Land's End coats - come and share

JosieRosie · 28/11/2011 13:39

Well the weather appears to be on the turn and rapidly getting colder - I guess it had to happen sometime Smile

I know there are lots of Land's End fans on here - they sound lovely and warm but I'm a bit concerned about looking like the Michelin Man. I've got 34GG bust which is a PITA and I'm not a waif-like build in general. What would you advise about something like this:

grey coat

All advice gratefully received
TIA

I am not blessed in the nork department, but am a tall 14 and have that coat but not in shimmer. As the down is so light, and the coat is nicely fitted, you don't look like a michelin man. And are very snug and cosy Grin

love mine for dog walking and standing by football pitches. agree may not be high fashion but very practical. i don't feel enormous...but have to confess keeping warm is a higher priority. from time to time they discount them heavily...i got one of mine for 50 reduced down from 150.

niminypiminy · 28/11/2011 14:17

Hmm. While we are talking about Lands End coats, does anyone have any experience of their non-down coats? I'm currently stalking this one in the purple, which looks very good value. But is it? Has anybody ever had a cloth coat from Lands End?

dreamingofsun · 28/11/2011 14:33

not had a wool coat, but have a cloth coat which is great. quality of everything i've had from them has been excellent. my only negatives have been that sometimes the sizing on things can be overgenerous and bit bagging/old lady ish - not always though. plus you have to pay for postage returns. quality and attention to detail, with lots of little extras is great.

Gingefringe · 28/11/2011 15:56

I've fancied a down coat but the sizing seems strange. I'm 12/14 so would a Small size be suitable? Next size up seems to be a 14/16 which I anticipate would be huge on me.

Does anyone have experience of their sizing? Oh, any discount codes would also be greatly appreciated.

nicknamenotinuse · 28/11/2011 16:04

Their coats are amazing and so warm, I will never ever ever buy a coat from anywhere else ever. Get one!!!

dreamingofsun · 28/11/2011 16:10

i get medium which they say is 10-12 but in UK size is 14-16 (must remember to flash it more so people think i'm smaller). if you click on size it will tell you uk equivalent (they quote us sizes)

JosieRosie · 28/11/2011 21:14

Thanks very much everyone - you have all convinced me! I've ordered the coat above in a medium (size 14-16) - the reviews seem to say that sizes come up big so hopefully I'll be ok Smile

This coat may be warm, but anyone over the age of forty is in danger of looking like mutton dressed as lamb if wearing it!

Not to mention the price......

Who, in their right mind pays such inflated prices for a fashion, 'statement?'

cruelladepoppins · 03/12/2011 18:02

In general I find their stuff is functionally good - the waterproofs are waterproof, things don't wear out quickly, it all keeps its shape. They have a lifetime guarantee. I buy most of my stuff in the sale but I wouldn't criticise people for paying more to get exactly what they want.

It is American sizing so it's definitely large.

JosieRosie · 18/12/2011 22:02

Just had to come back and say that I'm completely chuffed with my coat! It's toasty warm, like wearing a sleeping bag, but very non-puffy and even has a waist sewn in. I'm really impressed and may look at buying another style when I have some money after Xmas. Thanks everyone! Smile

ive got the squall parka for dog walking/watching my boys play football/rugby/hockey and its waterproof and warm. on the large side though. i prefer it to my northface tri climate one.
ive been looking at the down parkas but having spent the last few years looking like a michelin man without wearing a puffy coat, i dont want anything too bulky.

OneHandFlapping · 19/12/2011 11:09

Xmas Shock at anyone thinking ANY Landsend coat is inappropriate for an over forty! WTF are we supposed to wear? Shrouds?

JosieRosie · 19/12/2011 11:37

OneHand, I've also seen people on here take the other view - that they are old git clothing and to be avoided like the plague if you're under 90. Take no notice Wink

FluffyMummy123 · 19/12/2011 11:53

i have the shimmer one
its not at ALL shimmery
am a 14
have a M
they are HYGE

JosieRosie · 19/12/2011 12:01

Same here iCod - I usually wear 14 but sometimes 16 coz of massive chest. M is just fine on me.

OneHandFlapping · 19/12/2011 12:43

Josie, I was of the old-git-clothing point of view too.

JosieRosie · 19/12/2011 12:45

OneHand Grin

I'm no fashionista but don't want to dress like a 80 year old either. However I love being warm more than I love looking trendy so I was prepared to wear an unflattering coat so long as it was toasty. I wasn't prepared for a nicely fitted and flattering coat which really is like wearing a duvet. Result!

crazyspaniel · 19/12/2011 13:22

I've just bought the same coat as Josie, and love it. I can't believe that I've only just discovered down coats after all those years of dog walking in the freezing cold. If only I'd known earlier!

auldspinster · 19/12/2011 13:41

I love my squall parka, it zips up right to the chin and the hood has a lip so my glasses don't get soaked if it's raining. I can go out with just a short sleeved top underneath and stay cosy.

kitkat1967 · 19/12/2011 16:11

so... am looking at these Down Coats in the Sale - I am a size 12 top (10 bottom) - is a Small what I need to go for? - even over a few layers?
thanks Xmas Smile

JosieRosie · 19/12/2011 16:13

kitkat I'm a 14-16 and I wear medium with up to four thin layers inside. It's just lovely and so warm that you really don't need thick woolly layers. So yes, I would say you should go for a small Smile

OP posts:
kitkat1967 · 19/12/2011 16:37

thanks Josie - may order now - am looking at this one in the sale - Down Coat

JosieRosie · 19/12/2011 16:40

Do it do it do it! It's like wearing your duvet all day Smile

kitkat1967 · 19/12/2011 16:53

hmm... maybe one for DD as well - we have both been freezing on the pitch side lines. Guess she's an XS (& petit) - but who would get the lovely Angel Blue version???
do you think there will be any other offer codes if I wait a few more days - or should I be grateful for the sale price and free delivery?
