AIBU to think I am too old to wear this?

Bethshine82 · 29/10/2011 21:12

Hi
I am due to go away for one night with my DH to his annual company award's ceremony - he has won some award. It is a bit posh and black tie. I have seen two dresses that I really like from Lipsy. They are both long dresses, not the teeny tiny short ones. They do have huge spilts up the sides though!
BUT since having my son two years ago I have lost my way a bit fashion wise and now feel fat and frumpy and OLD. I am 29 and a size 8-10 (was a 6-8 pre baby) am I too old for Lipsy?? Should I be buying from somewhere more "mature??" I am really struggling with this. I'm getting to the point where I'd rather stay home! In jeans and a t-shirt, or preferably pajamas!

A classic dress like the one you describe has nothing to do with age and everything to do with your figure imo.

If it looks good on you then wear it.

Oh and for the record, I wouldn't know a 'Lipsy' dress from an M&S dress unless the label was hanging out the back Grin

purplewerepidj · 29/10/2011 21:16

Link please, so we can be nosy!

No, you're not too old for Lipsy - I'm 29 and don't see why you shouldn't! Make sure you're confident in what you're wearing, the label doesn't matter Grin

PrincessJenga · 29/10/2011 21:19

Link please!

(Although this is clearly a stealth boast - 29 and a size 8? You know we all hate you right?)

squeakyfreakytoy · 29/10/2011 21:19

I am 42 and would wear a lipsy dress if I wanted to! go for it, if it suits you, and you feel happy in it, wear it!

Bethshine82 · 29/10/2011 21:20

Hi, thanks for replying :-)

It is either this one:

www.lipsy.co.uk/store/vip-2/lipsy-v-i-p-diamante-drape-maxi-dress/product-is-VP00067_011

Or this one:

I may just have to go in jeans! xx

The thing is I know on paper a size 8-10 sounds enviable but honestly I am a funny shape! I swear to god what looks nice on other people the same size looks hideous on me! xx

Wow they look gorgeous - esp the black one, super classy

NinkyNonker · 29/10/2011 21:25

I think I prefer the second one to be honest, it looks a little classier? You could always have the split stiched closed a little if you wanted.

NinkyNonker · 29/10/2011 21:26

What about this?

here

Bethshine82 · 29/10/2011 21:28

Thanks - yes the Coast one is lovely too, I was also looking at a chocolatey brown one from Coast.
Maybe I should just get them all??? And then end up wearing none of them ;-)

I love the black one, it's gorgeous.

I'm the right dress size for it but far too short in height Sad

EllaDee · 29/10/2011 21:31

beth - shurrup, I bet you look great! Wink

Don't run yourself down, sounds as if you have a lovely figure and any of these dresses would I think look very age-appropriate on a 29-year-old.

LunarRose · 29/10/2011 21:31

Don't close the slit one jot. I think we all feel fat and frumpy after children. I also think it's common to feel we ought to be somehow more respectable.

I thought I ought to "dress my age" when i first had kids (I was only 24) queue 2 years of dressy frumpy, now I'd rather dress in what I like and frankly I look the better for it. Grin

Wear the very pretty dresses and know you will look stunning

DirtyBat · 29/10/2011 21:31

If you feel condfident in it wear it, if not don't because it will be obvious to everyone that you feel uncomfortable.

I would suggest something like this maybe, as it is still formal but not frumpy, and not something that could be misconstrued as too 'young'. Easily accessorised and very classic looking.

LunarRose · 29/10/2011 21:33

Wear the black lipsy dress (brainwashing in progress)

LunarRose · 29/10/2011 21:34

Phase eight does tend to look a bit on the frumpy older side for a 29 year old

NinkyNonker · 29/10/2011 21:35

Depends if you want classic/classy or trendy/fashionable...at 30 I would wear the Phase 8 for a work type do over any of the others, even my suggestion!

LunarRose · 29/10/2011 21:35

But I'm biased phase eight was one of the brands that exH thought was "
"very appropriate"

Beaverfeaver · 29/10/2011 21:36

The black one is to die for! I would love to having something posh to go to to give me an excuse to wear a dress like that.

Go for it!

funnypeculiar · 29/10/2011 21:38

Ohhh, the black lipsy dress is gorgeous - and looks very flattering, imo. Wear that one.
And yes - size 8, 29, off to a posh night out to get an award - if you're not stealth boasting, you darn well should be Grin

dexter73 · 29/10/2011 21:39

I like the black one but the other one looks a bit bridal.

EllaDee · 29/10/2011 21:39

Phase 8 and Coast are going-to-a-wedding dresses to most of my friends (I'm 27).

FWIW, my gorgeously stylish MIL observed looking in the window of Phase 8 that it looked too old for her. If that's true at 50something (and I don't say it necessarily is!), then it's certainly a 'safe' option for 29 ... whereas Lipsy looks more like the sort of thing you'd feel amazing and excited to wear. And how often do you wear a ballgown?!

catgirl1976 · 29/10/2011 21:39

29? Size 8? Wear it.

NinkyNonker · 29/10/2011 21:40

I just find the combination of diamante on black a bit obvious teamed with the shape, but if we all liked the same stuff the world would be a very dull place!

raffle · 29/10/2011 21:40

The blue coast one is lovely, but need more info before deciding...hair colour, skin tone. Also, hair down or an up do?
