This is why the RACOON scarf is so horrible -

"To illustrate the awful conditions on Chinese fur farms, disturbing undercover footage by Swiss Animal Protection/East International shows raccoon dogs taken out of their cages; to stun them the men swing the animals and slam their heads on the ground ? sometimes again and again. The footage shows raccoon dogs coming around and then being bludgeoned with wooden poles again and again ? supposedly to kill them without marking their fur.
Animals are then skinned, many of them whilst they are fully conscious. The same footage shows a man cutting into a racoon dog?s belly, in pain and panic the animal tries to bite him, but the man just stamps on his neck and carries on. The raccoon dog is hung up by hind legs and the man starts to pull the animal?s skin off ? the racoon dog goes frantic trying to escape. After having the whole skin pulled off the animal is still alive, lifting his head up and down. He is left to die, which takes an excruciating 10 minutes.
As China exports almost all the fur it produces, blame not only lies at their door, but also the rest of the world." This is taken from the VIVA website and if anyone wants more information it can be seen in full at

And there is no way of knowing where the fur used to make the scarf came from. So whilst you can know that your roast chicken came from a free range farm, your cosmetics were not tested on animals, there is just no way of knowing with fur.

Higgle's post is why I can't buy fur. Any of it. And the scarf is not nice for road-kill type aesthetic reasons.

Pootles2010 · 07/09/2011 13:53

But as with cotton, you don't know where the raw material has come from, it's quite impossible.

Pootles2010 · 07/09/2011 13:55

Although having said that i've just looked on the etsy shop, and it looks like it's vintage. Still wouldn't be happy though, but thats just me!

southeastastra · 07/09/2011 13:57

it looks as what it is, an animal's tail, that once graced a poor animal.

carriedababi · 07/09/2011 14:45

i always thought fur was ok as i thought they used the rabbits or whatever for cat food.
i think i'll give it a miss then.
i didn't know they did things like "most animals whose pelts are used are electrocuted
anally."

Gassing is more common - if you think about the ease of gassing animals in cages, versus trying to hold the animal whilst inserting a metal probe into its anus, it doesn't actually make much sense.

I don't think anyone can defend the Chinese fur trade, but European fur is much more humanely fared, certainly much gentler than much of the meat food trade.

It's also a myth that the carcasses are just thrown away, they go into pet and animal food.

bishboschone · 10/09/2011 10:32

Omg higgle ...that is horrific.....how can a human inflict that on a living creature ?? Awful awful awful :(

CakeandRoses · 10/09/2011 10:35

How can a human inflict that upon themselves?

rimmer08 · 10/09/2011 15:54

horrid , even worse that its real fur . sorry.

bishboschone · 12/09/2011 11:20

I meant an animal

AntPants1 · 12/09/2011 13:22

I am afraid for all the reasons given by posters above I just could not bring myself to wear real fur. So for that reason I do not like your scarf. I am sure you could find a good fake alternative. Perhaps we could all focus on finding you something else.

AntPants1 · 12/09/2011 13:26

Have just had a very quick look on the web. Lots of really good alternatives out there.

I am sure you could find something lovely which will not be at the cost of another animal.
