Why do middle aged women dye their hair that flat brown colour, the shade of cheap chocolate?

It's horrid. Stop it.

OP posts:
cornsillx · 22/09/2011 11:59

moondog is one of us over 40's though isn't she? I think she was just having a laugh - everyone is so touchy about this!

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 22/09/2011 11:59

Oh - got it now. Vodka must have been an ad.

cornsillx · 22/09/2011 12:00

I think the vodka must be steamed directly to your PC for some reason maisie

MissBeehiving · 22/09/2011 12:03

Grin Corny and Maisie

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 22/09/2011 12:04

After reading some of the comments on here vodka did seem very appropriate Grin

Do you work for the Daily Mail OP?

Come on, let's see a picture of you fabulous Barnet.

ExitPursuedByaBear · 22/09/2011 12:23

This is why I avoid Style & Beauty (in more ways than one)

TheWisdomOfSolomum · 22/09/2011 12:42

Oh I had mine done yesterday, I only went in to the salon to enquire about making an appointment. Next thing I knew, I was in the chair.

I opened my mouth to say "blonde please" but "red" came out instead. Think Ariel from The Little Mermaid. Actually Ariel is slightly brighter than mine. So she will be accompanying me next time.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT.

BranchingOut · 22/09/2011 12:44

Another bitchy Style and Beauty thread poking fun at a random group of women.

orangina · 22/09/2011 12:51

I think everyone is taking it a little bit personally.......! I dye my hair at home because I can't blardy afford doing it at the salon (the preferable option, OBVIOUSLY....). I do worry about it looking flat and too dark though. I am totally inconsstent about the dye I buy (duh) and some are definitely better than others...

(rams large hat on possibly-slightly-too-dark-and-flat hair)

So, any pointers as to which "multi tonal" dyes might actually WORK, very welcome.....

Mabelface · 22/09/2011 12:54

I dye my hair using Swartzkoff bitter chocolate. I am 41, don't actually have grey hair yet, have shoulder length curly hair which is glossy and gorgeous and distinctly unpubelike.

ToothbrushThief · 22/09/2011 12:54

I choose semi permanent because I'm frightened of permenents. If I find a colour in semi and then use same in permanent what will be the affect on crown ? will I have obvious crown of different coulour?

ToothbrushThief · 22/09/2011 12:55
Maisiethemorningsidecat · 22/09/2011 13:20

Don't feel bad! It's probably written by some young blonde with a slightly more orange shade of skin that is strictly necessary Wink

Bamaluz · 22/09/2011 13:33

Go on then moonie, what colour is your hair?
Any chance of a photo?

Thought not.

ToothbrushThief · 22/09/2011 13:41

Grin Maisie

AWimbaWay · 22/09/2011 13:49

I'm 36 and have a lot of grey hair, I dye it because I don't want to look like my mother just yet, I dye it at home because I can't afford to get it done at the hairdressers. I only ever use semi permanent colours though so avoid the regrowth showing. I don't think it looks flat and like cheap chocolate .

LilBB · 22/09/2011 13:58

Better than those who (of any age) dye their hair black when it's not their natural colour. It is the hardest hair colour to pull off especially if your skin is orange.

Ifancyashandy · 22/09/2011 14:07

I Would happily dye my hair at home but, having tried loads of different brands and shades of brown, I can honestly say I've never got a good result. They either fade too quickly or I get the 'flat' effect. I sectioned my hair, used a colouring comb but it always looked shit and one dimensional.

Any tips as I now pay £100 every 6 weeks for cut & colour and would happily not!

piprabbit · 22/09/2011 14:12

If I'm going to have odd hairs growing at random angles out of my hairline then the least they can do is match my naturally brown hair instead of glistening palely in the light.

polyhymnia · 22/09/2011 14:13

I'm well over 40. Have great hair colour - lucky enough to be able to afford to go to a good salon. Love S and B but a bit taken aback by just a few of the comments on this thread and by the ignorance of anyone who believes - if serious - that older women's hair becomes pube-like !!!

TrillianAstra · 22/09/2011 14:16

I opened my mouth to say "blonde please" but "red" came out instead.

That's a dangerous mouth you've got there. Does it often say "steak and chips" when you mean to say "salad"?

MirandaWest · 22/09/2011 14:24

Am 36. And dye my hair at home as it is cheaper than a hairdresser and I am happy with how it looks :) And would love to know why the mutant grey hairs that appear resemble pubes Hmm

FootballFriendSays · 22/09/2011 14:26

I dye my hair at home usually, as no time for salons. It comes out in a shade of expensive chocolate, organic and fairly traded.

Moondog - I'd hide away for a while.

chipstick10 · 22/09/2011 14:37

I think moondog was having a laugh, i dont think it was meant to be taken very seriously. Blush Wink Confused
