Isn't it about time those hideous leggings sloped back to the 80's were they belong?!!!!

I've never been a fan, and think it's high time this awful trend died a death! Is anyone else sick to death with shops awash with leggings and tunic style tops/dresses?!!!

No way! Leggings make me slim and lovely, with ballet flats and floaty shirts in the summer and jumpers and long jersey tops from hereonin. They are a pregnant woman's lifesaver too, I haven't had to buy any pregnancy-specific bottoms apart from a Topshop maternity black jersey pencil skirt for skool.

YouDoTheMath · 02/09/2011 10:40

I've just converted to them and am fully aware some people don't like them, but I'm finally comfortable after years of being trussed up in ill fitting jeans because I'd never considered there to be an alternative, so I don't care Smile

HellonHeels · 02/09/2011 13:20

I like leggings because I'm a bit of a chunker and they are more summery than tights with a dress but stop my thighs chafing.

aquavit · 02/09/2011 13:32

I find the generalised leggings hatred weird. Sure, there are some bad examples of the genre but you could say that of anything. They are a MARVELLOUS alternative to tights imo (not that I don't also love a good tight). Cropped ones can look fabbo, so can full length ones. Obviously it is daft to wear them if you aren't covering your arse with something/they are too baggy/too tight/they are wet-look.

But then I am very tall and gorgeous and look great in anything Wink

rookiemater · 02/09/2011 13:34

No cannot agree with you OP. I was a bit mmmm about the leggings thing until I got a pair in the Boden sale and now I am converted, do have to make sure I wear something that covers my arse on top, but they are so more relaxing than jeans, plus I have great legs ( and a lumpy torso) so its a good way to show them off without having to wear a skirt.

Walnut8 · 02/09/2011 13:36

Why not tights? Why leggings? Unless worn with boots, don't you find they add that instant frump factor of making your legs look shorter?

louloubellamozzarella · 02/09/2011 13:53

If you get the right length and colour to go with your outfit and get good quality thick but close fitting ones, they are great.

IMO, wearing tights all the time is boooring - leggings give a different look and also another option from wearing skinny jeans.

I am under 5'5 and amazingly enough, even though I'm 'small' I'm not actually a midget Shock. You can buy petite fit leggings that are a perfect length.

Not a big fan of the 3/4 length ones though - they are best left to kids and young teenagers. Full length look way better.

MissJezebelTallulah · 02/09/2011 13:56

I totally agree, there is absolutely no excuse for leggings!!! They look awful on everyone apart from very skinny young girls, as Walnut8 says they are completely frumpy on anyone over the age of 19! Why would you want to dress like you daughter?!

As for the elasticated waistband, well, once you start on that there's no going back is thereGrin

Tunics are another matter entirely, disgusting and very 'American moo moo' in styleGrin

BalloonSlayer · 02/09/2011 13:59

"Yes. Especially when worn by people with large legs"

  • disagree. I think large legs look nice in leggings, it's skinny heron legs that in leggings make you look like Max Wall or Blackadder like mine that look stupid
cyb · 02/09/2011 14:00

Walnut depends on length of leggings and height of heel. And slimness of leg, of course

sjuperwolef · 02/09/2011 14:02

i used to hate leggings but finally gave in and now love them, i feel a lot more feminine in them compared to jeans. maybe because they are form fitting? i dont wear the god awful tunic things either, i wear long jumpers or a vest top and a shirt, have been known to wear pretty strappy dresses and sandals too.

cant stand the see thru bum barers tho Shock at ppl who go out like that and them wonder why everyone ok i am staring at them mouth agape.. uck and the camel toe sharers i do not want to see your fanjo flaps, seriously keep them to yourself!

Walnut8 · 02/09/2011 14:07

can't stop laughing at sjuperwolef.

The stop-at-the-ankle thing bothers me. How are leggings more interesting than tights?

MelinaM · 02/09/2011 14:11

Grin Grin @ "American moo moo" and ^ "fanjo flaps" !!!!

Why not a beautifully cut pair of trousers? ..or shock horror, naked legs? Grin

OP posts:
sjuperwolef · 02/09/2011 14:13

i used to have lovely legs .. yrs of clubbing and dancing all night long they were superb.. then i pt on a bit of weight and got cellulite, now im pregnant i have it even worse and i am that lovely scottish colouring -red and pasty - so without a fake tan i look like a walking wrinkly chicken drumstick Blush

Balconygarden · 02/09/2011 14:17

I vowed never to wear leggings again some time in the early '90's, was horrified when they made a reappearance a few years ago, gave in and bought a pair, and now can't believe that I put up with uncomfortable trousers and itchy tights for so long. They're a great alternative as long as some ground rules are followed - bum covered and a good quality fabric. I also have leggings of varying thickness depending on the length of what I'm wearing over them - thin ones for (just over the knee)dresses, thick ones for long jumpers and tunics that hit mid thigh.

cyb · 02/09/2011 14:21

Melina well cut trousers cost a bomb and some of us have slim but corned beef/stilton veined legs

sjuperwolef · 02/09/2011 14:25

eek thats true cyb, my oldest friend has slim little legs but they are almost see thru with purple and blue viens she always looks like she's been to the polar ice caps when she gets her legs out the poor thing.

Ripeberry · 02/09/2011 14:25

Much better than those horrid low cut jeans and short T-shirts from the early 2000's. They were horrid and it was very difficult to find something to hide my then baby bump.
Tunics and leggins are made for pregnant women or a spare tyre Grin

aquavit · 02/09/2011 14:26

you can't wear a beautifully cut pair of trousers under a dress without looking like a complete fool

leggings (or footless tights) sometimes work better than tights because some shoes look better with bare feet

sometimes just because it's a bit different, you wouldn't wear the same pair of beautifully cut trousers every day either

i could go on

Walnut8 · 02/09/2011 14:29

aquavit as you are tall and gorgeous, your opinion doesn't count Grin

TrillianAstra · 02/09/2011 14:32

As long as you wear them as an alternative to tights, NOT an alternative to trousers they are alright.

Exactamundo.

If you want to go trouser shopping for me (and pay for them) because my leggings offend you so much then go ahead.

ScarletLady01 · 02/09/2011 14:53

I wear them as an alternative to tights. They're better as they don't ladder. I'm tall (5'11") and have long legs so I think they look fine on me. Yes I'm over 19 (27) but they fit in with my style. I don't wear them with tunic tops. I tend to wear them with punky boots and skirts/dresses or long vest tops.

Couldn't give two hoots if people disapprove.

I also have JEGGINGS! Shock horror.

That said, you wouldn't know they weren't skinny jeans...they're very nice ones.

I have leather look ones too...I'm sure some people don't like them but hey ho.

MelinaM · 02/09/2011 15:54

I wasn't advocating the trousers for beneath a dress, bit as an alternative to leggings with long line tops etc...

Why the need for leggings under a dress anyway, a dress is just that, a single garment, you wear it on it's own!!! If you don't like your legs wear a longer dress! ...I blame Trinny & Susannah for that trend Grin

OP posts:
Ephiny · 02/09/2011 15:56

I think they're universally awful, but from previous threads on the subject, I know most people here love them, so you may not get much support OP! I remember leggings and ski-pants from the 80s, thought they looked ridiculous then, and they really don't look any better now (probably worse as more people are overweight these days!). I hate the tunic-style stuff as well, the whole combination is just very unflattering and unfeminine - to me it just seems like laziness on the part of the designers/manufacturers not to have to bother tailoring clothes for a woman's shape any more!

I can understand the comfort argument actually, they do look nice and soft and stretchy, still think they look dreadful though. Even those tall slim gorgeous ladies who would look good in anything, tend to look good despite not because of the leggings!

MissJezebelTallulah · 02/09/2011 15:58

So leggings are worn because they are cheaper than a proper pair of trousers, yes? How bizarre, they are a lazy way of dressing, look scruffy, and are of the same ilk as tracksuits et al.

Trinny and Susannah have A LOT to answer for Melina Wink
