Is there to be a review of 2011 products.....

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 04/01/2012 12:58

or can we start one. Grin

I remember in January of 2011 there was a supercool thread where everyone posted on their best/fave products for skincare, makeup haircare etc and I picked up loads and loads of tips and ideas, as I am sure lots of others did.

Well ladies, anyone up for it?

Or if there is one, and I've somehow missed it in searches I'd be grateful if someone would post a link.

Yes please - waiting with interest. (would like to cast a vote for my Keastase Elixir ultime).

miche8 · 04/01/2012 13:18

ok i'll go first, i can not live without:

Hair oil - moroccan or redkens version

Liz earle cleanser

Bare minerals foundation

dove soap

there must be more, will be back

Gillybobs · 04/01/2012 13:23

Dior Iconic Mascara - my 20 year search is over!

Benefit Cha cha tint - fab coral cheek stain. Use VERY sparingly and it gives gorgeous cheeks morning to night

Clinique Dubonnet lipstick - first time Ive ever bought a red lippy that I can wear. Coral red, looks awesome, doesnt make me feel self-concscious

Clinique Almost Powder Make up - a buff of this over foundation makes me look airbrushed and makes foundation last

St Tropez Everyday Aerosol - hate the TOWIE look but am bluey white so a spritz of this twice a week keeps the deathly look at bay

Chanel Nail Polish - amazing colours.

AnInnocentAbroad · 04/01/2012 13:41

Hello Mumsnet Towers - please rename this Review 2011.
For me - Kerastase elixir ultimo, bareMinerals, and (drum roll, please) the whole Style & Beauty thread which has given me so much advice and inspiration. Thanks all Thanks

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 04/01/2012 13:45

I have discovered :

Nip & Fab Dry Leg Fix - looking down at my glossy shiny legs and wondering where my fishscale dinosaur haunches have gone.

Glamoxy snake serum pen - i haven't gained one wrinkle since i started using it last May, and have lost a few fine lines.

Vaseline again - reunited since my teens, i use on brows, lips and lashes every night after cleansing, and take a little tin everywhere to rub into dry cuticles.

[telepathy]

I was just away to start a thread like this as a part of my NYR was to buy quality over quantity etc so was looking for everyones best buys of the last year.

mydoit · 04/01/2012 13:52

Please can I join in? Haven't posted on style and beauty before but I am an avid reader and obsessive collector of beauty products.

I can't live without;

Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish, Toner & Daily Repair (oily skin version) - very loyal to this trio of skincare products, due to having fantastic results from them.

Marrakesh Oil (prefer this one to Moroccan Oil)

Bobbi Brown Extra Repair Serum - Possibly the most fabulous recent discovery for me. Although I have oily skin, it has been dehydrated and dull lately and this has restored it to its former glory. It is expensive but I have a few friends who work for BB and they have been getting it for me. see here

Love, Chloe - my current favourite fragrance

Clinique Almost Powder Foundation - does all Gillybobs said it does.

Urban Decay Eye Primer Potion - the only thing I've found that keeps my eye colour looking fresh until I remove it.

Another hair product, Shu Uemura Ample Angora - a hair mousse which is super lightweight yet adds volume and makes my rubbishy-fine hair feel like silk Grin I'm pretty unfaithful when it comes to this sort of product but I think I'm now on my 4th consecutive can of this one. I love it.

I love Clinique's Exfoliating Scrub and 7 Day Scrub Cream for my face and I've yet to find a better body scrub than their Sparkle Skin Body Exfoliating Cream (wish it was in a tube rather than a tub though)

I am still searching for the one when it comes to a liquid foundation and a concealer. Will keep reading here and hopefully will come across one that I haven't tried before.

mydoit · 04/01/2012 13:58

Oh, forgot, Shavata eyebrow pencil and gel is the best I've tried for this type of thing. I'm a convert after visiting one of her studios and having my brows threaded properly, by a girl who actually spoke to me and advised me on my brow shape, rather than just plonking me down in the chair and stripping my brows bare in a torturous way. Debenhams, I'm talking about you.

MidnightinMoscow · 04/01/2012 14:01

Great thread idea.

Must haves, new discoveries and old favourites have been:

Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish
Liz Earle Moisturiser for dry/sensitive skin
Chanel lipstick - rouge coco ballet russe - gorgeous deep plum colour.
Mac Blooz kohl - black/blue pencil that is so easy to apply.
Estee Lauder double wear foundation.
Royal foundation make up brush - is about £2 from amazon, but is the best brush I have ever used.

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 04/01/2012 16:35

I would add MAC but too many to choose from. Their prep and prime is pretty fab.

In terms of moisturizer I bit the bullet and bought La Prairie anti age day cream spf 30. it almost physically hurt to part with the cash, but it is fabulous stuff and I use such a tiny amount even though skin is dry. One 50ml bottle has lasted 9 months!

Mirrorball · 04/01/2012 16:39

Loved last year's thread, so here we go!

Nars Laguna bronzer

Aveda hand relief - nothing else comes close

Darphin Intral skincare (brilliant for sensitive skin)

Dr Hauschka Blackthorn body oil

Aveda Damage Remedy range - been using this for years, when I stray it's not good news.

Laura Mercier secret camouflage - great for those red bits on cheeks/nose

Moisturising eye drops - I use these every morning otherwise I feel tired my eyes are not awake (sometimes worry that this is not good long term)!

Also thought I'd add my 4 and 6 year old son's beauty regime (stuff I always go back to)!!

  • Naked toffee apple shampoo
  • boots baby wash mousse stuff - so gentle and smells lovely
  • weleda calendula cream
  • 6 year old loves carmex lip balm
  • 4 year old loves my aveda handcream - says it smells like biscuits and puts it mostly on his knees.
BensonBunny · 04/01/2012 16:43

I agree with AnInnocent - you lot are my best discovery this year! I've lost a stone and had to buy new clothes which thanks to all the advice I've picked up on here actually feel stylish and co-ordinated for the first time in years.

Pinot · 04/01/2012 16:43

ooOoo yes I remember last years as it cost me a fortune

Mine are:

LilyLolo mineral foundation. A lifechanger for me as can have bad skin. Pure confidence in a jar and doesn't look powdery or make my skin itch like BareMinerals did.

Soap & Glory Wish Upon A Jar 21 days collagen cream. Remarkable - removes all the dull greyness from central-heating-wind-blown skin

Argan oil - morrocan oil is good, this is intense and therefore cheaper.

Oil Cleansing Method - 30% Castor/70% Olive and drop of tea tree. Amazing.

Vaseline - cheap as chips but great at night slathered on.

L'Occitane 100% Shea Butter. Costs a lot but lasts and does EVERYTHING for EVERYONE. Am a leeeetle obsessive about the stuff now.

L'Oreal Superliners - makes eyeliner easy-peasy

Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb perfume

scarlet76 · 04/01/2012 17:24

Clinique moisture surge tinted moisturiser - hate heavy foundations - skin looks and feels lovely with this.
Clinique chubby stick lip pencil - lovely colours and not too full on
Clinique super rescue antioxidant night cream

Yes I love my clinique Wink

Bourjois blusher pots - I love love love these little things
Vaseline - for many beautifications
L'oreal intensive conditioner - my hair feels like silk after this
Chanel - coco madamoiselle

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/01/2012 18:04

Urban Decay Naked Set Only just bought this but totally in love with it. It's just lots and lots of neutral-ish colours plus a tiny pot of Primer Potion (this is excellent btw but I still hate the packaging) and a decent brush.

Garnier BB cream I'm still not entirely sure what this is/does but I'm quite pleased with it. I use it as a base and then put Bare Minerals on top when I want to be totally made up or use it on its own when I don't. The light shade is a bit too dark for me but I am a Pale Face.

Origins Pinch Your Cheeks - so disappointed with this. Tiny pot, expensive and stains fingers far more than cheeks. Also Origins completely ignored my email complaining about it, so I won't be buying from them again, even though I like lots of their products.

Benetint - I like this for cheeks but hate it for lips

Lancome Definicils mascara Love this. May try Hypnose next time to compare though.

Philosophy Tinsel Town lipbalm this gives a nice pink sheen to lips and smells and tastes nice but it still makes my hair stick to it, so I wouldn't buy it again. A bit cheap and cheerful looking/feeling but it isn't cheap unless you buy it at 75% discount, as I did!

madammecholet · 04/01/2012 18:16

For me, the highlights of 2011 S&B are:

the MN scarf

Peony & Moore handbags

Get Cutie Dresses

Monica Vinader Jewellery

Jack Murphy Tweed jackets

Lily and Lionel scarves

Hush for pj's

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 04/01/2012 18:26

remus i was watching Pixiewoo on you tube today (home feeling sick and sorry for myself) and I was totally Envy about the Naked pallette. Haven't bought anything like that for years, i'm going to order online.

Normally I stick to two pots of MAC eyecolour, but all those colours were gorgeous.

Grin @ Pinot yes we should all be on commission, no?

Discovering new make up on eBay has been the big thing for me this year. So much easier to try new things when a mistake doesnt cost the earth.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/01/2012 18:38

I have no idea what Pixiewoo is but I really hope you'll like it! Urban Decay eyeshadows are excellent but often quite bright - these are all wearable for a 41 year old bat like me! :)

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/01/2012 18:40

And I hope you feel better soon.

Hopefully · 04/01/2012 19:33

2011 S&B highlights

  • Clarins everlasting foundation
  • Beauty Flash Balm - I know it's a love/hate thing, but I get so many compliment when I wear it under my foundation
  • Clarins lotus oil (are you sensing a theme here). Seriously. life changing for greasy skin sufferers.
  • Getting my colours done with House of Colour after seeing so many MNers bigging it up. Really really improved my wardrobe, sense of style etc etc etc.
  • Buying Phase Eight wedding dress after a MNer linked to it. It arrived 10 days before the wedding and thank god was perfect, as there was no Plan B.

S&B lows

  • giving in and ordering a pair of Fly boots, which went straight back. The soles are just weird
Hopefully · 04/01/2012 19:34

ermm.. this phase eight dress

tartiflette · 04/01/2012 19:49

Rapidlash serum. I now have reasonable eyelashes, enabling me - with a smidgen of mascara - to distinguish myself from the common pig.
Was previously a bit of a lash extension addict but this is loads better as the extensions are ruinously expensive and look shit after a week.

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 04/01/2012 20:41

Pixiewoo are two sisters who do makeup demos on youtube. They are both makeup artists.

I love watching them, quite entertaining.

Snap I am 41 also, andgetting more wary about colours etc.

That Phase 8 dress is absolutely stunning, should be posted on the strapless dress thread.
