Barbour Jacket - do you have one?

Bellavita · 20/11/2011 19:14

I like this jacket. I tried it in and it fits lovely.

But I really fancied a waxy one but am doubtful if these are as warm as the quilted ones? Especially as they are more £.

If you have a Barbour, which one do you have?

Also, do you think Barbour are going to be forever fashionable?

I have this one, it's not that warm. IME the heavy waxy ones are warmer. As a lighter one I prefer the unlined waxy one to my quilted one.

Have actually hardly worn the quilt as they've become a bit over - exposed, they are everywhere!

FlossieFromCrapstonVillas · 20/11/2011 19:24

I have a quilted international. I wore it all through the snowy cold weather and it was perfect.

bemybebe · 20/11/2011 19:25

Oh, yes, I love my Beaufort (heavy waxy lined one). Also have lightweight quilted black one.

dexter73 · 20/11/2011 19:27

I have that jacket in purple. I love it and it is great for this weather but is not the warmest jacket. It is as warm as wearing a fleece jacket.

Bellavita · 20/11/2011 19:52

Thanks for your replies.

I tried the quilted one on in Fenwicks where availability for the other styles was very limited so was unable to try a waxed jacket on.

I need to find somewhere that stocks everything so I can look at all options. I know I can order from Barbour directly but am loathe to order £££££ all at once.

I have the Barbour Arctic Parka and love it. It's very warm but not stifling for going in shops etc.

JaneFeestelijkBierdekijn · 20/11/2011 19:59

I have two, an autumn utility with the furry collar (can't remember exact style) which is v v warm, and a thinner utility mac which has not got the padded lining and thus isn't that warm. The ones that say order a size larger are generally the warmer, thicker ones.

I got mine both half price, look around for online sales.

Vajazzle · 20/11/2011 20:02

Just about to post Barbour or belstaff?? Any helpful hints?

Bellavita · 20/11/2011 20:02

Jane, good point about the sales. I may just hold off until after Xmas in the hope I can grab a bargain.

There's 20% off at my my wardrobe see other thread. Really want a belstaff, are they overpriced or will I really wear it forever?? Sorry if changed the thread?!!!

JaneFeestelijkBierdekijn · 20/11/2011 20:13

I have a couple of Belstaffs too - a second hand one from ebay which smells lovely though a bit big as it's a mens one, and a proper job womens trialmaster with armour as I ride a bike.

I'd say don't bother with a belstaff unless you actually ride, as they are kind of technical equipment really thus the price tag. (as well as being ponced up Italian versions of the original!)

so Barbour is the way to go if you are just after a fashion-type nice looking functional thing.

I don't find them terribly waterproof though, either of them! So the thicker the better imo.

ForwardOcho · 20/11/2011 20:14

Because I live an hour's drive from the Barbour factory, I have three. I have the heavier (not waxed) international jacket and it is toasty. My daughter wore it all through last winter's horrendous snow and didn't complain of the cold. The other two are traditional - a navy waxed Bedale and a brown utility. They are windproof, but need insulation for very cold weather. I suppose South Shields is too far? They have everything. A first quality shop at full price, then loads of whatever in the seconds shop - which is huge. Future fashion proof? My Bedale is 20 years old and certainly was NOT fashionable when I bought it. My stepson lives in Oz and they are considered very cool over there. I think Barbour has earned its place as a British Heritage brand and heritage is fashionable now - speaks to the investment dressing for the recession argument.

I have a barbour wax jacket with wool lining. Its a lovely fitted one that comes half way down my thighs. I love it I live in it. Its warm, comfy, practical and with my lovely dubarry boots that my dh has just treated me to I think it looks lovely

JaneFeestelijkBierdekijn · 20/11/2011 20:15

They are overpriced! nice but overpriced and that's coming from someone who needs a proper jacket

Try and find something nearly new on ebay, that's what I did.

JaneFeestelijkBierdekijn · 20/11/2011 20:17

Sorry, I mean belstaffs are overpriced.

Barbours are probably about right and nicely technical too. But I wouldn't describe my Trialmaster as a fashion item, it's fairly tank like.

Bellavita · 20/11/2011 20:18

Yikes, have just looked at the prices for the Belstaff jackets Shock, I did not realise they were more £££££ than Barbour and I really liked them . No, you haven't changed the thread Vaj Grin

South Shields is a bit far from me.

OP posts:
JaneFeestelijkBierdekijn · 20/11/2011 20:21

I'm envious of the South Shields lot Smile

Nowhere near there myself. But ebay is universal.

fivegomadindorset · 20/11/2011 20:22

I do, it is a bit battered and ripped, honks a bit and has bailer twine and chicken food in pockets.

franke · 20/11/2011 20:25

I've got the Faye Drawstring but in black from here at a bargain price. I really love it. It's waxed and has a quilted lining so a good Autumn jacket. It's neat and easy to wear; for me the International has too many buckles and stuff. Oh, and it has a detachable hood which could be handy.

Vajazzle · 20/11/2011 20:28

I love the gadjohn (had Sunday wine)! Live in the country and have a dog... So not completely fashion orientated!!! Just need to justify the belststaff!
My wardrobe hAve the Bradford.. 20% off .....shall I ???

Bellavita · 20/11/2011 20:37

Vaj, I have just fallen in love with them all and Have just tried to apply the 20% to the Barbour Trials jacket, but it doesn't seem to have taken the discount off Sad

Yes, g'wan, treat yourself.

hiddenhome · 20/11/2011 21:01

I live 20 minutes from South Shields Grin

We've had a couple of the more traditional style jackets from the shop.

higgle · 20/11/2011 21:42

I have three - a 26 year old bedale - still going strong, one I "borrowed" from DH a few years back and he hasn't really noticed yet, and a newish utility jacket which looks lovely for best. I would not be without one.
