Sooo...how do we feel about coral pink trousers on a 50 yr old man?

ShellMex · 29/07/2011 14:35

I am the man in question and yes I have name changed.

Just checking with you style mavens to make sure this is not the biggest style faux pas since the kilt and DMs look.

The thing is, I like these coral pink flat fronted chinos and they are in a sale and DW likes them too.

Am I having a late-onset mid life crisis, am I going to look like I'm trying way too hard or is it a younger man look or are they actually OK for a slimish 50 yr old bloke to wear on holiday or even on the High Street?

And they mustn't be EVEN REMOTELY tight in the crotch. Think Ray Mears.

JonahB · 29/07/2011 15:27

I'm also curious why the OP has named himself after a building on the Strand (racks brain to contemplate various 50yo-ish work colleagues who work in office overlooking Shell Mex, who could be at this very moment in time contemplating breaking the 11th commandment - thou shalt not wear pastel clothes if over the age of 23).

nenevomito · 29/07/2011 15:28

Coral Pink.

Probably not a good idea.

(said the mistress of understatement)

Zondra · 29/07/2011 15:46

I'm in Herbaceous & AbsDuCroissant's camp here...it could be sexy in a continental, Euro-yachty way if your louche & suave enough?...I say go for it!
Your DW has given the thumbs up,anyway so, your onto a winner with regards to her.
Also,life is too short for beige & boring. Maybe,they will be a mistake,who knows? Who cares,though? :)
Btw-I am a woman who wears silk, leopard print harems,so,maybe you shouldn't listen to moi! ;)

AbsDuCroissant · 29/07/2011 15:56

Zondra - those sound AMAZING

YoungishBag · 29/07/2011 16:00

Yes if under 30 and super skinny

Anything else closeted Tory.

ShellMex · 29/07/2011 16:00

Mmmm....some variety in the opinions here.

The trousers in question are here. Obvioulsy, I am older but slim with short dark hair.

herbaceous · 29/07/2011 16:02

That's not coral! I've gone off the idea now. I like the way the model's sporting the brick red ones. That's how I was imagining the coral numbers.

ShellMex · 29/07/2011 16:02

Erm...obviously I am a Tory and went to private school.

OP posts:
HazeltheMcWitch · 29/07/2011 16:03

They are NOT coral. They are BABY PINK.

IMHO, best left to babies. Or young - ie

sue52 · 29/07/2011 16:04

That baby pink looks like someones put a coloured towel into the white wash. Not good.

TobyLerone · 29/07/2011 16:04

Oh God. Pastel RL trousers = wanker. Or gay.

I'd take the model wearing them, though.

HazeltheMcWitch · 29/07/2011 16:05

Ah, unless you meant the other ones, which are actually coral Blush

Go for it, OP, why not? Tory - tick. School - tick. Trews - tick.
It is your sartorial destiny. Probably best not to fight it.

AbsDuCroissant · 29/07/2011 16:06

That's not coral. NO. I retract my yes, not even Giorgio Armani could pull those off.

Though I'll share the model with Toby.

Fimbo · 29/07/2011 16:07

Do you mean the darker ones, where the bloke is wearing them with a denim shirt and turned up.

I suppose I could see them like that with those hideous Tom shoes that all the kids are wearing with a superdry polo shirt with the neck standing up. But face it man you are too old Wink.

AbsDuCroissant · 29/07/2011 16:08

Oh wait, the red brick.

Hm - what's the stomach situation? A bit paunchy? If yes - then no. If you're tanned, maybe.

You must be so happy you came to MN for style advice Grin

Zondra · 29/07/2011 16:09

Abs-They ARE amazing! ;) Lovely with gold cuffs & tan. I felt uber-glam floating around Palma in them!

Shellmex- My DH has the very same trousers but,in brick red. He bought them in the states a few weeks ago & he wears them in a similar way to the model in the pic. I love him in them. An ankle must be shown, though! ;) Go for it. Also, your colouring should be able to carry off the brick red. My DH is raven haired & he looks fabulous in them.

worldgonecrazy · 29/07/2011 16:11

Those are not coral pink, those are baby pink. Sorry I also retract my previous comments.

ShellMex · 29/07/2011 16:21

So I'm getting the sense that beige is my destiny from here to the grave.

Is there any other trouser colour a 50 yr old man can safely wear that doesn't scream incontinent pensioner or retired Colonel or gay Tory? Sad

OP posts:
AbsDuCroissant · 29/07/2011 16:24

Shellmex, you seem a reasonable man, so I'll help you out. firstly, if you do it with panache and you're well groomed, you can get away with more than just beige chinos and cardigans, it just takes more effort.

Get thee to this blog for inspiration.

Zondra · 29/07/2011 16:25

ShellMex- You say you are 50, dark-haired & slimmish. There is absolutely no need to break out the beige! Get the brick red & be done with it.

ifancyashandy · 29/07/2011 16:26

I agree that the ankle must be shown! And Think they would look good with a crumpled (white) linen shirt. Untucked. Stylish!

Fimbo · 29/07/2011 16:27

\link{http://www.landsend.co.uk/pp/Unisex-Trekker-Slip-ons~5419_253.html?bcc=y&CM_MERCH=IDX_00008&origin=index\these} shoes match nicely dontcha think?

worldgonecrazy · 29/07/2011 16:28

I like the brick red ones too but think that ankle is the preserve of the under 30s.

sleepysox · 29/07/2011 16:30

My Sindy doll used to have a pair of those in the 80's.
