where the tights squeeze your waist?

why wouldn't you want that?
as long as the tights aren't too tight for you, they'll hide all the lumps and bumps under your dress.

If you are tall you will look great in dresses with ballet flats, it is not a man in drag look (they wear stilettos). You will also probably suit skirts, not that I am even slightly jealous (5ft and have to take dresses up, or I look like a little girl trying on grown up clothes). I would start wearing tunics with skinny jeans and boots and go from there, dresses are so much more comfortable than jeans.

Maybe try DP tall range, inexpensive dresses to get you started.

Thanks Nickelbabe. I like the Next and Matalan ones and will try those on.

As it's a summer dress though I probably won't wear it again this year Sad. I don't think boots or tights would go with it.

I wear maxi dresses and always with flats. I wear ballet pumps, riding boots and peg heeled pointed types. My favourite boots are my Agnes B chelsea type ones. These are higher than an ankle boot and a cross between a chelsea and a cowboy sort of thing on the heel. Semi pointed. If you are going to go down the maxi route it helps to keep the boot/shoe neat and not clumpy. No bagginess around the ankle. Easiest thing in the world is to have a selection of black(or whatever colour suits) dresses that is your base. You can layer them up, pop a cardigan over or denim jacket when casual. When you need a bit more layer on the scarfs/ necklaces etc.
I look hideous in trousers/jeans and find them uncomfortable so I have settled on my style and find dressing stress free, that is until I have to restock........not so easy.

Molly - long sleeved cream teeshirt underneath and wear with knee-high boots and cream tights?
Then you could also wear a cream or green cardigan over the top.

Here's some style advicw for tall ladies: here
I would say do it. Bite the bullet- you only live once! Unfortunately I can't wear dresses because of my really disproportionate calves and ankles. I would if I could.

levantine · 10/11/2011 15:25

nippy - how tall are you and where do you find nice maxi dresses?

MollyintheMoon · 10/11/2011 16:14

Thanks Nickelbabe

I have got this really easy to wear, either fling a cardigan over the top or wear a long sleeved top underneath

TheOriginalNutcracker · 10/11/2011 16:25

Good thread. I would love to own some every day dresses and skirts, but I am short and dumpy lol. I am 5'2 and a size 14 and everything looks wrong and normally too long.

Nippysnippy · 13/11/2011 11:10

LEVANTINE-I am 5"3. I wear long black column shape jersey dresses or empire line without any gathering underneath. I have bought Boden ones from a couple of years ago and dyed others black because they are so hard to find. This last summer the Boden ones were really 'poofie' under the empire and have proved a waste of money. I think if you keep the silhouette clean it elongates. Well that's my theory.........
