GHD straighteners - worth the extra cost?

LemonMousse · 09/11/2011 14:21

Teenage DD has expressed an interest in a pair of GHD's for Christmas.

If I were to invest they would be for both DD's and for me - a sort of 'family gift' Wink

Are they really that good? Or am I paying for a 'name'?

IMO no. I had a pair and thought they were good until they broke and I got a pair of Remmingtons. I'd never use anything else now, and dd1 has Remmingtons too and loves them.

porcamiseria · 09/11/2011 14:33

I think they are

Eggrules · 09/11/2011 14:35

I love mine and find them superior to any others that I have used. They get hotter and take 2 mins - I have narrowish ones. If you travel in Europe you don't need an adapter - there is a euro plug inside the UK one.

Haven't tried Remmington ones. Do you know anybody that has some for you to have a try?

Jammygal · 09/11/2011 14:37

I also think they are very good......had wet 2 straight before. Mine have lasted more than three years and still going strong....so worth it imo ;)

I think they're worth every penny! I'm on my second pair now but that's only because my mum won a ghd competition at the salon she goes to and has short hair! I've been using them for 6 years now!

Dalrymps · 09/11/2011 14:40

I don't own Ghd's but my sil does and every time I borrow them I am amazed! I get such good results, they heat up super quick and glide so smoothly through my hair. In comparison, my straighteners are crap! Wish I could afford some Ghd's.

redlac · 09/11/2011 14:43

yes, worth every penny. My first pair lasted me 4 years and now onto my second pair after trying to save money & buying a cheapo set which took 3 times as long to use.

LemonMousse · 09/11/2011 14:44

So the 'good' opinions outweigh the 'bad'.

We have some Tresseme ones at the moment which are OK but we all have wavy hair so it does take a while to straighten with them.

OK ladies - you have me convinced Smile

I'm still on my first set, and they've lasted 8 years up to now and are just as good as they were brand new.

sprinkles77 · 09/11/2011 15:16

worth every penny. Heat up fast, newer models turn off automatically. Mine are 7 years old and still working great.

1gglePiggle · 09/11/2011 15:20

In a word - yes.
Don't waste your money on anything else.

Nat38 · 09/11/2011 15:20

Ive just ordered some Scarlet GHDs for my daughter for her main christmas present!! So am glad Ive read all the good reports on here!! Shes been asking for some for the last 18 months have finally given in!!

Pootles2010 · 09/11/2011 15:21

They're great. Mine are now...(works it out) 9 years old? When they break i'll get another pair definitely. And they cost the same as my monthly food budget Blush

LDNmummy · 09/11/2011 15:57

I find they are good and effective if you are dead set on having poker straight hair at any cost. I say that because they are so hot that they can be very damaging to your hair. The older models didn't have good temp control either so no option to use a lower heat.

Personally I would get Kodo straighteners instead. It is a lesser known Japanese brand which are great for far less money. I had a set years ago but stopped straightening my hair so didn't get a new set. I would buy them over GHD's though.

But then if she really wants GHD's, I suppose it depends on your budget.

Jessicaalbastwin · 09/11/2011 16:31

Has any of you bought from www.ghdhair4u.com will be buying a pair for My neice for xmas.

Hulababy · 09/11/2011 16:44

IMO yes.

I have had various straighteners over the years from very cheap to expensive. My last pair were the same price as GHDs, but weren't GHDs - and they were no where near as good. They had heat conmtrollers and everything but they just didn't do the job very well. I now have GHDs and they are so much better.

I am rubbish at doing hair but even I can make my hair look nice and sleek, with a curl under at the bottom with GHDs and in less than half the time as with non GHDs - so actually in many ways my hair gets less heat on them as I don't have to keep redoing the same way.

I am far happier straightening my DDs hair with GHDs than I was with other models as I know I can do it so much quicker.

hayleysd · 09/11/2011 16:50

Yes, I love mine and they're 5 years old wouldn't replace them with anything else.

cjbk1 · 09/11/2011 21:55

Abso-flippin-lutely anything cheaper is a false economy

Stateofplay · 09/11/2011 22:00

I think so, as my GHD have lasted six years now. Often it is the longevity that you are paying for - they still heat up in 4 seconds, or whatever it is. My straightened hair also lasts a long time, even through rain or gales.

However, I am utterly paranoid that my straighteners will one day cause a house fire (burning the dog in the process) so after every time I've used them I put them on the tiled floor in the bathroom to cool down, while I run out of the house. Does anyone else do that?

louby86 · 09/11/2011 23:15

Just make sure if you do buy them they come from a salon or a reputable website as there have been many fake ones for sale on websites with strange names and eBay. They have an authenticity hologram on the inner part of them next to the plates

deviladvocate · 09/11/2011 23:23

I'm on my second pair but I was an early adopter. When my first pair died i bought the type that they used at my hairdresser, they didn't even last 6 months, I can't recall the brand but the iron bits were red. I think GHD's are fab! I also have a heatproof pouch that i store them in - keeps little fingers away from them and ensures that they don't scorch furniture / carpet, great for packing even while warm into a suitcase when we're going away too.

BustersOfDoom · 09/11/2011 23:28

Yes I agree. I wouldn't buy them for ages cos I used the same straighteners that the used in the Harvey Nicks/Aveda salon I went to when I had more money than sense a few years back. They were good but blimey what a difference.

But GHDs heat up quickly, give a fab result, are brilliant at curling and switch off automatically if you forget to unplug them. Important with my shite memory!

And louby86 is right. Only buy them from a reputable source such as a salon. There are a lot of fakes out there that might damage your hair or at worse give you a nasty electric shock. And once you've got them register them on the website. GHD are very good at repairing/replacing if they go wrong.

MaMattoo · 09/11/2011 23:40

Yes.yes.yes.

formerdiva · 10/11/2011 07:41

I used GHD's for a few years until last month, when I left them in a hotel by accident. I bought the Remington pearl on offer in boots for £40 as I couldn't bear to fork out for more Ghd's and they've been brilliant - far better than the GHD's. They just seem to make my hair look better and not only heat up as quickly as the Ghd's but cool down really quickly as well. You wouldn't regret the Ghd's - they're great straighteners. But IMO the remingtons are even better
