Hairy upper lip :-/

Pippinintherain · 31/12/2011 21:09

My hair is becoming more noticable above my lip. Very attractive.

Any recommendations for cream/bleaches etc that are good?

Am a wimp so threading is out and too embarrassed to go to a salon.

TIA

IPL, could't bear tweezing all the time. I finally took the plunge - best investment ever.

crazynanna · 01/01/2012 12:42

DunderMifflin Smile DD is not too bothered by her legs so much as she wears leggings and trackies...it's her lip that freaks her out. She wasn't bothered at 9...so you have a bit of time yet!

WillPenn · 01/01/2012 15:06

Ambi, I'm going for an IPL patch test on Thursday so I can hopefully get my upper lip done. How many sessions did you need? Are you totally hairless now?

Ambi · 02/01/2012 06:47

I had about 10 on my face, but noticed a difference after 3. She did lip, chin, cheeks and eyebrows. My clinic charges £30 per 10 mins for as many areas as she can do, so the last couple of sessions on face were combined with bikini. (it's very addictive- currently on underarms) It hurts but it works, I haven't tweezed in about 6 months.

BalloonSlayer · 02/01/2012 08:29

crazynanna my DD is 10 and I am starting to see signs of a tache. She hasn't said anything to me so I don't think she has noticed but the second she does I am going to take her somewhere to get it waxed.

A friend has a DD who already has hers done due to being teased. However, 10 is considered too young for most beauticians to so it, so the friend's DD has hers done by a beautician aunt - which is who I am going to take my DD to.

If she was 13 I would take her straight to the nearest salon and try to normalise it for her. I could have a lucrative career as a Freddie Mercury impersonator myself and prefer to get rid of mine privately without discussing what I do because I have always been so embarrassed about it.

I am determined my DD will not be teased about it as I was and will be able to have confidence. I suffered years of feeling mortified and my Mum was no help at all: "oh a lot of men think facial hair is attractive darling!" Hmm

crazynanna · 02/01/2012 14:12

Thankyou BalloonSlayer....I will talk to my local salon Smile

Any good tips for dealing with redness after waxing? I go BRIGHT red (makes it horribly embarrassing paying and walking out the salon) and then stay red for about 2 hours afterwards.

I desperately want to have it permanently removed, but can't decide on whether IPL or old-fashioned electrolysis would be best - have read mixed reviews on the tinterweb. (I have pale skin and dark hair)

Terraviva · 02/01/2012 21:49

Forgot to add - I usually now wax at home using strips. It's not quite as good as a salon job, but I can't bear walking down the road with an obviously bright red upper lip! (Have no car so can't just hide and drive home!)

Callipo · 02/01/2012 22:05

IPL and electrolysis both crap IMHO. Save up (will probably need about £200 but so so so worth it) and get 3-6 sessions of laser removal at a decent salon. Takes about a year but from the very first time regrowth is much less noticeable. Problem solved. It is beyond wonderful never to have to fiddle/pluck/worry ever again. Best thing I ever did. Compared to wasting money on electrolysis and creams and the time/embarrassment its been a bargain.

PS. I have vowed that should any daughter/niece/godchild of mine be similarly afflicted I will offer them laser facial hair removal for their 16th birthday (or younger, if its allowed!).

Callipo · 02/01/2012 22:06

Get a salon/clinic registered with www.healthcarecommission.org.uk/

SilverMachine · 02/01/2012 22:16

I use hair removal cream, just cheapo stuff from boots and it seems to work fine. I never could get the hang of waxing. I also have a mirena, but was hairy before that anyway so can't say I've noticed a huge difference!

ggirl · 02/01/2012 22:16

callipo what's the difference between IPL and laser?

My had her upper lip sugared when she was younger , bit gentler than waxing I think. she uses veet strips now.

hadagutsfull · 02/01/2012 23:50

I've spent YEARS removing my 'tache! I went through agonies when I was in high school with people taking the piss out of me and begged my mum to get me some Immac, which was about the only thing available then. For years I used various hair removing creams and then about 14 years ago I had IPL treatment which at that time cost £80 a session! I had 4 (I think) and it did get rid of the hair but gradually over the years it did came back. I had IPL for a second time about a 2 years ago but I still haven't found that it gets rid of the hair completely although it certainly lessens it.

I've since tried waxing, both at salons and at home with wax strips, both of which I find work well. I've also had threading, which I prefer, but I can't find a salon locally that does it and I don't want to sit in the middle of the shopping centre for all to see! Don't mind having my eyebrows done in public, but not the upper lip thank you.

crazynanna I would see if you can take your daughter to have her lip threaded. It is completely natural and I can't say it hurts. Maybe a little bit but by the time you've thought 'ouch' its over! It doesn't bother you - and she looks absolutely stunning - but it will bother her.

And callipo - what is the difference between IPL and laser?

crazynanna · 03/01/2012 11:11

hadagutsfull Thank you I am encouraging threading and a local department store do it really cheap so if she cannot take it she can just jump out of the chair and not much lost! Will let you know if I get her there! Smile

hadagutsfull · 04/01/2012 17:21

crazynanna Good luck - I think threading makes the hair grow back finer too so if she starts it at a young age she may not have to do it all her life like me!

Callipo · 04/01/2012 21:04

Pulsed Light (IPL?) and Laser are both light based treatments.

BOTH generate heat that targets in (in order)melanin, oxyhemoglobin and water i.e. heat up the hair follicle and destroy it (basically you are burning out the hair root).

BOTH work by delivering heat energy (from the light) to a depth determined by the different wavelengths of light. Increasing the power of the light increases the amount of heat delivered at the selected depth.

Laser came first so established clinic have had relatively more experience. It also is a bit better regualted (although still beware). There was some debate when IPL arrived about whether or not it could heat up the hair root enough to destroy but IPL was regarded as safer (and they needed to make bck their investment fast!) so loads of high street salons could buy machines, ad they did and IMHO the training may not have been quite as robust (I'm happy to debate this!!). Although there will be some fabulously skilled practitioners working wonders with IPL, established clinics started with laser and are tending to stick with it,cos it works. I suspect it is more about operator than machine but check very carefully who has trained your operator, double check the are registered (check yourself don't take their word, or a photoshopped certificate) and if its cheap then its probably dodgy.

Personally, I would always look for someone with a medical background i.e.not just a beautician, but this is my prejudice.

expensive but you can do it at home yourself so good for those whose dd are effected by this. Having been 'teased' Hmm about this as a child I would never put my dd through it if I can help it, its horrible for them Sad

Have seen this advertised but dont know quite what it is, does anyone else? www.my-no-no.com/nono8800_about.asp
