What do you wear of you don't wear jeans?

I have a feeling a there similar to this may have been on here before, so apologies if it has.

So I'm looking for an alternative to jeans, mainly because I wear the same pair ALL the time, they're losing their shape, and I want to feel a bit better presented. Unfortunately I don't have long, lean legs - I'm not fat, just not tall and skinny!

I never have more than one pair of jeans at a time and nearly always wear dresses and skirts.

I'm not getting caught in the c--v argument, but the Houlihans are (to me, anyway) ugly and look as if they ought to cost £9.99.

fannybanjo · 28/08/2011 20:38

Grin - i think we've all agreed to disagree re Houlihans!!!

MrsCampbellBlack · 28/08/2011 20:39

Am still chuckling to myself at the thought of bonsoir wearing something 'chavvy'.

And obviously agree that its a horrid word.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 28/08/2011 20:40

Yes, that's my point really, about S&B and about MN more generally - one woman's meat is another woman's poison, or summat.

MrsCampbellBlack · 28/08/2011 20:50

Indeed.

I too was a houlihan hater until I tried them on and felt the lovely soft twill and saw their slimming effects. Oh and was of course influenced by seeing Natalie Massanet wearing them in vogue and kidding myself I'd look just like her in them Smile

But seriously - its of course fine for us all to have different taste but some comments in this section recently have been pretty mean.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 28/08/2011 20:54

That's probably why I don't often stray into S&B, MrsCB. It often seems rather, ahem, fierce.

MrsCampbellBlack · 28/08/2011 20:57

It can be Maud and I actually think its a shame.

I love fashion and am happy when in the mood to look for shoes/dresses etc for people and even if something isn't to my taste I don't feel the need to be really mean about a dress that someone has bought and loves.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 28/08/2011 21:02

It is a shame, MrsCB, but (as I said earlier) it's not confined to S&B. The attitude of "if you don't think and act like me you must be mad/stupid/worthless" rears its not very attractive or stylish head all over MN.

fannybanjo · 28/08/2011 21:06

I LOVE S&B - it's like the wolves hunting the chickens.... On MN some posters are very vocal on discussing what shouldn't be discussed. I say GET a fucking life.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 28/08/2011 21:09

I have no concerns about what is discussed. I am sometimes surprised by the tone and language in which things are discussed.

ohtobeoriginal · 28/08/2011 21:15

Why stress yourself?

Wear what feels right for you and if jeans tick the box stick with them, you'll also feel more confident and relaxed if you aren't having to worry about what you are wearing. Dress up when the occasion requires it.

MillyR · 28/08/2011 21:32

I am another one who no longer wears trousers or jeans of any kind. Since this whole skinny trouser/jean thing came in, trousers have mostly become uncomfortable and unflattering. My legs are too long for almost all women's trousers anyway, so I only have a very small choice to begin with.

I now only wear skirts and dresses, unless there is an extreme blizzard, in which case I will put on black snow trousers that I bought in Iceland so they are Scandinavian physique length.

ragged · 29/08/2011 09:07

I love my denim jeans, nothing about this thread has changed my mind :). I wouldn't be me in anything but jeans most the time.
But I like leggings under skirts, have been wearing them that way for almost 20 years (how strange when my style comes into fashion!). So am glad to raid ideas for good leggings (& tights, have too many shirts I never bother to wear).

Cannot find a definitive link to Houlihans... These are them, I guess? I can only find them selling for like 180 quid, are you guys insane??? Are they like a X between leggings & skinny jeans? yet somehow not the same as jeggings? And low-rise with more pockets (cargo style?)? Funny that jeans are slagged off here for showing knix at the thop, but then others are endorsing the houlihan thingies.

colditz · 29/08/2011 09:09

Short skirts with leggings, dresses with tights, shorts, black trousers - all sorts of things. I only have one pair of jeansand I don't war them much. I wear them for blackberry picking.

MrsCampbellBlack · 29/08/2011 09:40

These are the ones I have but bought in sale so cost about £80. And they don't show my knickers when I bend over Shock

Millie1 · 29/08/2011 11:26

MrsCB. The J Brand skinny cords you mentioned earlier ... what sort of rise are they? I think I might have seen them on the Revolve website but they look low-rise. I need mid ... or even high! Searched last year for a nice pair of skinny cords without luck - Kew's were lovely except they wrinkled like Nora Batty tights on the knee Grin

MrsCampbellBlack · 29/08/2011 12:05

These ones - I tried on in Harvey Nichols and they were over £200!!!

Millie1 · 29/08/2011 13:11

Oh they're lovely! Thanks for the link. Footwear wise, I wouldn't wear heels - boots or pumps okay? Do you mind me asking what the pricing worked out like - how do customs charges get worked out? And what are the colours like IRL? Really like them!

auntierozzi · 29/08/2011 14:32

What are Houlihans?

auntierozzi · 29/08/2011 14:33

oh dear sorry I've just seen :-) I'm a bit new to this.

MrsCampbellBlack · 29/08/2011 15:04

With the discount code TULIP which gets an additional 10% off and free delivery - I think it was just over £90. Customs was about £20 so all in all 50% of the retail price in the UK.

The colours are lovely - are you near a good denim shop as they should have some that you could try and then order from revolve.

ragged · 29/08/2011 15:06

Meh, Houlihans, I don't approve of pockets you can't actually use. And as someone who is used to 3 quid pairs of jeans from the charity shop... 80 quid? Shock

noddyholder · 29/08/2011 15:14

dresses with tights and boots/heels
Harems but not jersey ones much I think stretchy things make you fat
Ankle length chinos in all colours
But if I didn't have jeans I would be in trouble at least 4 days a week! I have houlihan style trousers but are a bit dated now.Not the real ones though asda's finest and surprisingly good quality.

MrsCampbellBlack · 29/08/2011 15:18

Indeed - nothing like putting on your jeans to know if you've gained weight.

Have worn too many dresses this summer and now my jeans feel tight.
