How old is your oldest item of clothing?

I was putting away clothes today & realised that one of my shirts is 20 years old! I bought it in 1985 when I worked at Richard Shops & still have it.I do still wear it as it is a very thin cotton shirt that looks great tied over a dress or vest top,but I'm slightly embarrassed that I've kept it so long..

Can anyone beat me?

I have a pale brown crochet cardigan from Next which is about 10 / 11 years old - I still wear it loads and I love it!!!

I've become quite ruthless with my clothes in the last couple of years though, if it's hideously out of fashion, or too small, or if it looks too worn, I will give it away to a charity shop (or chuck it out!)

(Only 'cos it gives me an excuse to buy new ones!!!! )

I have a designer coat (Romeo Gigli) that I bought from my first job (working at Browns in South Molton St), that is about 18 years old. I paid for it bit by bit from my wages over about 6 months and its still the most expensive thing I've ever bought myself. Also, some original 1940's jackets & shoes that I still wear occasionally.

WalkinginaRainbowWonderland · 23/11/2005 09:48

Mmm... I also have an embarrassing array of 80's t shirts and tops (Top Shop/Richard Shops/M&S) oldest item must be about 20 years old.

I also have a fantastic LBD of my Mum's that she first wore in 1965. It's got a turtle neckline with hand stitched sequins and is beautiful - comes out most Christmasses when I have somewhere appropriate to wear it!

bit of a cheat here, but I have an original 1920's flapper girl dress. I've had it for about 20 years and did wear it to a couple of parties, but it's made os silk crepe de chine and is too delicate to wear anymore .

sparklymieow · 23/11/2005 09:52

I have a pair of sparkly hotpants and a bra top from when I was a 16 year old raver, so 10 years old, I can't see myself wearing them again, but you never know..

I still wear my wedding underwear as well. I have been married 7 years. I have a nightie that DH bought me before we were married so probably 9 years ago this Christmas. A chenille roll neck jumper from River Island bought before we were married. Some cut down Levis I bought in Dallas in 1994 only they weren't cut down then.

I have loads, my cowboy boots bought when I was 22, I'm now 36 - so 14 years and I still wear them A LOT!

I have loads of stuff bought pre-dh, so AT LEAST 10 years old - things like coats, jackets etc. However not much fits me anymore so I just keep it

lucycinco · 23/11/2005 10:05

Ive got a next cardi that I slob around the house in which is about 18 years old. It's just so slouchy I cant replace it. The cuffs are starting to fray but not bad really considering the age.

Mummyvicky · 23/11/2005 10:46

I have a snoopy nightie from 1987 that i wear most nights still ! Says age 9 on the label !!
Barely covers my arse but I love it !

Miaou · 23/11/2005 10:49

I have a beautiful black velvet fitted jacket with a big shawl collar that belonged to my great grandmother. I don't wear black but I make an exception for this jacket - it is beautiful! (Am too plump to wear it just now though )

sweetkitty · 23/11/2005 10:51

Have white denim hotpants from holiday in Tenerife when I was 17 (13 years ago now) will never ever be able to fit my bum in them again.

zebratwizzler · 23/11/2005 10:54

My mother kept one of my baby hand-knitted cardigans (I don't know why). I got it after she died... it's somewhere in the loft... so that's at least 36 years old.

I def. have some ordinary adult clothes nudging the 20yr mark. I had a decade or more of not wearing them so they're still in very good nick.

clary · 23/11/2005 11:37

pmsl at you lot.
Well I am wearing a black dress and jacket today (black is now banned from my wardrobe for new purchases) and when a colleague (who knows about the ban) remarked on it, I realised I wore it to a funeral when pg with DD who is now 4.5, so I've had it 5 yrs.
Otherwise I clear out all the time. Buy cheap tat and chuck it when it falls to bits/gets child-gam on it.
Also my size changes all the time (lots weight when had babies) so I need to keep chucking. Trying to limit the clutter. Did you know you wear 10 per cent of yr clothes 90 per cent of the time?

clary · 23/11/2005 11:38

sorry that should be lost weight when had babies.
Should also add that I wasn't very pg when wearing this dress at the funeral, it is a size 10 so quite impressed actually!

SeaShells · 23/11/2005 11:42

I still have my first ever bra, size 28A, thats around 17 yrs old. Obviously, after 17 yrs, 2 children, breastfeeding - it no longer fits lol.

MrsBadger · 23/11/2005 16:14

I still surf in the wetsuit that dh had as a gangly 13-year-old - he's 30 now so it's getting on a bit...

PeachyPlumFairy · 23/11/2005 17:02

Several items from when I worked at Customs and had spare cash, left there in 1995 so quite old then . Things I consider quite new though often turn out to date back to 2000 at least. And my wedding dress (not a white flouncy thing, dark grey embroidered dress and coat) gets worn occasionally to posher do's, that's from 2000 too.

I have a tatty bra in my drawer that I dated to 1992 , that's going in the bin NOW!

CarolinaMoon · 23/11/2005 17:06

I've got a winnie the pooh nightie from M&S that I've had since I was 14 - so 17 years. There are huge holes in the seams now

And a rather funky leopard-print jacket that I bought as a student, 10 years ago.

piffle · 23/11/2005 17:07

I have a pillow that I made in Home Ec at age 9, that my ds (11) sleeps with now.
I have an All blacks coat that I bought 17 yrs ago duck down serious winter kit, I wear it every yr!
