i go to a ridiculously expensive hair salon and have for the last 5 years or so (wins hairdresser of the year type comps in london)

all the girls are tres glam and lovely with beautiful tresses
i go in and every six blardy weeks i come out with the same sodding cut, no matter what i ask for

i always come out looking like Karen O from the yeah yeah yeahs.

only on me its mumsy and quite frankly shit.

my face needs big hair, if i HAVE to have a bob i want a bob that is longer at the side than the back, you know, trendy

i get a bob that is longer at the back, every sodding time.
im growing it and its just looking mumsier and mumsier !

what can i do? my hair is fine, but loads of it and it does exactly as its told. i used to have a long blonde trendy hair.
now i look like i did when i was 9.

dont say just stop going cos i just cant....dunno where else to go and feels disloyal! she is a brilliant hair dresser, does magazine shoots and all sorts, lovely girl, but on me i get the Karen O or nothing...

help me....

She is clearly not a brilliant hairdresser if ignores you. There's an issue of trusting and being guided by hairdresser so you don't have anything that won't suit your hair or face but sounds like this is more than this.

I have had my share of bad haircuts (the one that made me look like I was growing out a shaved head, the one that made me look like 1982 Anna ford and not in a good way)... I binned the hairdressers after talking to them as wasn't happy after that they responded.

Have found one now who does listen yet also advise what will /wont work

BloooCowWonders · 20/12/2011 21:48

So brilliant but doesnt listen? Doesn't sound like a decent hairdresser..

FringeEvent · 20/12/2011 21:55

Have you tried collecting pictures of preferred styles to show her, or have you only described what you want? Might just be a communication breakdown (or her not paying attention), photos could possibly get the message across more clearly.

You might just need to be extra-super-assertive on your next visit! Prompt her to discuss it with you in detail; tell her again what you want / don't want but then ask her to explain to you what she will be doing with your hair this time to give you the 'different' style you want, before you let her loose with the scissors - hopefully she'll be flattered to have the opportunity to show off her expertise, but it also gives you a chance to catch her out early if she's not planning on doing anything new, and push for her to suggest an alternative style.

ThatVikRinA22 · 20/12/2011 22:18

have pointed out pics in their bloody glossy mags that they buy...ok and the like.

still come out with the same style. over and over again. its like ground hog day at the hairdressers.

next time i go, im taking a pic of the 30yr old me, with long, blonde, beautifully styled hair.

im sick of the school girl look.
it used to be side parted, blonde and long.
now ive got middle parted, with salt and pepper streaks cos she is too scared to make it blonde, (it suited me blonde) and the karen o look....

once upon a time, people used to stop me in the street and ask where i got my hair cut.
it wasnt there....

but i fear if i try and go back to the place i used to have it done at the hair dresser will have long since moved on, in fact i know he will. 10 years ago that was.

maybe i am trying to recapture my best years through my hair...Confused
she does a good cut, really. looks well groomed, but just not what i want!

have you tried Hari's on brompton road? www.harissalon.com/

I only let these guys cut my hair...and sometimes they look for hair models and thats when I go for free.

another lady comes and does my treatments, but thats because I'm specific about color and treatments.

MaMattoo · 21/12/2011 00:04

Letitia at baker st! I got out of my curly very short mop...having said that, I went out to change style and colour radically. Went back to my old hairstylist and now they know exactly what kind of change I can be capable of liking and the rut is gone!
Your head your choice. Plus you pay so even more reason to come out happy!

browneyesblue · 21/12/2011 00:11

Brilliant she may be, but she's not working for you. Seriously, try someone else. What's the worst that can happen? You are already getting a cut you hate.

I highly recommend Brett at TommyGuns on Brewer Street, but honestly all of the guys there are fab. He'll listen, but he'll also tell you straight if he thinks you're wrong. Perfect for de-rutting Xmas Grin

eandz · 21/12/2011 00:28

letita on baker st? where on baker st? I might be willing to give her a try. south ken is too far for me.

LordOfTheFlies · 21/12/2011 00:33

Trouble with alot of the salons is the music is on so feckin loud they can't hear me!

Once I tried a restle, before DS was born. I came out looking like Hayley Cropper from Corrie. Not a good look.

Another time I said "I need to tie my hair back for work" I got a graduated, long at the front, razored at the back bob.

OP take photos/magazine pictures and have a pre-cut assessment, preferably somewhere quiet.!

LordOfTheFlies · 21/12/2011 00:35

Restyle not restle. I didn't wrestle the hairdresser, I was 2 weeks away from giving birth.

RealLifeIsForWimps · 21/12/2011 00:46

Lynn or Shaun at O'Sullivans near the Savoy. Brilliant.

ThatVikRinA22 · 21/12/2011 11:09

sorry - i think ive misled you on my location unintentionally! they have one branch of the salon up north, and thats where i go. The big man himself i think travels between the salon here and the london salon.

but i am oop north.

maybe i should get a cut with the top fella....only problem with that is i think a simple cut is about £70....but i should check it i guess. change could be as good as a rest.

OP posts:
RealLifeIsForWimps · 21/12/2011 13:01

Ah, ok. Prob not worth the trip down South then.

Sometimes I think the "big name" salons are a bit crap, or at least they are staffed by people who just want to cut cool styles, but don't match that to the client's wants- they assume everyone spends 2 hrs a day styling their hair. A good independent is often better because they're relying on recommendations, not just the brand name.

KWL51 · 21/12/2011 13:14

have to agree with wimps, i was a slave to Toni & Guy for a long time but always left feeling slightly disapointed. Became a sahm and could no longer afford just short of £200 for a cut and highlights with the top stylist/colourist and used a local salon and have never looked back.
I've changed stylist a couple of times due to them leaving etc but always get as good cut and leave feeling good about my hair. Im just venturing back into world of highlights and again have had a couple of consulatations and legthy discussions before finally boooking in.
Ask around, ask friends who's hair you like where teey get thiers done.

VirgoGrr · 21/12/2011 13:30

I'm pissed off with my hair. I've just moved and had to leave a fantastic stylist who used to listen to me and give me a fantastic cut that took 10 years off me.

I've just taken the plunge and gone to a local stylist. I explained, showed her a photo of me just after I'd had it cut last time, completely ignored me.

She did that much tatting about with it, it looked ok when I left, but looks awful after washing and my attempts at styling. I DON'T want to have to use f'ing straighteners every day to make it look like I'm not crazy. Please let me find someone that doesn't want to give me a mum haircut, I'm 35 and I feel 25.

VirgoGrr · 21/12/2011 13:35

I'm a bit sceptical about the listening skills of the 'names' too. I went to Vidal Sassoon a number of years ago and didnt go back because the stylist thought it was a great idea to cut a 2" square patch on the back of my head to 1/2 inch long "to make it lie better, darling" Hmm Took years to grow that bit back.

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 21/12/2011 13:37

I live in Bucks and have a fantastic Salon locally.

Only found it when I had my back op about 3 years ago and had to have my hair washed as wasnt able to shower and get stitches wet.

Anyway, after travelling into London for years and following the same hairdresser around I have found somewhere local, they are brilliant.
The girls are glam but not 'up themself' they listen and I always leave happy with my hair. Inbetween cuts/colours I can pop in for a fringe trim for free - the owner has now become a friend and the girls are all local and trained to a high standard.

They know how fussy I am with my hair and always take their time and block out longer than needed for me. Grin

BrianButterfield · 21/12/2011 13:46

I have long hair and don't go to the hairdresser often. It grows fast and I'm sentimental about it - I'd happily have it chopped off to sort of shoulder level and then grow it out for a while, and just do that every six months. But they will never take enough off! They ask how much I want off, I say "oh, you can take loads off, three/four inches" (indicating with my fingers) and they then proceed to cut a centimetre off, say "is that about right?" and when I say "oh no, honestly, you can take LOADS more off than that" add a scant millimetre or so to it. I never seem to lose any length at all and it's just getting longer and longer, which makes it worse, because they see my long hair and think I must be really attached to the length! They ask me, I tell them, they ignore me. Every time.

BrianButterfield · 21/12/2011 13:47

Grr...I'm not sentimental about it.

SootySweepandSue · 21/12/2011 13:52

Totally feel your pain OP. My last hairdresser gave me a short bob, despite the fact that my hair is mega curly and can only be worn in a bob if it is straightened with irons. My hair is so curly it takes at least 45 mins to straighten. I have an 18 mo and I can basically dream about having that amount of time to do my hair (and have bloody lethal straighteners lying around). I did not return to her salon and am currently salonlessSad.

SootySweepandSue · 21/12/2011 13:53

Ps - if anyone can recommend anywhere in London where the stylists know how to cut /style curly hair I would most appreciate it Grin

pocketandsweet · 21/12/2011 13:59

Hah BrianButterfield you made me laugh out of self recognition. My hair grows quickly and I tend to let it grow for a few years and then get tired of it being long and go get it all lopped off (Emma Watson pixie style.... Although I'm not nearly so cute). Most hairdressers just freak out at the prospect of cutting it that short when it is long and start snipping a cm at a time. I end up having to coach them through it.... I suppose they are terrified of having a freaking out customer.

ThatVikRinA22 · 21/12/2011 14:14

thing is i do get a good cut, technically its brilliant, it always looks the same when i do it as when she does, its just that its the same cut every time.

ive also just had highlights again and she seemed scared of just doing it - i paid for full head and actually ended up with half because she mixed the highlights with a brown (my natural shade anyway!)

i may just need to be more insistent about what i want. i used to go to a toni and guy, and thats where i had my best cut ever, it was just perfect but im wary of going back there because i know the stylist who used to do it wont be there anymore.

atm i pay about £35 per cut.
with highlights its about £85.
its not extortionate to say its a named salon, i just think my hairdresser seems to only be able to give me the cut she gives me, and nothing else, and im afraid of asking to see another stylist in case it offends.

OP posts:
JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 21/12/2011 14:22

I thought all T&G stylists were all taught to cut hair the same? So in theory if you take a pic of what you used to look like then someone will be able to do it?

I dont like the 'big name' salons. Too many horror stories.

ThatVikRinA22 · 21/12/2011 14:25

i dont go to a Toni and Guy now.

its another big name salon but there are only a couple of them - this is not a franchise i go to.

im just going to take a pic of me with the hair i used to have and ask for that. i know my hair will do it cos its me!
