anyone want to try it with me? Read about it on here, did a bit of googling and am going to try it, unless anyone wants to talk me out of it. Please? Just 'washed' hair in baking soda, 'conditioned' with apple cider vinegar. I smell like a chip shop on day 1!

Anyone want to share experiences of trying this?

Oh dear Blush I'm confused now too! I'm sure I read you had to use a sulphate shampoo one last time to get rid of all previous build-up. I might have got that wrong though so don't take my word for it. Let me see if I can find where I got that from.

Bear with.

LesserOfTwoWeevils · 23/10/2011 18:18

Well, if that's what you've got, go ahead and use it. That's what you'll need in future, anyway. Let us know how it goes!

peedieworky · 23/10/2011 18:27

Getting conditioner tomorrow and some form of leave in stuff. Was going to get the Boots curl creme but have read mixed reviews so may get Garnier repair and shine instead. If I don't look like Andie MacDowell within a matter of hours, I'm taking the huff!

bigfatgypsy · 23/10/2011 18:30

Ok I did definitely read that, I can't link cos I'm on my phone but if you type in 'curly girl method' on google and go to the first mn link that comes up there's a long discussion on there that I spent hours pouring over read yesterday.

I'm wondering how to adapt it for dd who has thick but fairly straight hair with a tendency to frizz. Not sure if the no-poo method is just for curly girls or for everyone?

FoofFrighteners · 23/10/2011 19:09

I have wavy, frizz-prone hair and I wash with conditioner :)

peedieworky · 24/10/2011 18:34

Okay! So..day 1. Washed my hair with non-sulfate shampoo and followed with the mint conditioner. Rinsed with cold water (brrr!) but then combed it, which I now know I should have done before the rinse. Waited 5 mins or so then applied no-cone curl creme (possibly was a bit stingey with that) and plopped until I rain out of patience for about 15 minutes. Looked great pre-plopping but think that I maybe rinsed the conditioner out too well/used to little product or that the post-rinse combing or post-plopping faffing may have messed it up a bit. Anyways, is still not dry but looks promising. Ringlet curls with lots of shine. Wee bit fluffy, rather than frizzy but I think I need to stop effing fiddling with it tweak my technique next time and plop a bit longer. Will see how it looks when it is finally dry...

LesserOfTwoWeevils · 24/10/2011 18:56

When I put on conditioner and gel, I thought at first I'd used far too much and was going to have to wash it out and start again, but my hair just drank it up.
Do you need to use a comb at all, peedie? Fingers are better, and even then only to work the conditioner through.

peedieworky · 24/10/2011 19:50

Think am just fiddling with it too much full stop! Looks far better now is dry than I expected given that I got impatient and blasted with diffuser. Could easy use more curl cream though I think &/or be less thorough when rinsing conditioner. Was worried would feel heavy & limp but doesn't at all! How's yours today? This day 3 for you now lesser?

Bl**dy phone...

LesserOfTwoWeevils · 24/10/2011 21:42

It's great so far, slept with it in a pineapple again so I even have perky curls in the mornings. I'll wash it tomorrow so I'm crossing my fingers that it will come out looking as good as it did the first time.

peedieworky · 24/10/2011 21:48

My hair's not really long enough to pineapple so will likely just tie it back and then start with the CO wash on Wednesday. Do you leave the conditioner on for a few minutes after you've scrubbed it into your scalp? Am finding myself getting very very a wee bit obsessed with all this...

LesserOfTwoWeevils · 24/10/2011 21:55

I used a no-sulphate shampoo first, then put in the conditioner, went off and did the washing up and then came back and rinsed it out, but not too thoroughly.

GohWee · 25/10/2011 03:11

I'm really interested in this and have been googling now but still not au fait with some of the terminology. What is CG and what is low poo?

I might join you!

LesserOfTwoWeevils · 25/10/2011 03:20

CG is the Curly Girls method, and low-poo means you use shampoo without sulphates (harsh detergents which strip your hair of its natural oils), you only shampoo occasionally or else you wash your hair using conditioner instead.
The idea is that if you don't use sulphates, you also don't need to use silicone products to treat the dryness and frizz that sulphates cause.

GohWee · 25/10/2011 04:07

Thanks. I don't have curly hair but have very fine, greasy, hair and have to wash every day. How do you find shampoo without sulphates in it?

I never condition my hair as it is so fine and soft so I don't know if I'm going to like this - but am willing to try Smile

TheHumancatapult · 25/10/2011 04:38

I was told by lady in the Afro carribean hairdressers not to wash dd hair more than

TheHumancatapult · 25/10/2011 04:41

Oops pressed to soon

Once a week at ghe most with shampoo as it strips the hair out .Dd not mixed race but has very thick curly hair .

We both tend to use shampoo designed for Afro hair but this only works if your hair is really thick as otherwise it will go limp with weight of the conditioner ( mines straight ish but very long and very thick )

RainboweBrite · 25/10/2011 12:03

I've joined by accident! My DH pointed out yesterday that we have 2 bottles of conditioner and it's been like that for at least a month!!! I was convinced 1 was shampoo and the other was conditioner! I usually wash my hair with conditioner every other day and just once or twice a week with shampoo and conditioner, but as it turns out, I've been 'poo-free for at least a month!

LesserOfTwoWeevils · 25/10/2011 12:15

Have you noticed a difference, Rainbow?

peedieworky · 26/10/2011 15:42

Anyone else still trying this? Did my first conditioner only wash today and plopped for double the time and is looking hopeful so far providing I resist the urge to start fiddling with it. Have to say I was amazed on day 2 how much better it looked after being slept on compared to normal. Too short to pineapple so just left it and it looked lovely - bouncey and wavey with very little frizz. Managed to tie it back in a ponytail without looking like an extra from Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love" video having to straighten it to death first. Here's hoping...

bigfatgypsy · 26/10/2011 19:13

Hi peedie I'm now on day 5 of this but I'm starting to feel a bit Confused tbh.

Day 1 was great, day 2 wasn't too bad but as I'd slept on it it was a bit crumpled and frizzy. I've done a Co wash every day since then but its now very greasy Sad.

I know I shouldn't probably be wetting it every day but I find that no matter how good it looks one day, as soon as I sleep on it it becomes messy so I have to try and calm it down and the only way to do that is to wet and co wash it.

I'm also really struggling to not mess with it. Yesterday I think I used too much gel so it looked really wet and scrunchy all morning at work. I couldn't leave it and ended up crunching it a lot with my fingers to get rid of the wetness which started off the frizz again. I used much less gel today but it just wasn't happening by lunchtime and I had to tie it up as it was really annoying me.

I also struggle with leaving it to dry by itself. I work 4 days a week so if I co wash in the morning it's wet when I go out and takes hours and hours to dry - practically all day - which isn't great at work. If I wash it at night it's a mess by morning.

I'm going to persevere with the co washing as my hair does feel in better condition but the curls need tweaking. I did try to diffuse dry yesterday but am conscious of it causing frizz.

peedieworky · 27/10/2011 09:41

Am only on day 4 & struggling too! Looked promising after first CO wash yesterday but when it finally dried it felt really heavy and not that clean! Wouldn't describe it as greasy, more similar to how it feels after a marathon work-out or you've been swimming in the sea. Couldn't leave it this morning & couldn't face walking around all day with grotty looking hair. So...I used the sulphate free shampoo as well as my conditioner (skipped the cold water rinse -.too miserable a morning), plopped & diffuser dried. Bit frizzier than day one and not as shiny but at least I look like I've washed

FoofFrighteners · 27/10/2011 10:06

It's important to rinse - do it for AT LEAST 5 minutes. Time it, or sing the 12 days of Christmas as you rinse Wink

My hair is fine and wavy and I do a giant rag curl at the nape of my neck using a sock to sleep in. Helps boost my waves and keeps it fairly neat. (Pineappling gives me sore hair follicles).

Use an old cotton t shirt to towel-dry with (if you're not plopping). Towels muss hair up and can contribute to frizz.

Get a silk or satin pillowcase - or use a slip or silky dressing gown wrapped around your pillow. This made a MASSIVE difference to my hair in the mornings! MUCH less wild!

Ensure you're using a silicone-free conditioner for your wash conditioner - anything listed as an ingredient ending in 'cone' is silicone! And leave it on for a minimum of 10 minutes. Dilute your conditioner as it's then easier to spread, and then easier to wash out. Add a small amount of SLS-free shampoo if you feel you need a little more cleaning power.

GohWee · 27/10/2011 10:09

What's plopping?
