Mineral makeup with acne?

minipie · 27/09/2011 11:21

Hi all. I've seen lots of glowing reviews on here of Bare Minerals and similar mineral foundations.

However, I've got acne - had it since 13 Sad - and I always have red spots and ex-spots that need to be covered. At the moment I use a MAC liquid concealer, and lots of it. The liquid lets me apply very specifically to the spot and blend with fingers and apply more layers. I can't see how a powder concealer would work? Can it be applied very precisely and can you build up the layers?

Anyone use mineral makeup with acne? How do you cover the spots?

TIA

You could buy some BE from QVC, they have a 30 day return policy so if you didn't like it you'd get your money back. I have adult acne and have been using it for years. It doesn't aggravate the sores at all, if anything it soothes them. They do a wonderful concealer brush that you can be very precise with and the foundations give excellent coverage. I use bisque alongside the foundation to cover any nasties. It stays put all day too.

I've had acne for years... it's fine at the moment, just a few blackheads... I think the mineral make up has helped my skin! I started with Lily Lolo, then BE and now I use www.puremagicminerals.co.uk/ or they sell on ebay too... MUCH cheaper then BE and really good... If I've got any spots or red marks I use a small eyeshadow brush and dip it in the foundation... I do use the bisque concealer if they are really bad. I use this round my eyes too, again with the small brush then I buff over it all again with the foundation brush. Voila! Perfect skin!! Whilst we're on skin... have you tried Le Roche Posay? Amazing... I use the Toleraine but they do an acne range too. I like Vichy too. Roaccutane was amazing for me but no good if you want to try for a baby/are pregnant/breastfeeding... It will calm down eventually... I am, er, nearly 40 and would (almost) go out without make up now Grin

Hokay. I am thinking I could try the mineral foundation but with my usual liquid concealer on anything that the mineral foundation won't cover?

Would this work?

I'm also making new resolutions to stop the picking and squeezing...

What liquid concealer do you use? I do tend to find that liquid concealer exacerbates my spots and makes them last longer. It often has oils in it, plus applying it with your finger spreads it all around and warms the oils up I think - so I just tend to use foundation now, either Lily Lolo mineral stuff or a liquid foundation applied with a stipple brush that I wash each day in hot soapy water. Any spots that still show I just try to ignore, and they do clear up faster I think without being covered in concealer cream.

I think you could try with your concealer but you probably won't need it and it might go all cakey...
I love the picking and squeezing... it's the only good thing about having spots as far as I'm concerned! I have all the right tools... an x12 magnifying mirror,a pair of very sharp Tweezerman tweezers, a Tweezerman blackhead remover and very clean hands/tissues/cleansing cloth for a good rub. Then I cleanse and moisturise properly.
I am not obsessed Grin

I had acne for years and it has improved so much since I started using lily lolo mineral makeup.

emsy I use MAC Select Moisturecover. It is probably not very good for the acne as yes it contains oils and the wand probably just spreads the germs too. But I really doubt that I could get away with just foundation - spots (or marks from picking spots Blush) are bright red and show easily through any foundation I've tried. I couldn't really face going to the office like that. But maybe the mineral stuff is different...?

youjust I think you could be right about it going cakey.

Annem1 hmm, another vote for the Lily Lolo helping with clearing it up.

OK I'm going to get some I think. Any advice on colours? I'm usually the palest or second palest in everything.

minipie just give it a go. What have you got to lose (apart from about £10 for a brush and a tester pot if you buy from //www.lilylolo.co.uk).

This is from one of the FAQs on the lily lolo site re. using mineral make up on acne prone skin: "Mineral makeup is ideal for sensitive and acne-prone skin, as it doesn?t contain harsh chemicals and includes key ingredient zinc oxide, which has healing and antibacterial properties. Minerals are particularly good for acne-prone skin."

I think you'll be amazed how much you can cover with it. I put on a bit more than I meant to this morning and I look totally airbrushed. You could definitely cover even the reddest spots. There's also a green powder that you can use if you've got rosacea or if redness is the main problem.

I think you will see a big improvement if you switch to mineral make up - sounds as though you might be blocking your pores and exacerbating your spots with the oily concealer, but I reckon you will get enough coverage from just the mineral foundation if you layer it and use the concealer brush to apply the foundation more strongly on the spots.

I use Lily Lolo, the pale colours are very pale indeed - buy a few tester pots and choose a shade that is slightly darker than you think you need, as I think it looks fairer on the skin than in the pot. If you buy the finishing powder, buy the flawless silk not the matte as it has a more luminous and flattering finish IMO. The Lily Lolo kabuki brush is pretty good I think.

I'm always recommending lily lolo over bare essentials- especially for trouble skin.

minipie re. colours, I'd recommend getting a tester of Blondie and a tester of China Doll. Porcelain is very pale (think goth). Do check out the youtube videos on application technique.

Put on a bit of moisturiser (I recommend a zinc based mineral sunscreen and nothing else if you've got acne). Leave it to soak in for a minute. Then put a bit of the mineral foundation in the lid (you might need to borrow a lid from a bigger pot if you've only got the tester pots. The tester pots are rubbish for this).

Swirl the kabuki brush in, then buff it all over your face in swirling movements. The more you buff it in the better the coverage and the more natural the finish. If you just pat it on without buffing you get a powdery cakey finish. If you keep on buffing, the minerals sort of melt onto your skin and create a really nice natural finish.

Another thumbs up for the acne.org regimen. I had awful acne as a teen, was on roaccutane, which made me feel awful but did not fix the problem, tried all sorts of other stuff.

The acne.org regimen cleared me up completely. I went off it to try oil cleansing and was covered in angry red bumps within two weeks. Once back on the regimen my skin improved dramatically once again.

Can I ask?

For those who have tried the acne regimen, which products did you use? Just a lot are US products.

Furthermore, I am tempted to try Lilylolo and BE, but I have recently tried prestige mineral makeup, after looking at some good reviews. However, after two hours I was an oil slick.

I usually use Revlon colour stay but would really like to switch to Mineral makeup for ease.

If I use buff in Revlon, what colour do you think would be ok for Lilylolo or BE?

To answer your question, I started using the Jan Marini after my second of three N-Lite treatments (my acne was hormonal, and for the first time last year cystic and extremely 'angry' looking). I've kept using the JM products since finishing the N-Lite treatments in June - so, three months now - and I have hardly any new spots. I'm hoping that the TRansformation Serum will help with leftover hyperpigmentation/scarring...

And the Cover FX really is good. Don't know if it's mineral makeup or not, but it was devised specifically for people with acne, rosacea, port wine marks, etc. and is skin friendly! Also comes in a huge range of tones.

Re. the Cover FX - my godfather actually asked me last year, "Do you never wear makeup?" (in a slightly admiring way). I was wearing a layer of foundation at the time :)

Alfie, buff (I'm assuming you are referring to shade 150) in Revlon should be fair or fairly light in BE, roughly.

Ooh not sure dude (trots off to have a look)

alfiemama · 28/09/2011 14:18

Yes dude, it's 150, the one for oily combination skin. I find it's very good but still goes a little oily at the end of the day and not sure I'm doing my skin any favours.
Thanks I will have a look at the BE, I was thinking fair myself.

Also sorry, being the cheap skate that I am Grin. I looked on ebay Blush. Is the id stuff the same, or just a copy of BE?

Sorry I haven't read the whole thread, but just wanted to say a friend of mine had what she thought was acne, and it turned out to be rosacea. Hers came on in her thirties after having children. Just thought it may be of interest, she is now being treated by her doctor.

OK so I will try:

Lily Lolo in Blondie/China Doll
Kabuki brush
Concealer maybe? or concealer brush to use with the mineral foundation

will take a look at the Cover FX stuff - though if it's enough to cover port wine stains it sounds a bit heavy??

maybe try the Regimen

and... I will not pick
