Facial Hair - Need Help!

Ugh. Ever since I've been in my teens I've had a v. slight moustache. Not many hairs, but they're very dark and noticeable, so I have them waxed once a month.

Now in my mid-thirties I'm sure it's getting worse, and I seem to have a few below the bottom lip too.

It's awful. I feel so masculine. :(

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can minimise hair growth. I once mentioned it to my GP who agreed that there was "texture", but that there's nothing I can do, other than "shave" Hmm

I've tried electrolysis (I think about 10 sessions) and it made no difference at all.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Gosh no don't shave it, that will make it a lot worse. If its just one or two dark hairs I would try and pluck them out. I have one stubborn hair that always grows above my lip and I pluck it out whenever it become noticable.
There are products out there for facial hair removal if you look in superdrug or boots. I'm not sure which are best. Have yout thought of lazer treatment?
I know my sister had her eyebrows done using this.

letthembe · 16/07/2011 21:14

Oh god I hear you. A couple of friends and I discuss the hair issue all the time. Why are we getting hairier? Chin hair - why?
Anyway, we are going to have a threading session in a few weeks. It's been highly recommended.
Good luck.

GoldenHaze · 16/07/2011 21:16

Thanks, Ivor. No, I won't shave it. I did once as a teenager and regretted it!

It's a fair few hairs now, and I don't seem to be able to keep on top of plucking them all. The ones below my bottom lip are eye-watering to pluck too.

I've tried creams, but find waxing more effective (although I've had my skin burned many a time!)

Is electrolysis the same as lasering? If so, I tried it but it didn't work for me.

I wonder if there's a medication that I could take. A hormone thingymajig?!

Ask your GP (or another in the practice) for Vaniqa cream, which reduces growth over time. There is also IPL, electrolysis, threading...your GP sounds a bit rubbish, tbh.

GoldenHaze · 16/07/2011 21:18

letthembe, yes I should try threading. Can they do it on very tiny hairs?

I have lots of very fine hairs (yes, I know that contradicts my OP, but on relection, it's a lot of hair, but very fine), so it's difficult to pluck them, but they're noticeable as I'm v. dark.

Theres a pill called dianette which sometimes helps, but you might not be a candidate- it depends on your age etc.

GoldenHaze · 16/07/2011 21:19

Thanks BitOfFun, my GP is a bit rubbish. I suppose he sees people with 'real' illnesses, to me as the moustached lady was a bit of a bore!

I'll ask about Vaniqa cream. Thanks for the tip.

GoldenHaze · 16/07/2011 21:21

I was on dianette for years and years as an anti-acne pill. It didn't work for me (but Roaccutane did). I didn't affect the facial hair situation either.

electrolysis is a long term thing but gradually you notice the difference and should get to a stage when you can go less often, for a shorter session. Pregnancy helps! (sadly not permanently)

AlwaysbeOpralFruitstome · 16/07/2011 21:27

This product is great for facial hair, it's basically a DIY threading tool and is great at getting rid of larger amounts of hair in a short time. Use after a hot bath and it's not too painful.

Oh and your not alone, without that thing I do a fine impression of a golden retriever - I practically shimmer in bright sunlight and not in a good way Blush.

BitOfFun · 16/07/2011 21:27

It is just a possibility, but have you ever asked to be investigated for PCOS?

HuntForGalaxyHazelnut · 16/07/2011 21:28

GoldenHaze

You can actually teach yourself to thread! I used This Website and can now get rid on my top lip, and chin hair myself. Be warned though, it takes a bit of practise and it's really painful!

I also found this threading tool and am thinking of buying one to try because threading kind of rubs on your fingers.

Faggotsnpeas · 16/07/2011 21:32

I use Nair hair removal cream which you can buy from Boots, and im sure you could get it in superdrug or any other of those tpe of shops. It works wonders, removes the hair and lasts a few weeks at a time, very easy to use

GoldenHaze · 16/07/2011 21:35

I think I have been tested for PCOS, BitOfFun. It was a while ago though. It's a pain because I've had this problem since the age of about 11, I suppose. It's become worse with age though. I REALLY hope DD hasn't inherited it, as it's rubbish!

I'll have a look at threading, thanks all. It does sound painful!

Faggotsnpeas, I've used Nair a few times before and it's fine but doesn't get to the root of the problem (no pun intended!)

willybreeder · 17/07/2011 09:26

Threading is great but take painkillers first and a stiff drink after!

kyacat · 17/07/2011 09:45

Ooh is threading painful? I'm considering trying it. Has anyone tried it for whispers nose hair? Blush

aquos · 18/07/2011 13:39

I've got PCOS. My hairs are very dark and quite thick. Upper lip, cheeks, chin and throat.

I've tried waxing but the hairs are so thick and dark, it's just too horrible to let them get to a length suitable for waxing.

I tried a few sessions of electrolysis, but didn't notice any difference.

Plucking with tweezers works best for me. I just need to put a few minutes aside each day for standing in front of a well lit mirror.

I haven't tried threading because I'm a coward.

I must give hair removal cream another go. Tried it a few years ago, but it kept sliding off my face before it had had time to work.

Ephiny · 18/07/2011 13:47

The Epicare is good, very similar to threading I think, but easier to do yourself! If you do it regularly the hair should start to appear finer/sparser after a while.

Definitely don't shave, I think that will look awful, especially if you've got dark hair. I'm wary of hair removal cream as when I've tried it on my face it burnt/irritated the skin, my skin is quite sensitive though.

hifi · 18/07/2011 18:12

huntfor alwaysbe
are the products you both recommended the same but huge price difference? would like to know before ordering, tia.

HuntForGalaxyHazelnut · 18/07/2011 19:30

kyacat

Oh God, I am cringing at the thought of threading nose hair!! You could try it, but it makes your eyes water just on top lip and eyebrow hair.

hifi
Yes i think they are basically the same, not sure why there's such a huge price difference!

kyacat · 18/07/2011 19:52

Ah. Probably just as bad as plucking it I suppose, although I think I read somewhere you shouldn't pluck it.. Confused

penneyann · 18/07/2011 23:55

Have had same problem for years. I always use immac on moustache and chin area. I put it on bout once a week before I shower /bath-just takes a few minutes. It works really well.

AlwaysbeOpralFruitstome · 19/07/2011 10:29

hifi - I think they are the same although I did read somewhere that there are 'cheap imitations' that don't work as well (i.e. break the hair off instead of pulling it out), however I suspect this is marketing bullshit. I would go for the cheap one and if it doesn't work that well, you've only wasted a couple of quid (well six quid with postage).

hifi · 19/07/2011 13:01

thanks, ordered

neepsntatties · 19/07/2011 13:54

Let us k now what it is like, I might get one too.
