word in the case of the size 24 lady.

Carrotcakeisace · 08/01/2012 18:53

Another Science teacher here, I always wear trousers, boots and a nice top and have a cardi because our heating is temperamental. I don't feel comfortable in a skirt so wouldnt wear them to school

PS leggings are banned at my school too

TheFallenMadonna · 08/01/2012 19:00

Another Science teacher, and I wear dresses, opaques and wedges.
