This is why Boden is so expensive...

or rather how Johnnie earned himself a cool £15 million last year- according to the financial pages in today's Times.

He owns 60% of the shares and the reckoning is that equated to £15 million in dividends for him.

Profits jumped enormously- and so did prices, yes?

Now you know.

Tethers I heard of that comment and decided he was an idiot. By having had sex to procreate I must become non sexual?

What a load of wahooney.

I quite like River Island pieces if I do buy new, but think the quality is very hit and miss.

mummy2munchkin · 17/09/2011 20:33

tethersend, think this is the article - women.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/women/fashion/article7021934.ece

Well Viva I'm sorry i've made you feel a bit sad for me but probably not as sad as I was made to feel just now for saying a small innocent phrase which means absolutely nothing more to me than trying to find some nice clothes that fit the stage of life I see myself at now.

The boots and the long stripy jumpers are what I bought from boden to wear with leggings because I thought it would look quite classy for my age but beyond that for daytime outfits I'm struggling. I've always been more of a night owl. I might start my own thread but then again after this I doubt it.

No more off topic for me - a million apologies.

tethersend · 17/09/2011 20:38

No, no, start a thread, mummy!

Thanks for the article:

"?They lose it, mothers, don?t they?? says Johnnie quietly. ?And that is why we try and speak to them quite directly. Because they just completely lose it.?"

What a tosser.

Honeydragon · 17/09/2011 20:39

mummy2munchkin

do stick around and lurk a bit, we are nice as a forum. But as other have said, yummy mummy is not a popular term, but we did know what you mean Smile

And do start that thread, you'll get links to loads of great places to shop if you give people an idea what you're after.

VivaLeBeaver · 17/09/2011 20:40

If this thread has made you sad you need to grow a thicker skin to be honest. I didn't have a go. I answered your question and gave you plenty of ideas of where you could try. No don,t worry, that's fine, no problem, absolute pleasure. Good that you're so appreciative.

SharonGless · 17/09/2011 20:40

M2m don't take it to heart. Just think of it as your initiation to s&b. Loads of good advice on here.Have a look through few older threads for ideas or start your own thread

That phrase is just a bit vomit inducing and media speak. Wink

TheWisdomOfSolomum · 17/09/2011 20:40

I sometimes buy from Miss Selfridge, usually day/work dresses. But I'm definitely probably too old to be a Miss.

I also like Zara, Mango, H&M, Top Shop and Warehouse. I've never looked at Boden, always think it would be too expensive for me.

ameliagrey · 17/09/2011 20:40

I do wear Boden, and think it's a bit "affected" to slag off any entire range .

Same applies to White Stuff- no way do I do the White Stuff A line skirt and cardi look, but I picked up some lovely skinny trousers there last week, like jeans but stretchy cotton, and a few T shirts or cardis.

There is usually something decent in most ranges if you pick and choose.
I am 50s, but don't look or dress like the typical woman of my age. I buy the odd plain top or cardi from Boden, and sometimes a plain short skirt etc etc.

I don't have anything patterned.

Mummy2munchkin Its ok, its not just you. I define myself as a mummy first and foremost. Though I didn't use to, and probably there will come a time where I don't in the future. It the part of my life that makes me happiest, so it's how I define myself primarily at the moment. Its no biggie. People are free to think of themselves in the terms that suit them best.

Anyway, I second that you might be a bit too young for Boden Grin

ElectricSoftParade · 17/09/2011 20:42

What does Johnnie look like? Is he a 40/50 something gent? Has the twat lost it too?

Have rapidly gone off all my charity shop purchases.

ameliagrey · 17/09/2011 20:44

Johnnie is 50 with 3 daughters and a Mrs Boden. He has a degree in PPE from Oxford, so he is no fool. After years in banking etc etc he decided to launch his clothing range in 1992- it was mainly country clothing- I still have nightmares about the Poachers Jacket I bought all that time back.

I don't begrudge him doing well- I do begrudge the prices .

ElectricSoftParade · 17/09/2011 20:46

Thanks Amelia, off to Google and find out more about his chap...

TheWisdomOfSolomum · 17/09/2011 20:48

Mummy2munchkin do stay and start that thread, I for one would like some pointers on the same things as you, but I'm too lazy to start my own thread Grin

I've heard tethersend, amongst others is a legend at finding key pieces. Also Tattydivine, for hair care and styling, getorf for make-up.

What's not to love?

tethersend · 17/09/2011 20:49

Now those are funky slippers, Johnny.

tethersend · 17/09/2011 20:50

Yes, it's true TheWisdom. I am indeed a legend in my own mind.

PippiLongBottom · 17/09/2011 20:50

I'm 36 and just spent a small fortune (for me) in Topshop. I am a student so have no wish to look sophisticated. I wear shorts most days. Boden is really not for me.

pettyprudence · 17/09/2011 20:58

mummy2munchkin please start a thread! I am also 29 and struggling with what to wear. Before I started mat leave and became a SAHM i was in smart but quite trendy work clothes, evening wear or pyjamas! I have noooo idea how to do "casual". My mum had to take me shopping when DS was 2 weeks old, so mostly have t-shirts and denim skirts from gap. Think I am starting to get the hang of dressing myself again, and having to find a new style (that's compatible with a very vomy baby). Anyhow...... back to topic...

I only buy from boden in the sales, and my mum spoils ds with their baby clothes. I would never normally by boden for my ds as it too expensive and he keeps growing too bloody quickly!

madmomma · 17/09/2011 21:09

how rude and unwelcoming. Just no need to pick apart someone's turn of phrase and patronise them.

madhousewife · 17/09/2011 21:45

totally agree madmomma.
if you want to attack someone lurk on aibu, i come on s and b for inspiration and lightheartedness.

zara beats boden hands down btw.

EdithWeston · 17/09/2011 21:51

Boden isn't a "mummy" catalogue any more. It used to have a range of styles, so whatever your basic body shape, there was something for you. It is now skimpier, unforgiving on Mummy tummies, and the large of boob. I've pretty much given up on it.

Instead, try Woollovers and Poetry for adults, and Lands End Kids instead of mini-Boden.

electra · 17/09/2011 21:56

I'm rather disappointed to hear that Johnny is such a twat as about half of my children's clothes come from Boden every year without fail. I'm 31 - I would never buy anything for myself from Boden it's way too frumpy not to mention the cost. I still shop at Topshop, Oasis, Warehouse etc.

electra · 17/09/2011 22:04

Edith - I like the look of Land's End Kids, thanks for that I've never heard of it before.

VivaLeBeaver · 17/09/2011 22:05

In the photo in the times it didn't look like any of his three girls were wearing Boden. Grin
