How can I get the dewy look on my face, without looking oily?

MrsMeow · 31/12/2011 12:40

I usually use MAC Studio Fix foundation but it's quite matt, so I went in to buy something with a bit more shine and they told me to mix a bit of strobe cream (forget what it's called!) in with the foundation before applying, which didn't really work.

Now I'm using the Studio Sculpt foundation on another recommendation from them, but it just looks quite greasy so I have to put a bit of powder over the top to blot it, which defeats the object really!

Any ideas what else I could try? I need something with good coverage really due to a few scars from spots bloody Mirena

Thanks Grin

i'm a complete addict to Strobe cream mixed with foundation, sorry didn't work for you.
there's something from Bourjous called Healthy Mix Serum foundation.
light, covers well and it's just dewy enough.

cornsilxk · 31/12/2011 13:57

put beauty flash balm on first and then put your foundation over it while it's still wet.

Hopefully · 31/12/2011 13:58

Beauty flash balm.

Laura Mercier Secret Finish

I like a dewy look too but think there's a balance to be struck between coverage and dewyness. More coverage = less dewyness and vica versa.

This Lisa Eldridge vid is useful too - it's about acne but the principle for covering imperfections are the same. This one is on foundation.

You could stick with your Mac stuff and use something like this on the top.

Alternatively (as I do) use a luminating foundation (No7 Lift and Luminate is good coverage but dewy) and then touch up blemishes with a decent concealer.

ProjectGainsborough · 31/12/2011 14:18

I found the Lisa Eldridge site via a recomendation from another mner and have picked up a veritable mine of information.

This video covers a dewy basic foundation-y routine. www.lisaeldridge.com/video/17770/no-make-up-make-up/

Whoops - x post! Still, must be good if 2 of us just said it

i love the how to bit of you tube as i dont get out much!!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/12/2011 14:49

Yes to Beauty Flash Balm.

Cream blusher?

mamalovesmojitos · 31/12/2011 14:51

I actually used beauty flash balm for the first time last night, under maybelline foundation, and my skin looked dewy and luminous. I was really impressed.

henrythecat · 31/12/2011 15:26

Love Lisa's videos, really really useful.

I'm quite keen to try BFB in the new year but at the moment I'm using No7 illuminating primer which was designed by Lisa for No7 and it's really really good and ridiculously cheap if you have one of those £5 off vouchers. I tried mixing stuff with my foundation before and it didn't really work (foundation appeared to split like it does when it gets too hot). I use quite a matt, heavy coverage foundation on top and still manage to look dewy without being oily.

Fregley · 31/12/2011 15:46

Don't use powder.
Cream blush.
Not bfb it's shit

garlicnutcracker · 31/12/2011 16:03

I can never see a difference with Beauty Flash - but, whenever I use it, somebody tells me I look healthy! So it must work Xmas Grin Did you know the magic ingredient is rice water??

If you're using a 'shimmer' like Strobe or Full Beam, stroke it over your cheekbones (or where they used to be, in my case ... ) on top of the foundation but under the powder. Don't cover your whole face. It's also good to put a thin line of it along your top lip - use a brush, and do it before your lip liner or lipstick. Put a tiny dot on the inner corners of your eyes. Also try stroking a fine sheen down the centre of your neck, and use it to highlight your neckbones (clavicles?)

I am a bleedin' expert at looking healthy when I'm not Xmas Blush

dearprudence · 31/12/2011 16:09

I like Bare Minerals because it gives a dewy finish but still loads of coverage. Before that I always had matte finish and used loads of powder.

garlicnutcracker · 31/12/2011 16:11

You're right, mineral foundation works really well. I can't put it on without getting clumps ... I suspect due to all my sags & wrinkles!!

MrsMeow · 01/01/2012 14:11

Thanks very much everyone, some great ideas there :) I've just bought Soap & Glory Hocus Focus - I wonder if that will do the same as the Clarins BFB? I'll have to try later.

coffeeinbed how much strobe cream do you use? I was wary of using to much for fear of looking alien like Grin maybe I didn't use enough?

Off to look at YouTube vids now, thanks again everyone :)

I mix it on the back of my hand - so for a 20p size blob of foundation I might use about, I don't know, some 1/7th worth of strobe cream. It's hard to say, I have the two blobs side by side on my hand and mix as I go along. Less Strobe cream in some areas, more on the cheek bones.
I use a small amount, the tube's lasted me over 20 months.
Give it another try, it's only make-up, you can always wipe it off!!

KellyKettle · 01/01/2012 19:40

I use MAC Fix Plus spray for a dewy look. It works particularly well over powders if I'm looking cakey or dry.

I spray it on and then dab with a foundation brush when I have finished all my make up.

It's also good for making eyeshadow more intense. Spray onto the brush before dabbing in powder.

MrsMeow · 02/01/2012 13:57

Thanks Coffee, I'll have a play around later on :)

Kelly, thanks - I was looking at that online the other day. I'm off shopping at some point this week so will have a real look in the shop.

What about Benefit Moonbeam or Highbeam?

SoFreshNSoClean · 02/01/2012 17:02

I think you have to experiment with products to find combinations that suit your own skin, unfortunately.

For me (combination skin) I need a good primer (love the Nars one), a light foundation (Estee Lauder doublewear light is great) and then a dab of Nars illuminator on my cheeks and set the lot with Bare Minerals mineral veil.

Chandon · 02/01/2012 17:56

I really like benefit You Rebel tinted moisturiser for adewy polished non matte look. and use their Boiiing concealer on spot scars
