Why is White Stuff so universally hated on here?

Donning flameproof suit but I like it. I agree that some of the heavily patterned stuff is a bit OTT and I prefer the winter stuff to the summer range generally but it's not THAT bad is it? The colours are fab and the stores are really nice to shop in. Some of the plain tunics and cardigans are lovely and I've really fallen for a pair of winter boots to wear with chunky tights and a short skirt. (Mind you I have just ordered the Clarks shoes that everyone else hated when I posted about them last week so not sure I should even be frequenting this board!) Surely it's like everything though - head to toe WS would not be good but mixed with other things it can look nice can't it?

Am I imagining this or did White Stuff change their target market at some point, from richer student to the mum brigade? Am sure when I was at uni students with more cash than me wore it, I used to think of it like a pricier Fat Face and they sold £60 jumpers 15 years ago. Jumpers aren't £60 now and no students to be seen.

Tshirts ok and have a great long denim skirt but knitwear well dodgy. Have a jumper (didn't cost £60) that looks great for 5 minutes then the bottom goes all stretched and wiggly and just looks crap

this dress is called christmas spirit

Ghost of christmas past, more like.

Who on earth looked at that monstrosity and though 'christmas'.

It is the colour of old dish rags which have been decommissioned and downgraded as cloths to T-cut the car with.

LordAlconleighsEntrenchingTool · 15/11/2011 12:44

And it is £65 for a 100% polyester /viscose dress.

They must see people coming.

JaneFeestelijkBierdekijn · 15/11/2011 12:51

LOL at party dress. Grin

I have rarely seen anything less fun

they have nicked it off a passing granny and a dull one at that.

I hate white stuff slightly, and only slightly less than I hate Joe Browns

It's take-the-piss clothing. Yes the occasional thing is passable. But it's take the piss.com.

I was saying the other day that for me it lands in the same non intellect bracket as the vacuous charity muggers in town. All smile and no fucking substance. It's a con. And nothing fits right...just read the reviews.

TougherThanTheRest · 15/11/2011 13:34

It fits me quite well and sometimes I need to get a size smaller which always brightens my day :)

I honestly think people on here (and this section in particular) fall into two camps. Those stylish ones who read magazines and give thought to what's 'on trend', as well as enjoy shopping. And the rest of us who actually just want to roll out of bed, throw on some clothes and look half decent and can't bear the thought of shopping, particularly with a toddler in tow.

I am firmly in the latter camp, so tend to buy from about 3 or 4 websites, order online and rarely send stuff back. I don't own many clothes at all so am more than happy with my White Stuff/Fat Face/Boden/Gap uniform.

TougherThanTheRest · 15/11/2011 14:39

Actually I would say I was somewhere in between - I love shopping! But I am not that interested in 'fashion' as much as I am in looking nice and wearing what suits me and my lifestyle - a lot of what's in magazines looks bloody ridiculous and is totally impractical! Places like White Stuff, Fat Face etc tick all the boxes for me but I guess the answer to my original question (why people hate them) is that they sell 'nice' clothes as opposed to 'fashionable' - and people also seem to hate the selling a lifestyle thing which I admit can get a tad annoying although I am usually sucked in by it.

I don't like White Stuff because it's all so unstructured, and makes me and nearly everyone else I know who wears it, look like a sack of potatoes. It's quite dated now, and at least half the women I know love it and wear it, along with their Orla Keily handbags.

LordAlconleighsEntrenchingTool · 15/11/2011 15:48

I think I baulk at clothes which look as if they are specifcally designed to hide mummy tummies.

JaneFeestelijkBierdekijn · 15/11/2011 16:02

I don't read mags and I don't do 'trends' either, but I still don't like White Stuff. It's their attitude and yes, a lot of the clothes which are sort of 'you what?' imo. Just because it's different doesn't make it good...

I also like to throw on clothes but it just isn't those ones.

TougherThanTheRest · 15/11/2011 20:09

I agree that WS clothes are not to everyone's taste (and as I've said a lot of them are not to mine) but I was asking because they seem to provoke such strong opinions on here and I wondered why that was. I really like a lot of their clothes but only mixed with other things - as I said, too much from any one place rarely works.

LeQueen it's taken me nearly 40 years to find my style which is quite similar to yours by the sound of it with slightly warmer colours and clearly a bit more White Stuff :) I haven't got much confidence in my taste but a friend recently asked me to help her choose some new clothes as she thought I was good at mixing and matching from different shops and knowing what works - that was a massive compliment!

lequeen, I now imagine you as Madonna in "desperately seeking Susan" in that outfit Shock

OP, I find WS harmless and inoffensive but it never fits me so don't buy it.

ameliagrey · 15/11/2011 21:18

I buy one or two things from them- all plain. cardis, a couple of tunics, T shirts.

I think what I get bored with is it's very same-y either you want A line skirts, jeans or leggings and tunics.

If you want anything remotely sophisticated then it's not in WS.

it's also over priced- everything seems to be £45 or near enough except the Ts which are £25.
