Any "good skin" tips?

Sigh. I used to look all right no matter what I did, but since I've passed my mid-20's I am a total hag if I skimp on sleep. :( Seriously, we're talking full on Picture of Dorian Gray, here.

What can you do to improve your skin's "glow", for lack of a better word, than just the usual water-and-sleep advice? (Though I'll be doing that too! :) )

No make up. No soap. Wash with water and use a cheap but effective skin cream...

Hopefully · 23/11/2011 18:51

Oil cleansing method, a night oil, regular exercise and enough water to keep you hydrated.

CheerfulYank · 23/11/2011 18:53

Thanks! :) Keep 'em coming.

What is night oil though? Confused

Exfoliation and lots of vigorous cream rubbing like when they do a facial anything to get the blood pumping.

Foundation with reflectors in?

Blusher and bronzer - don't be afraid of it but don't go Jodie Marsh either.

Tinted moisturiser.

If my skin is feeling a bit tired and lacking bounce I add a drop of vitamin e oil to my usual moisturiser (body shop do a nice vit e oil for about 8quid and it lasts aaages). Gives a nice dewy look once I apply foundation too.

the other day, I used a scrub wash pad thing i found, but it left my skin all taught. I could not find any moisturiser, so I used some Johnsons baby lotion, just to get rid of the uncomfortable feeling.

An hour later I put my make up on, and my skin was really glowing, it looked really nice, so now it is my new routine.

Always wear moisturiser with at least SPF15 sun protection factor.

I am 53 and have good skin. I don't know whether it is luck or because I do the following:
Never go to bed without thoroughly cleansing and moisturising my skin
Wear SPF15 moisturiser
Wear very little make-up - I wear tinted moisturiser and blusher for work ot going out, but on days at home I have nothing but moisturiser on my face.
Exfoliate from time to time
Keep my face out of the sun.
Don't use soap

I don't use expensive skincare products either, especially for cleansing. I read somewhere that you can skimp on cleansing products because they don't stay on your skin.

I find that foundation is very ageing on my skin and tend to use tinted moisturiser instead. With a bit of blusher as well - I currently have this one and it is brilliant and gives a me the right amount of colour without looking artificial.

Estee Lauder Idealist Illuminating Serum.

My skin has also improved since using an oil cleanser (Shu Uemura) and cut down on eating a lot of sugar (sadly!)

Dermalogica, exercise and a good diet with lots of nuts and oily fish.

I do the coconut oil too, you only need small amounts. My skin looks fab with in. I got a massive tub from holland and barrett, I also put a dolop of it I the bath, use it on my nails and as a hair conditioner. It is fab stuff' just dont use it on a morning before applying make up as your make up can go streaky.

Aqueous cream and a flannel to cleanse. Always moisturise with an spf15 and avoid the mid day sun. Healthy diet, regular exercise and 8 hours sleep work well for most people.

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone!

Trills that is most helpful. :o

I use hideously expensive Claris night oil, but I have had it 5 months and only used about 10% of the bottle, if that.

CheerfulYank · 26/11/2011 05:01

One thing I've just remembered now that I'm home visiting my parents...their sauna! I took a sauna almost every night throughout the winter and autumn when I was growing up and always had good skin. You sweat it all out, then have a good exfoliating, then tighten everything back up with cold water.

I need to visit them more often... :o

Try the Oil Cleansing Method. Castor Oil (about 20% if normal skin) and something like sunflower oil, even Rice Bran Oil. your skin will look so much less dull and grey almost instantly and over time your skin tone will improve (and you will have baby soft skin).

I personally only use a castor oil OCM blend twice a week, the other nights it's softer oils. I can see a difference within a few days if I forget to use it.

Lots of water and exercise (ha, none of that for me) and try and go make up free when you can to let your skin breath.

Chandon · 26/11/2011 10:20

regular exercise, or even a walk really helps complexion more than anything (fresh air!).

And on an off days I use "You rebel" Benefit tinted moisturiser, but it does not suit everyone's skin tone (mine is a bit olive-y)

hiddenhome · 26/11/2011 10:23

OCM
Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant a couple of times a week

Graciescotland · 26/11/2011 12:28
