As requested by thefish, here we go! I went last week with a friend (booked about 6-8 weeks in advance I might add), and it was FAB.... despite me feeling rather nervous as I was unable to answer questions like "who is your style icon?".... . Was given my own stylist (v sweet, about 18 years old, matchstick thin, had no concept of how I might be feeling as chunky frumpy mum with assorted food stains on most of my clothes), who was brilliant. Chose the option of NOT going round the shopfloor with her (felt tired just looking at the crowds of 16 year olds and scary 80's retro gear out there), and relaxed until she re-appeared with a giant rack of clothes that I would never have tried on myself, but some of which actually WORKED....
All in all, was a marvellous afternoon !

wessexgirl · 12/12/2005 12:58

Does it have to be a big-city branch, orangina, do you know?

orangina · 12/12/2005 12:59

crap ideas.... having said i wanted to try and disguise/minimise my flobby tum, she did turn up with a few tops that looked exactly like my maternity gear of last year.... plus a few throwback to the 80s (when she wasn't even a glint in anyone's eye, so she wouldn't understand why i HATE it so). Plus some yucky brown cardy thing that made me feel exactly as though I should be standing wearily at a school gate somewhere.... on an up note though, I told her all of this () and she didn't mind...!

I went to the oxford circus one.... if you go to the topshop website, you can click into a link in there about personal shopping... they do offer it at other places...

i actually bought a SKIRT, which I haven't done for ages... rather nice and swishy, on the knee, with a few beads at the bottom, which I can wear with my frye-style boots (which I conveniently wore on the day.... basically everything goes with the boots!)...

OP posts:
orangina · 12/12/2005 13:04

also, a pair of rather slinky 3/4 length jeans, can wear ticked in or outside said boots (or other boots as it happens).... plus also a pair of 3/4 length vaguely tweedy trews which I surprised myself by liking a lot .... also, groovy belt (not the sameold sienna one...), some v useful long vest tops and tshirts (everything I own pre-dd is short and shows off my lovely spare tire), a sweater i would NEVER have chosen, god what else? the bag seemed bulging.... lots of LAYERS (the best look to sport this season I'm sure.... )

Sounds fun. I'm impressed that you found some good things as I thought anyone over 8 stone wasn't allowed through the Top Shop front door. Hey....you're not 8 stone or under, are you?? If so, I'm afraid I can't contribute to anymore of your threads as they will be completely irrelevant to the world in which I exist.....

TheFish · 12/12/2005 13:05

ooh botht hose trews soundn nice
links please

orangina · 12/12/2005 13:05

definitely go with a pal, though we did make friend with another girl who was doing the same thing (by herself), and we found ourselves pinching things from each others clothes rails (grass is always greener etc...). The only thing that would really have made it PERFECT would have been a glass of wine ...

kitegirl · 12/12/2005 13:11

will i emerge looking like madonna??

walkinginawelshmumwonderland · 12/12/2005 13:11

Hello Earlybird (waves) Top Shop is definitely not just for the 8 stone. I go there alot and I'll never see 8 stone again (unless my leg is cut off)Trick is to go at 9am when it opens and is quiet with just women of a certain age with or without a buggy and try on loads. Then have a cuppa and cake and/or feed baby. I've found that since the stuff is still quite cheap I don't mind the baby vomitting on it so much. Hope all's good with you x

Mum2Ela · 12/12/2005 13:17

Cardiff Topshop is a bit crap as its all stairs and no lift, not great with a buggy.

walkinginawelshmumwonderland · 12/12/2005 13:34

Oops sorry was only referring to Oxford Circus as I know Earlybird is a London girl. Don't know how good the other shops are for buggies

orangina · 12/12/2005 13:36

i am so not under 8 stone, those days are long gone i fear , hence the need for professional advice...

OP posts:
Caligyulea · 12/12/2005 13:38

pmsl at not minding vomit on the clothes as they're so cheap!

So what's in fashion that's eighties? I loved the eighties (I was young and gorgeous then.) Are leg warmers back? I don't care if they're naff, I was thinking the other day how useful it would be to have a pair.

Do you actually have to buy some clothes if you have a personal shopper?

orangina · 12/12/2005 13:41

oooh, also, i bought a jersey top that had horizontal stripes that at first i flatly refused to try on, feeling certain i would look like a giant barrel.... but it looked great, would never have bought it...

OP posts:
orangina · 12/12/2005 13:42

you don't have to buy anything, there is no pressure at all. THey are really keent o just make sure you have a good time, water/tea/coffee/juice on tap, and they were all really nice and helpful.... (and no-body ever showed me the carrot shaped jeans or leopard skin leggings )

OP posts:
orangina · 12/12/2005 13:43

1980s.... mohair batwing sweaters.... anything electric blue... skinny jeans (sorry, just CAN'T do them...)

OP posts:
Caligyulea · 12/12/2005 13:44

Hmm... mohair batwing sweaters... don't remember them first time round... I must have blanked them out.

Not sure about skinny jeans now either. Might have to start a new thread....

orangina · 12/12/2005 13:49

Also, they have shoes, boots, belts, accessories etc, so none of that not knowing what to wear with "it" (whatever you are trying on....).
