Beautiful shoes for the wide of foot - a campaign perhaps?

HerRoyalNotness · 27/07/2011 10:48

I ordered a pair of LKB Sledge shoes in Charcoal which were totally gorgeous, but alas could not get my feet into them

Who makes beautiful shoes for wide feet? Or do we need a campaign for current manufacturers to add a wide foot option to their most popular styles?

I have wide feet too - they grew when I was pregnant and have stayed that size. I find shoes nowadays terrible. They are narrow and either very high or completely flat with no support (unless of course they are granny shoes.) I actually like platforms because they give a bit of extra height and are easy to walk in unless they have a ridiculously high heel like so many of them have. Why can't we have good looking shoes we can actually walk in?
Are all shoe designers men?

azazello · 28/07/2011 11:18

I like the Duo shoes. Thanks for that link. I have wide feet and find Asos ballet flats quite comfy but that is probably because they're made of paper and collapse after a few months. LK Bennett doesn't work for me at all.

rookiemater · 28/07/2011 20:36

I'll sign that campaign too. I used to have narrow feet until I had DS, then over the past 8 months I have been training and done one half marathon and it seems to have completely flattened my feet.
I have bought a couple of Josef Seibel sandals, most recently a pair of wedges, can't find a link for them so they might have been in last years collection. Some of the stuff is grannyish but some of them are nice.
Also bought a gorgeous pair of Paul Green red suede shoes in winter, they seem to be made reasonably broadly.
have been put off Fit Flop as all the women I saw on holiday wearing them didn't look as if they were benefiting much from the alleged toning element and i don't want to be a complete middle age cliche.

Stropperella · 28/07/2011 21:01

I have square feet. Size 4.5 - both ways, probably. And a high instep. Fly London boots are good and I have several pairs of shoes and boots from El Naturalista and Art - possibly an acquired taste, but needs must. Can't get my feet into anything by Clarks and neither can my poor dd. Not even the old lady ranges. If you can get yr feet into Clarks shoes, you haven't got really wide feet, I reckon.

Stropperella · 28/07/2011 21:02

Can't get my big square feet any where near FitFlops either.

caffeineaddict · 28/07/2011 23:01

Can I join too? I have square hooves. I used to wear the Nature Trek pasty shoes. Now limited to Fit Flops, Birkenstocks and one pair of trainers that must fit only people with freak like trotters like me.

caffeineaddict · 28/07/2011 23:03

I used to wear Nature Trek Cornish pasty style footwear at school. Now it's Fit Flop and Birkies. So I am watching this interest. I have the world's worst hooves.

CointreauVersial · 28/07/2011 23:11

Count me in! I have big old-lady bunions. My biggest problem is finding ballet flats that fit - everything I try on is cut so low on the toes that my bunion pokes out of the top, and the edge of the shoe rubs against it for good measure.

My most recent purchase was a pair of K-shoes from Clarks. Blush There has to be a better option.

LauLauLemon · 28/07/2011 23:16

I'm a size 9 wide foot.

Dressy shoes? New Look. About £30 a pair so they won't last forever but they're so generously sized I can sometimes get into an 8 (wide range).

Evans do a good range too.

stealthsquiggle · 28/07/2011 23:22

duo and wait for the sale. I have just ordered a pair which I was lusting after at £105, now down to £40 Grin. However, it would be really nice to be able to impulse-buy cheap shoes as wel... [sigh]

MrsDistinctlyMintyMonetarism · 28/07/2011 23:23

I am afflicted with feet so wide that even Birkis are a bit of a squish. I am mostly a middle aged cliche in Fitflops .

I also have high insteps and bizarre ankles.

Shoe shopping is my most hated activity.

stealthsquiggle · 28/07/2011 23:29

I have to say, price apart, Duo has revived my interest in pretty shoes, when I had given up altogether...

kindlekid · 29/07/2011 08:17

stropperella You are my foot twin Grin. That's exactly what I have - square feet and a high instep.

I can't get into Fit Flops either. I tried a friend's pair that were size 7 (I'm a 4.5 too) and they seemed really comfortable but couldn't get my feet into my size or the next size up.

I love my Birkies - I was in foot heaven the first time I bought a pair.
I can wear Converse if I open the laces section very wide.

Cointreau I bought a pair of dressy K peeptoes for a wedding. Can't wear them as they are too narrow [wails]

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 29/07/2011 08:24

Duo never seem to have anything in my size in the sale, only the odd one. I live in Scholl or Birkenstock toes post styles in the summer, haven't tried Fit Flops yet, maybe when I need something new. The one benefit of having wide feet is a very big gap between my toes so toe posts are never a problem. However my little toes hang over the side and I have stubbed them very painfully occasionally.

MigratingCoconuts · 29/07/2011 08:26

I use shoe tailor for my size 4, over wide feet (all width and no length Grin)

You have to trawl a bit but I just love wearing shoes that don't make me wince every time I a take a step....

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 29/07/2011 08:32

Ohh, just tried Shoe Tailor, go all excited when I opened the first page, put in my measurements to filter it and everything that came up was described as orthopedic or was just generally frumpy

stealthsquiggle · 29/07/2011 10:49

WhoKnows - it is worth consulting with Duo - I whinged about unavailability of my size in something (not expecting any response, if I am honest) and they came back and advised on which styles come up wide/long or the opposite - (so I was able to get a different width fitting) and they were right. I adore my Duo boots, and my favourite thing about winter is being able to wear boots and comfy socks, but the availability of pretty shoes is the best bit. Interestingly, I find I have automatically been buying shoes that are too long for years in order to get the width - with properly wide shoes I suddenly discover my feet are smaller than I thought!

Does anyone have any pointers for bargain birkenstocks? I am wearing crocs branded flip flops at the moment but would really like some birkenstocks (especially if I can get enviably girly ones like a friend has...)

ameliagrey · 29/07/2011 12:06

You should try have AA feet- the choice is limited even more.

People with wide feet have it easy in comparison as NO shoes come in narrow fittings unless you go to specialist shops.

All " normal" shoes are now a D fitting due to obesity ( sorry if you have wide feet and are not fat) whereas 30-40 years back the "normal" fit was a B in women's shoes.

I have more problems now finding shoes that fit than I ever had in my 20s due to shoes being made wider.

kayah · 29/07/2011 12:35

I am joining you in pain. Only found Clarks for flattish ones (I have to walk 15 min from my car to the office so high heels are out of question).

But Clarks quality is realy poor lately and I am in despair now.

I love nice shoes, but nowadays don't even try any other shops any more.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 29/07/2011 13:08

Stealth - that's interesting, I was not terribly happy with the only pair of Duo boots I have had so far as they are too big on my calves and make me look a bit pirate like unless I wear a longer skirt with them (they arrived when we were snowed in last Jan and I just didn't get round to returning them). They are also very loose round the ankles.

I bought a great pair of boots from Joe Browns last year which fit perfectly on both foot and calf with orthotics, they were so good I bought another pair the same, but they are very casual, would like a smarter pair so maybe I'll give Duo a ring.

Regarding bargain Birkenstocks, TKMaxx often have them in, but limited ranges / colours.

munstersmum · 29/07/2011 13:21

DamselinD yeh for duckfeet - me too.

Have bought sandals & shoes by Marco Tozzi (3in heel) from an independent shop in our town. Tolerable boots from Pavers.

susiefen · 29/07/2011 13:36

Me too! I have no idea who designs the M&S footglove stuff, but it is sooo frumpy. The also seem to think that wide feet means wide calves, so I end up looking like I'm wearing wellies! I did get a nice pair of Autograph wider fit, but I usually go to New Look. Other than that, I wear flip flops to work, then put on glam but uncomfortable heels and suffer quietly...!

stealthsquiggle · 29/07/2011 13:40

WhoKnows - I think you do need to go for the smallest you think you need in terms of calf fitting with duo boots - mine are bloody hard cosy to get on, but then fit perfectly and are very comfy once on (with no pirate effect).

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 29/07/2011 13:46

Yes, I can't remember exactly, but I think I measured my legs over jeans as that is how I intended wearing them, but then when they came they were much smarter, shinier and glossier than I had expected and looked funny with jeans, they are really a skirt boot. Should have sent them back really, but what with the snow and everything, never mind. I do wear them sometimes. Wish there was a Duo shop a bit nearer me.

bunglecat77 · 29/07/2011 16:01

Count me in.

I order online from Duo and M&S (it has to be at the start of the season before they sell out in my size, which means compromising on numbers - I only have three pairs of shoes at a time). If I need something to go with a certain outfit, like for a wedding, New Look often provides - just don't expect them to last long.... and they're always too high.

I wear mens trainers and walking boots most days. And I have to wear orthotics for flat feet (hello bunions - aaargh). So sandals and flip flops are out, too.

Can't believe shops still think the only people who would buy wide fit shoes are grannies - with granny-ish taste. Time for change!
