How old is your oldest item of clothing?

I was putting away clothes today & realised that one of my shirts is 20 years old! I bought it in 1985 when I worked at Richard Shops & still have it.I do still wear it as it is a very thin cotton shirt that looks great tied over a dress or vest top,but I'm slightly embarrassed that I've kept it so long..

Can anyone beat me?

OP posts:
mykidsmum · 22/11/2005 20:55

No, because that would make me 6 when i had the item, but i do keep stuff for ages and recycle with the new trends
sorry not meaning to make you feel old or anything

dizzymama · 22/11/2005 20:56

I have a cardigan that is 25 years old, my Nan knitted it (when I was five!)and as it's wool it's stretched over the years and I wear it in bed on cold nights!!

dropinthe · 22/11/2005 20:59

What a good thread title! Congrats!

Can't beat but have a green, silk T shirt in my drawers that I still wear occasionally as is very large which I wore with pride on my first girly holiday to Ios when I was 18! Am now 36 so thats......urrmm....18 years!

rummum · 22/11/2005 21:00

Hey there Richard Shops
Make the world a prettier place..
Hey there Richard Shops

Or some thing like that...

I've got some knickers I bought in New York on my honeymoon 10 years ago. I know its not as long ago as 25 years but for pants I reckon thats pretty good

Angeliz · 22/11/2005 21:00

It's a tie: my red Justin 'roper' boots and my Frye 'Campus' boots. Both from 1989.

charlietherednosedpussy · 22/11/2005 21:07

I have a nighty that I got as a pressie when I was 7, im now 26 and its still going strong. It now shows my hairy bits though

I seem to have formed all my tastes at 17 so still wear a few things that are now 20 yrs old, velvet underground t-shirts & just resurrected for charity day at work my old stripey tights, felt so good to wear them again. Sigh.

mckenzie · 22/11/2005 21:26

by coincidence, I realised only yesterday that my lovely thermal vest that comes out every year and is still looking 100% is now 20 years old!

I bought it in Mothercare and the label says "age 11"! Not bad I guess seeing as I'm 40 next month but it is very stretchy.

roisin · 22/11/2005 21:27

Oh this thread is greatm makes me less embarrassed! I was ironing my shirt for work this morning and thinking it was looking a bit worse for wear, then I realised it is about 15 years old, and I was given it second hand (but in vgc). I think it does need to be retired to the textile recycling now though.

frannyandzooey · 22/11/2005 21:27

I've got a coat which must be about 13 years old. It's a long, flaring, military style with a nipped in waist. I think I'm right in saying it is now sort of back in fashion? I've been dragging it out every winter when it gets very cold, as it is incredibly thick and warm.

I also have a ridiculous hippie jumper, thigh length, with a hood, which I think may have originated in the 60s, but I bought it at a market about 15 years ago. It is superb for sitting round a campfire at festivals, sleeping in a muddy field etc, and looks better the more you abuse it. I plan to pass it on to my grandchildren.

starandsnowshaker · 22/11/2005 21:36

a jumper ive had since 15 so its 10 years old and its still fab

WigWamBam · 22/11/2005 21:48

Sadly I do remember the Richard Shops tune ...

Richard Shops are filled with all the pretty things
Soft and lovely pretty things to wear
Hey there, pretty things make the world a prettier place
Come pretty up, come buy your clothes at Richard Shops

The even sadder bit is I didn't have to google for the words ...

Whizzz · 22/11/2005 21:50

Actually probably the oldest thing I have & still wear is a black silky vest top from ....Richards ! They must have made their stuff really well !

sansouci · 22/11/2005 21:50

Christening dress, circa 1962. I've worn it, then dd and ds. Maybe their dc?

I've got a top I had for my 17th birthday (am 32 in January). Also have a couple of blouses that were my Nans, and a photo of her holding a newborn me whilst wearing one

yoyo · 22/11/2005 22:01

A towelling dressing gown which is 20 years old. Have towels I used in school so 27 years old (only threw out gym socks last year). Find throwing things away very difficult!

sansouci · 22/11/2005 22:03

I still have a pair of flowered knickers from M&S my best friend gave me when I was 13. Can't get into them anymore, not that I'd want to. Odd gift, eh?

tarantula · 22/11/2005 22:13

lol brilliant thread. I pulled out a jumper last night that I made while at college (92 I think) and thought hmmmm needs a bit of mending (my hand sewing isnt the best only lasted 13 yrs) but thatll keep me warm on the way to work. Have a few other jumpers that I knitted round that time too and an aran that belonged to my dad that he has had since the 60's. Also have some hippy style dresses in the cupboard that I bought at college 2nd hand which I wore this summer just gone as they were back in fashion .

I NEVER throw anything out. It goes in my chest and either gets taken out and worn again later or turned into something else.

Linnet · 22/11/2005 22:20

I have a purple jumper that I got when I was about 12 or 13 so that makes it about 15/16 years old. My mum hated this jumper and used to moan when I wore it. I'm actually wearing it just now because it's cold tonight and I can hear my mums ghostly prescence in house saying, "she's wearing that horrible jumper again!" LOL

bakedpotato · 22/11/2005 22:26

I have, and still love, a red-and-white striped long-sleeved t-shirt from Benetton bought half a lifetime ago when I was 18. (Until I saw What Not To Wear it was in regular usage but now I know about horizontal stripes, boat necks and bosomage .)
