Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream - Beauty Myth?

lorelilee · 19/06/2011 17:59

why is it such a wonder beauty buy? What, other than as a lip balm, do you actually use it for?

OP posts:
GetOrf · 20/06/2011 09:30

havingkittens - you really do listen to those gals on the make up counters, don't you Grin

It's a load of old baloney. Kamillosan does the same thing at less that half the price.

I personally am not impressed at the racehorse heritage - I am not hugely keen on the idea of using veterinary emolients on my visage Grin

Emperor's new clothes.

HappyAsIAm · 20/06/2011 09:42

I mix it with moisturiser and it makes it much more spreadable and less sticky. I used it on horrible windburn that DH had when we went skiing one year, and on awful sunburn on my feet too. It worked wonders and I always have a tube of it in teh bathroom for emergencies. Its not soemthing I use every day though.

Havingkittens · 20/06/2011 09:59

GetOrf I am professionally obliged to know a bit about beauty products, what works, why etc. The racehorse info is incidental (and not stated to impress) rather than a selling point, but it's interesting to know these things. The interest was basically in the fact that it has abilities to heal the skin, whether it be that of a horse or a human.

I have recommended on here horse hoof ointment for strengthening nails because I know it works, and why, and am not put off by the fact that it is a product for horses. There are a fair few beauty products which are derived from treatments originally intended for animals. Space NK sells a range called Barielle which they charge through the nose for, and it's all based on horse hoof treatments! There is an american hair care brand called Mane & Tail which is derived from products used to condition horses course tail hair. I wouldn't be put off by the veterinary connections! What reason would there be to be put off? I'm always baffled by this idea! It's not the first time someone's said something similar on here. All mammals have skin and hair cells as well as all the same organs so why shouldn't products for animals cross over?

Like I said before, it is all completely subjective. Lots of people seem to love it. I try a lot of products out and always go back to the ones that work the best for me and my clients. In 17 years as a make up artist this product has been a constant staple in my kit, more so than many others.

But this is Mumsnet, so ....

8 Hour Cream is the same as Vaseline
Creme De La Mer is just German (?!) Nivea
Chanel Make up is Bourjois in a posh box
Caviar is glorified Taramasalata

Oh yes, and yellow foundation looks best on EVERYONE

Just for the record, each and every one of these Mumsnet mantras are bona fide Beauty Myths! (the one about taramaslata was a joke btw)

AitchTwoOh · 20/06/2011 10:03

did you formerly post under another name, kittens? and do recommend the hoof cream for nails again, will you, i am SICK of having bendy nails.

Havingkittens · 20/06/2011 10:14

Nope, always the same name.

The horse hoof cream I use is called Cornucrescine. It's available from tack shops or Ebay. You only need a tiny bit. It comes in quite a big tub but you really just need to dab your finger tip onto the surface and use what's on that finger to rub onto all 5 of the nails on the opposite hand, and repeat on the other side. It's used to build up the Keratin layers on horses hooves to keep them strong and durable so it does the same to your nails as they are made from Keratin too. When your nails get stronger I would stop using it for a bit though as it can make them too hard and brittle, but it's great for rescuing them from being weak and bendy or peeling.

GetOrf · 20/06/2011 10:17

Fair enough kittens, I was only being slightly narky. Smile

I totally agree with you btw on yellow toned foudnations. I have tried Chanel ones and they are all yellow and make me look vile. I am very pale with pinky undertones, the only foundations I can wear which really suit my skintone are Lancome or By Terry.

Havingkittens · 20/06/2011 10:31

That's ok GetOrf - I was probably being a bit over defensive! It's just sometimes when I pop in and try to be helpful I feel like people are throwing tomatoes at me. But then I guess Mumsnet is a bit like that sometimes! I also believe in the tried and tested products I've grown to love in my profession, so feel the need to fight their corner.

BTW, Laura Mercier do have some good pale pink toned foundations, so do NARS, MAC (some of theirs I like, some I don't), & Estee Lauder.

GetOrf · 20/06/2011 10:35

Yes, I have tried Laura Mercier, but I am so bloody devoted to By Terry now anything else seems inferior! I have also tried Estee Double Wear but it felt far too heavy and sticky.

I didn't mean to be sarcastic btw (oh that's a lie, sarcasm is my default position on here Grin), I have no place to talk as I spend a fortune on make up and if someone demonstrates something to me and it seems vaguely impressive I am a pushover. This is especially true of Space NK.

I still don't rate 8 hour cream though Wink

RIPSambuccaKelly · 20/06/2011 10:40

Boots No 7 Lift and Luminate foundation is Chanel Vitalumiere. FACT!

OK, not a fact really, but I swear, it is exactly the same, even smells the same! but costs 9 quid instead of silly monies.

strawberryjelly · 20/06/2011 10:42

'fraid I found it like super glue.

How you can use it then sleep in it on your face hands or whaever beats me- it's vile stuff.

BlooferLady · 20/06/2011 10:42

It's amazing! I use it for:
Lip balm
Lip gloss over lip stain
Elbows
Sore bitten cuticles
Eyebrows
Dry ends of hair
Sunburn
Small burns
Facemask if my skin is really gross
Spots

All that, and my tube has lasted about 18 months.

GetOrf · 20/06/2011 10:47

Oh I cannot BEAR Boot No 7. The whole range.

This is because one year for xmas I hinted that I would like the Estee Lauder box of make up they bring out every xmas. He took it upon himself to get the No 7 version instead.

I give him full and detailed xmas instruction now Grin

RIPSambuccaKelly · 20/06/2011 11:03

lol!@GetOrf

My husband once bought me John Lewis watch that 'looked exactly like' the Gucci one I wanted. Except it didn't. Boo.

expatinscotland · 20/06/2011 11:11

'i love the smell, am really surprised that so many people don't. but then i love coal tar and pears soap etc.'

Weirdo! :o

expatinscotland · 20/06/2011 11:40

Damn, that 8-hour stuff is expensive.

DiNammic · 20/06/2011 11:41

bobbi brown foundation made me look like i had a low level liver disorder
or marge simpson.

GetOrf · 20/06/2011 11:54

But you use vitalum don't you?

I tried that, none of the colours worked, had the jaundice effect.

Havingkittens · 20/06/2011 11:56

AitchTwoOh it's this stuff...

This is the smallest and cheapest tub I can find. I guess they wouldn't do it in smaller tubs as it's for horses and you need a considerable amount! This tub will probably last you your whole life for your own purposes though.

expatinscotland · 20/06/2011 11:58

Vitalum and my combination, acne-prone skin were not a good mix!

expatinscotland · 20/06/2011 12:00

Laura Mercier Oil-Free foundation is about the only thing that looks good on me and covers all my acne scars and sun damage, although the Liquid Gold stuff is really helping with that.

I'd love to have glycolic treatment or laser resurfacing.

AitchTwoOh · 20/06/2011 12:03

cheers, kittens!

i bought laura mercier concealer once and thought is was CHRONICALLY shit, so dry and awful. will have a try of the foundation next time i'm in the toon.

expatinscotland · 20/06/2011 12:12

I like the Laura Mercier concealer, but the one in the round pot, not the Secret Camouflage one.

The foundation works really well for my skin. My skin is combination, dry cheeks yet I still get spots on them Angry.

Lots of products cause me to break out in spots.

Everyone raves about Cetaphil, for example.

Gives me big spots.

Havingkittens · 20/06/2011 12:13

Yeah, they do a creamier version which is much better. The secret camouflage is rather dry. If you still have it, you could try scraping a bit off the top and mixing it on the warmth of your hand with some eye cream. The tinted moisturiser is brilliant I must say, especially the oil free one. The illuminating one is a bit shiny for my liking.

I'm rather liking MAC's new Pro Longwear concealer at the moment.

expatinscotland · 20/06/2011 12:15

The oil-free tinted moisturiser is wonderful. I've tried so many different kinds but it's the only one that really works for my skin.

So I get Laura Mercier makeup for Christmas every year from my sister, who buys it in the US and sends it to me.

It's so mega expensive here.
