How do I make a really big bun?

ImCoveredInBeeeees · 30/10/2011 20:13

I have long hair and I like wearing it up. I often wear it in a sock bun, which looks good. But I've been watching old Sex and the City episodes, and I love Carrie's hair at Charlotte's first wedding (to Trey). It was basically a HUGE bun on the back of her head.

I can see easily how I could style this look using the sock bun method, but I need to think what I can use for the sock bit. I've googled to see if I can buy a bigger donut thing but they don't seem to exist. I can't just add more socks because the hole in the middle gets smaller and then I can't get my hair though it in the first place, and it gets too heavy.

So my question is: can anyone think what I can make a big donut out of, that is light weight and crucially very easy to do - I am utterly inept with sewing etc.

ThePathanKhansWitch · 30/10/2011 20:19

Ooh I live that bun.Marking my place for the link.

southeastastra · 30/10/2011 20:20

backcomb it, using a fake bit will look weirdy

izzybizzybuzzybees · 30/10/2011 20:20

What on earth is a sock bun??

Byeckersiambloodyscarylike · 30/10/2011 20:23

here

Except mine is dark brown, you cover it with hair, looks fantastic, i used it a lot in a low side bun when my hair was longer

KatyMac · 30/10/2011 20:27

dd has this which is bigger

ImCoveredInBeeeees · 30/10/2011 20:33

Okay, I'm on my Blackberry now which has an annoying habit of posting multiple times, so apologies if that happens.

Thanks for the links. I have that Boots one and it isn't big enough. I really think I need to make something. I'm talking something about six inches in diameter.

For clarification, southeastastra, I need padding to form the bun around, not extra hair!

In the olden days you would get the hair that collects in your brush and make it into a hair piece that then gives your the padding you want. You could do the same and put it in a pop sock that is the same colour as your hair ( sounds gross but it's only your hair if you think about it and you could wash in the pop sock in a diluted shampoo)

Or you could try something like this

(check out patrick himself!)

I used to do a big fat bun back in the days when I had waist length hair. I put it in a high pony tail, but with the elastic about 10 inches away from my scalp. Then I pushed the elastic bit agains my scalp and pushed in big pins all around.

Also as someone else said, backcombing would really help. And spray with dry shampoo for more volume.

Okay, I have a plan. I'm going to try to fashion a big donut from the leg of a pair of tights stuffed with cotton wool. I'm thinking I can coil it round and round like a danish pastry to make it a big enough diameter. I'll have a go tonight and let you know how it turns out.

Hmmm cotton wool is a bit solid I'd say. Try shredding it so it's got a bit of air in it?Looking forward to a progress report

bishboschone · 01/11/2011 07:05

They sell those doughnut things in primary for £1.. Exactly the same.

FreddieMercurysBolero · 01/11/2011 20:51

Oh watching this, I'd love to do a similar style for my graduation... My face is probably a bit too fat.

trixymalixy · 01/11/2011 21:56

You could buy a few of the cheapy primark ones, cut them up and sew into the shape you want?

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 02/11/2011 09:25

I never got on with the sock bun method. If you have long hair and are willing to back-comb, you should be able to get a very big bun this way.

I have just below shoulder length hair, which is very thick and I can get a very sizeable bun going on with this method.

The girl in the video doesn't create that big a bun, but you easily could doing it this way.

I like this thread, i'm going shopping later for a comb and a headband.

ImCoveredInBeeeees · 02/11/2011 12:23

I haven't had time to make my enormous donut yet but I'll let you all know how it goes when I do. Maybe tomorrow morning.

I can feel pictures coming on...

Been to sainsburys, no combs and all the skinny headbands were sparkly... maybe i'm too old for a headband anyway.

Yes, photos of your huge donut please!

ImCoveredInBeeeees · 03/12/2011 20:47

Okay, I've finally gotten round to sorting this big bun problem out. RL got in the way for a while, and I had no time! But last night I made my big hair donut, and gave it a trial run this morning.

I cut a leg off a pair of tights and stuffed it with cotton wool. Then I coiled it round on itself until it was big enough, like a danish pastry. Then I sewed it into shape.

This worked really well. I just made my bun using this giant donut in the usual way. I put my hair in a pony tail, thread the donut on, than splay my hair out over the donut. Then I pop a hairband over, and pin the loose ends in to cover the hairband.

I've put a photo of the finished hairdo on my profile, and also a picture of my giant donut next to a normal sized one that I bought from Boots.

if you want smaller donut things they sell them in the childrens section of primark, bit better for thin or shorter hair

blueemerald · 04/12/2011 01:22

I love that hairdo but I can't get to your profile!

ImCoveredInBeeeees · 04/12/2011 19:43

Argh! Profile should be visible now.
