I wear dresses with flats all the time...two years ago you wouldn't have found a dress in my wardrobe!

Beauregard · 09/11/2011 22:09

Do you know i'm thinking i have probably done this type of thread before but honestly the idea of wearing a dress fills me with dread.

Go and try some on in the shop to get a feel for it. I was very much a trouser girl all my life and only started wearing the occasional skirt and dress for special occasions and then they started slipping into my work wardrobe too. I still don't wear them often, but am very happy with the ones I have.

Go for something relatively casual at first, or you might feel it's too weird to even consider.

WaitingForMe · 09/11/2011 22:15

I just bought [[http://www.timberlandonline.co.uk/on/demandware.store/Sites-TBLGB-Site/default/Search-Show?cgid=earthkeepers_collection_women_Footwear&pid=PS_18636&start=1&source=search&color=214 these] which I've been wearing with dresses such as [[http://www.joebrowns.co.uk/sp+Womens-Dresses-Tunics-Funky-Cat-Knitted-Dress+LD275 this] from Joe Browns. 95% of my wardrobe is dresses and while I generally wear heels. This is my running around uniform for autumn/winter.

I don't know how people who don't wear dresses manage. I've gone too long since I had to match/coordinate a top to a bottom Grin

LillianGish · 09/11/2011 22:16

A dress with boots - easiest outfit in the world. No need to work out what goes with what - effortlessly coordinated. Can a dress look good with flats? If you are tall enough - I could never wear flats, but if you wear flats generally then yes, a dress with flat boots would be perfectly acceptable.

WaitingForMe · 09/11/2011 22:16

Gah! Normally my posting works. I hate that you can't edit posts here!

briedog · 09/11/2011 22:21

I very very rarely wear dresses or skirts, but find I'm just about confortable enough (mentally) if I'm wearing leggings with them (and then ballet shoes or similar). Maybe give that a try to start with?

Piffpaffpoff · 09/11/2011 22:23

I have just bought 3 'casual' dresses, having never had one before other than for weddings/special occasions. I am wearing them with flat boots and am loving it! Can't believe I got to the grand old age of 41 without wearing dresses. I'm normally a jeans and top kind of a person so it's a nice change.

Beauregard · 09/11/2011 22:30

I think because i'm tall i would just look like a man in drag Grin
And flats wouldnt look right for 'going out' and there is no way i could wear a heel.

OP posts:
Beauregard · 09/11/2011 22:31

oh i do the tunic with leggings on a good day

OP posts:
Trills · 09/11/2011 22:35

Depends - why do you have no dresses?

Do you have skirts? Or are you a trousers-only person?

Beauregard · 09/11/2011 22:36

No skirts either
Staple 'safe' uniform is jeans ,jeans and more ill fitting jeans

LDNmummy · 10/11/2011 01:09

I hadn't worn a pair of jeans or trousers in years till recently and I always wear flats. IMO dresses and skirts look lovely with flats, I think heels are really only for a dressy occasion or smart affair.

LDNmummy · 10/11/2011 01:12

And dresses and skirts are so easy to wear!

I just put on a thick pair of black tights underneath and a casual cardi or jacket on top and hey presto!

I actually find it far more daunting to wear jeans or trousers because they never fit just right and I always feel constricted in them.

AndiMac · 10/11/2011 12:21

There's no way you'll like a man in drag wearing a dress. Unless you already look like a man in your jeans. In which case you may as well wear a dress to convince people you aren't a man! Wink

So Pelvicfloornomore, this weekend, are you going to go and try one on?

Beauregard · 10/11/2011 12:40

wah wont be this weekend noooooooooo
This is so far out of my comfort zone ,and today i learn i have gained weight so def wont be this weekendSmile
I wouldnt know what suits me anyway ,are there any fail safe dresses out there ?

OP posts:
Hullygully · 10/11/2011 12:41

where can you get nice plain dresses?

Bramshott · 10/11/2011 12:47

I have recently experimented with something a bit like this - both with knee-high boots, and with opaque tights and flats. I think it looks okay, and I really don't do dresses (to the extent that I got married in trousers!).

Hullygully · 10/11/2011 12:49

I like that Bram, but I am very lumpy and bumpy, I imagine one must be svelte?

PattySimcox · 10/11/2011 12:52

YY Lillian - so easy to throw on dress and boots

Hullygully · 10/11/2011 12:53

come on then dress wearers, help Pelvic, and me.

Tortington · 10/11/2011 12:54

i really don't think you should confine yourself to flats to adhere to a societal ideal that women are midgets and petite

much more admire as a woman - tall women who wear heels. Have to say that ex mumsnetter mamazon was stunning in this regard

cyb · 10/11/2011 12:55

What shape are you?

I have broad shoulders which I feel really helps with dress wearing

And yes a dres can be worn with flats, a mini dress with thick tights and flats or a slim under the kneee pencillish dress

verlainechasedrimbauds · 10/11/2011 12:57

I don't wear dresses very often but I love them in the summer. I never wear heels (can't walk in them) but sandals or pumps with a dress are great. I like longer length dresses because then I don't feel so self-conscious about my fat ankles and I really like the swishiness of a full skirt!

Ephiny · 10/11/2011 12:59

I only wear dresses for wedding and formal occasions where I'd feel out of place in trousers. I always wear them with flats and it's fine, even though I'm short :)

I do feel weird in a dress though. Not so much 'like a man' - it's hard to look very man-like with my height and shape! - but more as though I'm dressed up as a woman, so yes, a kind of 'drag'.

It's probably just a case of getting used to it though, if you get in the habit of wearing them they'll start to feel perfectly normal I'm sure!
