anyone want to try it with me? Read about it on here, did a bit of googling and am going to try it, unless anyone wants to talk me out of it. Please? Just 'washed' hair in baking soda, 'conditioned' with apple cider vinegar. I smell like a chip shop on day 1!

Anyone want to share experiences of trying this?

Peedieworky, apparently it can take months to work out the right amount/combination of products/frequency of washing etc.
Foofy, pineappling is supposed to be done loosely, otherwise you get not only sore follicles but a dent in your hair where the scrunchie was?you just need to pull your hair through once.
GohWee, plopping is explained upthread.

FoofFrighteners · 27/10/2011 13:16

I always end up with the odd strand really hurting when I do a pineapple, no matter how loose it is! I prefer a sock at the nape of my neck, comfort and style :o

peedieworky · 27/10/2011 13:25

I know...am weak! I thought I was rinsing too much so will try rinsing more and endeavour not to give up so quick next time!

peedieworky · 27/10/2011 13:26

Cheers for the tips btw foof

peedieworky · 28/10/2011 08:21

Alrighty! Am getting back on the horse.. So, hoping I've got this right now! Plan is for CO wash - spend a good while rubbing it in and then leave on for about 5 mins and then spend a good 5 mins rinsing it off? This has already trebled my shower time - DH will start thinking am having an affair if it wasn't for the fact I seem to live in pyjama bottoms and rarely shave my legs Will do it when baby having a nap then plop for rest of the morning. Promise to try to be patient!

FoofFrighteners · 28/10/2011 09:22

good luck peedie! Hope it works well for you :) I wash mine over the bath now as I was spending so long in the shower!

LesserOfTwoWeevils · 28/10/2011 12:51

peedie, you know you need to leave some conditioner in your hair, right?
Rinsing so thoroughly may strip all the natural oils you're trying to maintain.
If you're washing with conditioner, rinse that out normally and then condition again and don't rinse it all out, or rinse and put in a leave-in conditioner.
With plopping as well, more isn't necessarily better. 15 minutes or so may be all you need.

bigfatgypsy · 28/10/2011 19:04

peedie I'm now on day 7 and seem to have got over the greasiness again which is good news.

Yesterday I gave my scalp a REALLY good scrub with OS conditioner and left it on a while. Then I rinsed it really well and put my L'Oreal conditioner on and left that for a while too. I rinsed that but left a bit in and didn't used any gel this time. Results were a lot cleaner and softer and my hair feels nice again. I've not needed to wash it at all today either so hopefully I'm coming through the other side!

I've bought a different Original Source con today and some Naked Rescue conditioner to try as well so will report back. I'll try the satin pillow too to see if that makes a diff.

How are you doing today?

mathanxiety · 29/10/2011 08:41

I've been doing this for years. I noticed a difference in softness and curliness almost immediately when I first started.

You do have to really do that mechanical scrubbing with your fingertips I have found, as Toboldlygo advised.

I scrunch excess water out with a towel, then leave it.

peedieworky · 29/10/2011 10:39

Thanks for all the advice! I am terrified of leaving conditioner in and adding a product, as my hair just isn't as thick/curly as it was before I had DS (is still at the falling out stage - yeuch!). The last 3 times I have washed it (twice CO, once non-sulfate shampoo and then conditioner) it just hasn't felt that clean once it was dry. Where I come from, the colloquial word we use is full (rhymes with dull, not rhymes with cool), not sure if you have an equivalent term in the dictionary! Basically, as I said before it isn't that it feels oily or greasy - just that heavy, dirty feeling like you've been swimming in the sea or done a big workout. However, like bigfatgypsy I may just need to ride it our for a period till my hair adjusts! I did think it looked nicer yesterday after doing the 5 minute rinse (I didn't add conditioner after) & plopping for longer (stops me fiddling if nothing else!!) I'm really careful to ensure that the stuff am using doesn't contain anything ending in -cone, -conol, or -xane or mineral oil and castor oil.

So! Don't think will wash it today as going to fancy dress party and easiest to tie it back. For tomorrow (just so am getting this right. Clearly that University education was wasted on me...), do I need to buy a leave in conditioner or can I just use the original mint stuff I have?

GohWee · 29/10/2011 10:43

So, you are from Westray?

peedieworky · 29/10/2011 10:49

Wow! Very close GohWee but not quite [hgrin]

peedieworky · 29/10/2011 10:54

Duh - sorry Lesser you've already explained that..

GohWee · 29/10/2011 11:04

I don't know why I thought that but there is something about your MN name (and a play on words). I know people from there and visited eons ago when I was a peerie girl (don't know if I got that right). How close?

GohWee · 29/10/2011 11:12

Actually when you said "fool" but sounds like "dull" I remembered my friend there and how she spoke.

I realise that to anyone else not within a, probably 100 mile, radius (although the radius is not really needed is it!) this will be complete goobledegook.

FoofFrighteners · 29/10/2011 11:17

You can use any conditioner as a leave-in - the main ingredient in leave-ins is water ;) I just add a little to the ends of my hair after I've blotted most of the excess water out. I am using Body Shop rainforest hair butter just now, it's lovely!

If I get a bit frizzy between washes, I just smooth a little through the lengths. A good home leave-in is a mix of jojoba oil, water, and aloe vera gel. I can find the recipe if anyone wants to try it.

Incidentally, aloe vera gel is an excellent leave-in for curlies :)

bigfatgypsy · 29/10/2011 11:50

foof that's interesting, I have some aloe vera gel that I use on my face, never thought to use on my hair.

peedie I'm going to a fancy dress party tonight too Grin what you going as? Ours is a 60s theme - i have gold boots!

peedieworky · 30/10/2011 09:36

Gold boots! I have fancy dress envy. Ours was a kids party, so had to walk a fine line between looking ghoulish and not freaking out the kids!

bigfatgypsy · 31/10/2011 09:29

How's it going peedie? And how was the fancy dress party?

I'm afraid I fell off the no-poo wagon in spectacular style Blush. My party was 60s themed so along with my barbarella-style gold boots and dress I decided I needed a beehive so I'm ashamed to say I did the worst possible thing and BACKCOMBED my hair to create the 'look'. Followed by half a can of hairspray Blush.

It did look great but the next day I was wracked with guilt and shame. Even worse I just couldn't get all the stuff out with just conditioner so I had to do a full-on sulphate shampoo to sort it out. I did follow up with my new Naked Rescues co which smells delicious but I couldn't face leaving it wet around my face all morning again so I dried it. it looks surprisingly fine though, very shiny from the new conditioner, just not v curly. And v clean Smile

Not sure I'm going to keep up the natural drying tbh, I just haven't got the patience. So the curls may go, but I'm definitely sticking with the no-cones co and maybe just a low-poo to get it clean. I stuck it out for a week but never really reached the stage where it felt clean enough. Probably didn't give it enough time though.

Let me know how you're getting on.

QBEE · 31/10/2011 21:55

Ok so I have checked out the pages linked, read the bumf and absorbed all the comments here and now I neeeeed to no poo myself BUT I do have a ridiculous amount of build up. Eek!

What shampoo should I use to get rid of this? A build up shampoo?
The build up consists mainly of the conditioner tubes that you get in hair dye (I use it 'neat' on my hair daily as a sort of leave in conditioner) I also use a siliconey shine spray and on occasion gel (cheap stuff)

Also my hair is thick and curly/ half afro and as such I only wash it around every three weeks and brush it the same amount. I tend to dye it about every three to four months.

This all looks awful when I write it down but honestly it never smells and isn't greasy or lank. Blush

Do I need to just use certain conditioners? Does anyone have a list of the types I should be buying/that works for them please?

Thanks [hsmile]

mathanxiety · 01/11/2011 00:12

Here are some suggestions. I use Tresemme myself and put in Moroccan oil last thing before I leave the shower. I used to use diluted gel but since I started on the Moroccan oil I find I don't really need it; using the oil in the shower means my hair doesn't get that 'crisp' look.

peedieworky · 02/11/2011 08:10

Decided today am going to give up bigfatgypsy. Haven't shampoo'ed my hair for about a week now. Results have never been as good as the first day & to be honest, it's kinda pointless having nice hair if it takes all day to get it! Mine was never great on second day & was taking full day to dry so was in ponytail more than before I started! plus, I have a 5 month old DS so wasting spending 20 mins faffing around with conditioner in the shower was tricky.. Going to stick with no 'cone & no sulphate though and plopping!

bigfatgypsy · 02/11/2011 18:39

It sounds like we've reached the same conclusion Grin One of the reasons I tried it to begin with was because I liked the idea of leaving it to dry naturally rather than spending ages drying and straightening it.

The reality is that it took far longer to dry than i thought which just isn't practical and I spent longer 'faffing about' with it trying to get it to look nice than I ever spent before.

Ah well at least we tried it. I'd forgotten that I'd ordered the Curly Girl book which ironically has just arrived so I'll give that a good read and see if it tells me where I was going wrong. I'll let you know!

brighthair · 02/11/2011 19:51

Boots had sold out of pink curl stuff
I got tresemme naturals then flirty gel stuff and naked curl cream

littlepinkfizz · 02/11/2011 20:18

My hair is curly but due to recent birth of ds 9 mths ago it has become quite thin. :( do you think this would work n my hair? I'm desperate to have lovely defined curls !
