What's a good weight for 5'4"?

Olivetti · 19/10/2011 13:38

I'm not going to say what I am, because I don't want people being kind Grin I genuinely want S&Bers views on what is a nice weight for my height. My frame is small/medium and I have natural (i.e. before fat!) boobs and hips. Thanks!

Olivetti - it's really simple - you're happy with what you like look so.....

DO NOTHING

If everyone relied on their own feelings about who they were then there would be no disordered eating.

Rollergirl1 · 20/10/2011 21:28

I am 5'3. Was just under 8stone until had kids. Then I settled around the 9stone mark. Although at the moment I am also about 9stone 10 and I really don't know why. I have always swam at least a few times a week. About 2 years ago I took up running as well and I looked a lot trimmer and people commented a lot that I looked like i'd lost weight (although I actually hadn't). We went on holiday back in August and I had an early morning swim every morning. I could see even while we were out there that I was starting to look more toned. But when I got back I weighed more then I ever have when not pregnant. Since being back I haven't done as much exercise and have been knocking back the wine a bit. I still weigh the same but also look decidedly wobbly now.

So I have decided to make a concious effort to get back down to 9stone again. I am currently on day 4 of Attack on the Dukan diet and have lost 3lbs.

rattie77 · 20/10/2011 22:52

Its difficult really to say, but I have ranged from 11.8 to 8st and I am 5ft 4". I went down to 8st last Christmas and my family constantly told me how ill I looked, hubby said I aged so much in my face. I am now up to 9st 6 and feel fat - can't fit into any of my clothes from last year, have a wobbly tum and fat thighs etc, though I look much healthier facially. I supposr between 8.12 and 9st would be ideal.

TerriMay · 22/05/2017 22:32

I'm genially worried about my weight at the moment. I'm 13 and I'm 5'4 but I have only just reached 7 stone. But it looks like I have more fat than I actually have and I'm not sure what to think or if anyone else has the same thing ?

OCSockOrphanage · 23/05/2017 11:19

TerriMay, if you are 13, 5'4" and under 7 stone, please don't worry about anything except your family, friends, fun, and education. Stay fit, eat healthy food (as much as it takes to fill you, then stop). You are still building muscle and bone mass, and growing. The discussion in this thread relates to adult women, some of whom may be over 60 like me.

AFierceBadRabbit · 23/05/2017 14:20

I'm 43 and same height and just reached 8 stone after a few yrs of being 7 stone 8.
Stress, small eater, just me i suppose and always has been.

My face is fine though, thanks.

AFierceBadRabbit · 23/05/2017 14:23

My family, when they're rude enough to comment say I am skinny but my GP thinks I'm just fine.

I was around 9 stone once, a few yrs ago, not sure why it went up though. I looked 'different' and didn't feel like 'me'.

I think it's all so individual but if we're going to stick with nhs guidelines then anythng from 7'10 to 9 something is great.

MrsJoyOdell · 23/05/2017 14:36

I'm 5' 5 and anything under 10.5 st doesn't suit me. I have massive boobs though, they're at least a stone in themselves!

PickAChew · 23/05/2017 14:47

My sweet spot seems to be 10st 2. I've been steady here before but I lost 20lb to get back here, last year and have stayed stable without even trying for 6 months, now. My waist measurement is only just in the healthy range, when I'm not bloated from eating something that hasn't agreed with me, but I'e never had a flat tummy and my abs have been completely shot since having the kids.

In my 20s, when I was 5'5, 9 stone was great. In my late 30s, after 2 kids, it wasn't such a good size for me - and my waist was no smaller than it is now!

PickAChew · 23/05/2017 14:48

I also have much bigger boobs than in my 20s!

RockCrushesLizard · 23/05/2017 14:58

I'm only 5'2, so a bit shorter than you, and also one year post baby.
I'm currently 9 st 4, which for me looks healthy, if not slim. I have big boobs so I'm never going to achieve willowy.

But what I will say is I've been failing to lose weight for about six weeks, having previously lost a couple of stone, but have realised the exercise I've started (C25K combined with core work) has led to 2 inches off my waist (32-30), and 1 off my hips in the same time period.

So basically the scales are not the be all and end all!

reallyanotherone · 23/05/2017 15:04

I'm 5,4.

Pre babies, 9.5 stone was easy to maintain. To get under that i had to seriously restrict my eating. I was 9st easting 1200 cals a day, and 8.4 on 800. That's with exercise, i was a reasonable level dancer.

So even then 9st would have been unachievable for me unless i was permanently dieting.

Post babies i'm now 11 st hand weight loss is all but impossible. I still don't look "fat" though, same proportions just bigger.

Dulcimena · 23/05/2017 15:14

5'4 and a half here. Personally, I'm happiest between 9 and 9.5. Under 8.5 I look too skinny. Currently just under 10 and it's ok but tbh I still feel a bit solid.

Although weight in itself doesn't mean a thing really. I've recently started running and although the scales haven't shifted at all, I'm definitely slimmer.

toffeeboffin · 23/05/2017 15:21

I'm 5'4, 35 years old.

9 stone 7 is a good weight for me.

I'm medium build.

Look OK at 10.7, look a bit heavy more than that.

silkpyjamasallday · 23/05/2017 15:22

I'm 5'5" and look and feel best between 7 to 8 stone, currently 8stone 9lbs. My problem is my excess weight goes to my face, which is already fairly plump in relation to the rest of me, when I am lighter my face actually has some shape, you can see my cheekbones and jawline rather than the amorphous blob it currently is. If my body got fatter I wouldn't care but my face is always on show and you can't get Bridget jones pants for your face, or exercise it to increase tone. Hopefully it will mean I look younger in my 40s and 50s onwards but as someone in their early twenties I don't like having the face of a chubby toddler.

JuniorMint · 23/05/2017 15:27

I'm 5'5" and am currently 8 stone 12lbs, I feel my best around 8 stone 5lbs. My heaviest weight after a baby and over a year of breastfeeding (aka eating everything going) was 12 stone 4lbs. I don't like to go above 9 stone now.

Oblomov17 · 23/05/2017 15:28

I'm smaller than that and used to be 9 stone. But looked gaunt and ill at 8.5 stone, so put on a few lbs.

mumsgirl1 · 23/05/2017 15:36
Micah · 23/05/2017 15:38

Those people who "don't like to go above" whatever weight...

Do you find it easy to maintain? Or say at 8.5 do you really need to watch what you eat?

I'm 5,4 and happy at 10st. That's where i can eat pretty much what i want. I don't think being able to not think about food all the time is worth it.

I'm not sure i'd look much better at 9st, and i'd have a worse relationship with food and exercise.

Bombardier25966 · 23/05/2017 15:39

A timely reminder of how dangerous these threads can be, for women and girls.

The only answer needed to the original question is "whatever works best for you".

Willdoublecheck · 23/05/2017 15:54

I'm 5ft 4 and natural weight seems to be 8st 4lbs.

My waist is 28" though, so I dont look tiny.

Do you think that seems a big size waist for my weight? I have been a bit less and waist has gone down, but it takes some effort. I can never buy jeans to fit as they are always baggy aroung my legs but i can do up the waist. Humph.

Judydreamsofhorses · 23/05/2017 16:19

This thread is so interesting. I just read it out of nosiness, as I'm 5ft 6 - I think the "healthy BMI range" for me is something like eight and a half to eleven and a half stone. I fluctuate between ten and ten and a half, usually around the 10/3 mark, but upper end after a holiday - earlier this year I was really ill and dropped under ten stone, and I actually looked awful in the face, which seems nuts given that I could be about two stone lighter.

Marmalade85 · 23/05/2017 17:03
WhereIsTheLikeButton · 23/05/2017 17:05

I'm the same height and I weigh 7stone 2lbs

Newname12 · 23/05/2017 17:06

Joins hully.

There was a similar thread recently, where the consensus was "anything over 9st and I'd feel flabby". That made me want to kill myself too. Certainly didn't make me feel good about my perfectly healthy weight.

"Normal" range as pp have said is somewhere between 7.5 and 10.5st.

So op, i'd say as long as you are within that range and your weight is stable without having to constantly worry about what you're eating or how much exercise you're doing, i'd say you're probably about right.

If the correct weight were "under 9st", then that is what the nhs and average weight charts would say. But for some 10st will be healthier than 8.5st.

For some people, me included, "under 9st" is eating disorder territory (yes i have been there), so i don't think statements like that are helpful. If you mean personally, then say so.
