Cufflinks advice needed

My DP wants to buy his Godson some good cufflinks for his 18th. Have you got any suggestions about a suitable brand? I thought first of Tiffany but consider that too female a brand. I don't like Links for some reason. I think I'm after an old school gentleman kinda vibe. Ideas?

We want to get all our kids something from this company (necklace for DD, cufflink for DSs) as it relates back to year they were born, also tempted to get DH a watch from the year we got married

DH is RAF so wears cufflinks at least every other month so the DC buy him a new set each Christmas - he has DS1's fingerprints, little silver Harrier jets, when he was his DBs best man at their wedding in Gib they got him a pair with the crest of Gib on....
ebay is a great place to start looking!

ujjayi · 08/11/2011 19:40

I quite like Tiffany for cufflinks - DH has a beautiful silver pair from there which are very simple and classic. He wears cufflinks most days and buys from a variety of stores. Paul Smith might be a good choice. Although he does quirky, he also aces at classic British so worth checking out the range.

ellangirl · 08/11/2011 19:44

Alfred dunhill?

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 08/11/2011 19:45

Simon Carter do some nice ones too.

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 08/11/2011 19:47

stan first of all I would check if he is ever likely to wear cufflinks before shelling out a lot of money.

I do like Tiffany for cufflinks and have never really looked at that section in Links.

floweryblue · 08/11/2011 19:48

Why do you need a 'brand' Stangirl? Surely your DP is capable of going to his local jewellers, looking at what is available and making a judgement about what he thinks will be appreciated, is in his budget and will last.

nbee84 · 08/11/2011 19:55

My Dh has (and wears) cufflinks that his god father gave to him. They are silver and oval and have his initials engraved on them.

Sorry, no idea who made them (they are 46 years old!) but just to say go for something simple that won't date.

MrsUnassumingTroll · 08/11/2011 20:18

Thomas Pink or TM Lewin or Charles Tyrwhitt?

Although Links is probably better quality.

Stangirl · 08/11/2011 20:23

Thanks everyone.

@floweryblue My DP has left this all rather late and needs them by Friday lunchtime. As he works all day and only had his lunches to do a smash and grab raid on a shop I asked for a brand so he could target a shop that sold something he had checked out on line. My preference would have been for some art deco vintage gold ones from ebay but we haven't the time.

I'd try Links or perhaps Hackett.

floweryblue · 08/11/2011 20:48

Stangirl, if you can PM me (sorry don't know how to do it to you) I have a selection of cufflinks on my website which could be sent to you tomorrow with guaranteed delivery Thursday by 1pm. I can also describe the other cufflinks we have in stock and send pics. None match your description but I might be able to help. Also, there is another lady on here (I can't remember her name but she was on the 'Are charm bracelets naff' thread a few days ago) and she does vintage jewellery IIRC.

Stangirl · 08/11/2011 21:43

@floweryblue I've PM'd you. Thanks very much.

Hopefully you will get an email from DP's address, please reply to Pebbles if there is anything of interest, we are only there 10am to about 4.30pm.

bethelbeth · 08/11/2011 23:14

oh flowery pm me your website I'm dying for a nosey /vintage fix

floweryblue · 08/11/2011 23:36

I don't do vintage bethel, but SHOUTING TO STANGIRL, I think Bethel is the other lady may be able to help you.

bethelbeth · 08/11/2011 23:40

Is it vintage-esque ? So long as you're not in the Glasgow area and pinching my customers I could still love you? Wink

floweryblue · 08/11/2011 23:44

PM is complicated for me(DP treats me and my a/c on computer as under 12), I'm not sure if it's allowed to post a link or web address direct and I always obey rules, hence am not a millionaire. Why don't I just try it: www.pebbles-st-ives.co.uk
if you see something you like, contact us, we've only been there 28 years

fuzzywuzzy · 08/11/2011 23:45

Aspinal do really nice ones & they engrave them for free.

bethelbeth · 09/11/2011 21:21

Oh I got some cracking tiangus jackson jewellery second hand so I can flog it for pennies. It always been a good seller for me. . V nice and simple website. Well done! x

floweryblue · 09/11/2011 21:59

Don't flog your TJ jewellery for pennies bethel, it's top quality silver jewellery, get a good price!

Graciescotland · 09/11/2011 22:04

Azendi do really nice titanium cufflinks. Plain, classic but with a modern twist.

bethelbeth · 09/11/2011 22:08

I get a good price because I pick it up at the scrap price. I rarely buy anything for more than scrap pricing. Means that I can sell everything really cheap (in comparison to high street etc.).

I have the rippled cuff which rrps at £99. I can sell it for £50 as it cost me buttons to pick up. It's luck of the draw though you never know what you'll find.

floweryblue · 09/11/2011 22:39

Fair enough Bethel, do your business the way it works for you. Do you have a website?

bethelbeth · 09/11/2011 23:10

It works. Sort of Wink I'd love to make more money obviously but feel like I'm filling a gap in the market. Website is under construction but I have a facebook www.facebook.com/avaadoreglasgow which is chronically underused. (Who has time!!??)

Come to think of it, I have some really nice silver gents cufflinks. They're second hand and in a 1920's style, although I was going to make them into earrings.

Will dig them out so that you can have a nosey OP

floweryblue · 09/11/2011 23:34

I tried the Facebook thing, total waste of time.

Don't make your cufflinks into earrings, gents want affordable cufflinks and they are few and far between these days.

Love your photos, really great. It is so hard to get the character of a piece of jewellery. My web man wanted to auto-edit my very hard won pics, we ended up with images that were completely unrepresentative of the actual items.

Bloody hard work having a jewellery website that can actually sell. Where does your jewellery come from?
