AIBU to think I am too old to wear this?

Hi
I am due to go away for one night with my DH to his annual company award's ceremony - he has won some award. It is a bit posh and black tie. I have seen two dresses that I really like from Lipsy. They are both long dresses, not the teeny tiny short ones. They do have huge spilts up the sides though!
BUT since having my son two years ago I have lost my way a bit fashion wise and now feel fat and frumpy and OLD. I am 29 and a size 8-10 (was a 6-8 pre baby) am I too old for Lipsy?? Should I be buying from somewhere more "mature??" I am really struggling with this. I'm getting to the point where I'd rather stay home! In jeans and a t-shirt, or preferably pajamas!

I can't tell whether or not they're fully lined from the pictures (they should be for the price!) but if they are, you will probably feel a lot more comfortable in them if pregnancy has left you a little lumpy. If you are feeling a bit self conscious in that way, the first dress does all the right things - cinches in at the waist, but skims over everything else. Even I could get away that one if I could find some suitable strapless scaffolding and I'm a 42 year old size 12-14 with serious belly flab.

NinkyNonker · 29/10/2011 21:42

Yes that is tue, I suspect it is the material putting me off the Lipsy ones, as I like the look of weightier fabrics, a nice raw silk or satin or something.

Bethshine82 · 29/10/2011 21:44

Thank you all for your advice and opinions!
Ninkynonker - the black also comes in purple!
dexter 73 - I did wonder if the creamy / light purple one looked bridal.

Perhaps I will have another look on the Coast webside too. I was going to go to Debenhams but because it's quite a large company do (people from all over UK) I just KNEW I'd end up on the same table as someone wearing the exact same dress!

The black one.

Oh please do buy that one. It's lovely if it has a weight to it.

I miss the events I used to go to.

Bethshine82 · 29/10/2011 21:47

I'm thinking hair up (or at least particially up) With high heels as am only 5'6 (although will have to sit down a lot, am used to flat shoes!). Wonder if I could put my slippers on if feet started to ache?!

Hmmm, purple...interesting! It is such a personal thing. I love black dresses, the drama of them etc but that one just doesn't grab me, I think it might be the floatiness too. Have you tried places like French Connection for funkier dresses?

Hello. We're going to move this thread to Style & Beauty now

HowlingWereWolfBitch · 29/10/2011 21:50

The black one is beautiful. Very elegant I think you should defiantly get it.

ShockinHolyTempers · 29/10/2011 21:50

The black one is gorgeous! Wear it!

EllaDee · 29/10/2011 21:50

I think as well as being a very personal thing (which I agree it is), you need to see the dress on. I think the black is lovely, but to me, it'd depend how clingy the material is and how sparkly the diamante.

Personally, I wouldn't go for purple, I'd say that steps over from 'classic' to a bit sexier than is perhaps right for this do? But I'm not sure! Grin

I was in FC the other day and didn't think it was all that great tbh.

EllaDee · 29/10/2011 21:54

Btw, just to add another one ... this I've seen in the shops and it is lovely, heavy fabric that would skim very nicely. It is maybe a bit pricey and a bit staid, though - depends on what you want!

Spoilt for choice now!
I would like one that sort of sucks in at the waist but is more forgiving in the hip region. I may also invest in some special hold everything in pants! Perhaps an entire body version. xx

Beth - now I am rolling my eyes at someone of your size saying that!

I think you'll just need to try them on, but the Karen Millen one looked to me thick enough fabric to take something underneath that's smoothing out lumps and bumps. Magic kecks are brilliant though, I agree.

This has been a lovely thread btw, I've spent a good half-hour browsing lovely frocks I'll never need! Grin

ouryve · 29/10/2011 22:20

I haven't even worn a dress since I got married! I do have some sparkly going out clothes, but they've probably gone mouldy, by now!

TethHearseEnd · 29/10/2011 22:20

I don't like either of the Lipsy ones- they look too 'blingy' and not very classy. Nothing to do with age, though- just personal taste.

I like that Karen Millen one.

How about:

Hold everything in pants = marvellous invention.

Although DH might not agree!

Thanks TethHearseEnd - I will add it to my list of possibles!

There is also this one!

That Mango one is gorgeous - I want it!

Beth - have you come across waist cinchers? They're fabric but give you a flat stomach. Personally I think they're way more comfortable than magic knickers, though you couldn't wear them under something in very thin fabric, and they look a lot sexier (IME men tend to think they are some variety of lingerie as opposed to scaffolding).

Bethshine82 · 29/10/2011 22:30

Thanks EllaDee - my husband would prefer the waist cincher for sure! They do look good, it would probably be a good investment!

No worries. Smile

Similar to the coast one, but nicer IMO
