Talk to me about mineral make up

any good?

Was given the sales pitch by Bare Minerals lady the other day and was tempted..

Am 43 and have broken veins, forehead lines, eye lines, nose to mouth lines and puffy eyes (you get the picture?) need something to even it all out a bit.

Have been using MAC studio fix for years now but its beginning to sit in the wrinkes.

Any suggestions???

I was told to use warmth in the shape of a 3 and E on each side of your face so start over your eyebrown and do the shape of a 3 down your right and an E down your left!

TattyDevine · 16/06/2011 20:52

That's facial contouring gregssausageroll - but a rather simplified description of it (good way to remember it though!) - if you look at Lisa Eldrige's website, here is a really good detailed video that shows you how to do it without getting the "snickers bar" brown streak under your cheekbone.

TattyDevine · 16/06/2011 20:58

Just to add, bronzer never really worked for me till I saw that video. I just didn't know what the jeffy heck to do with it.

I used BareMinerals for a while. Like, about 2 years. I too said "I'll never go back to traditional foundation".

Yet I have. Why? Don't quite know. It stopped looking as good. Don't know why. Maybe the colour changed. Maybe I aged 2 years and that was a crucial 2 years. Maybe I lost the knack. But I just started to feel a bit powdery and shimmery and wrong, and I looked funny even funnier in photos.

I needed less shimmer, less powder, but more dewy moisture. And I couldn't get an easy colour match. Couldn't be arsed blending it every day. I'll happily squirt 2 shades of foundation on the back of my hand and mix those but mixing powders is a different ball game.

And Bareminerals gets everywhere. It settles in a fine dust on your skirting boards and surfaces in a way that I started to grow tired of. We are talking tiny amounts but it just felt messy and unportable and in the end it wasn't delivering like it used to so I quit.

Anyone wavering I'd say get it from QVC. Browse at Debenhams, choose your shade, but get it at QVC and if you hate it you send it back within 30 days, even if you've used it, for a refund (minus postage, and you pay to send it back, but you are still a lot less out of pocket)

Oh, just a quick tip if you are struggling with the swirl in the lid of the pot (which can be quite small depending what size you get) you can get a much better swirl and tap if you use a brand new teflon coated Yorkshire Pudding pan. The sort with 4 little recesses for individual yorkshires. £2 at Tesco. Weird, but it works, and it looks odd but you can gently place it in a drawer and it doesn't take up much room!

TheDogsKnees · 16/06/2011 21:28

onlyaname - Google coconut oil benefits for the skin. I've started using it recently (i mean less than a week) and can already see positive changes. My skin sounds very similar to yours. This stuff is amazing and is good for practically EVERYTHING. Just make sure it's virgin (cold compressed) as the bleached/de-oderised (fractionated) stuff is highly comodegenic.

valiumredhead · 17/06/2011 07:41

Just to say colonel I don't use the 'warmth' bronzer stuff for the same reason - don't really need it and it looks odd on me even when the make up lady did it.

ColonelBrandonsBiggestGroupie · 17/06/2011 20:10

Thanks. I don't think I'll bother with the set then.

mippy · 17/06/2011 22:20

Bare Minerals has bismuth in it, which some are allergic to.

If you are very pale I'd highly recommend Everyday Minerals. They don't ship to the UK from their own site now which is a pain in the arse, but Cocktail Cosmetics sell it.

RollingInTheAisles · 17/06/2011 22:37

Alima Pure from the states is amazing and has no bismuth in it. The colours are beautiful and they ship to the UK. I have used Bare Minerals too and liked it to start with but not sure if it was irritating my skin.

sunshineatlast · 20/06/2011 14:00

Ok got the starter pack of Bare Minerals.. and today is Day 2...so far so good Smile

Really like the concealer.... bisque? it totally covers the broken veins without looking heavy.

I took the advice of using the paler shade with the concealer brush under the eyes and it looks so much better than the bisque stuff, so thanks for that!

The face veil stuff is amazing, makes your skin look really radiant. The brushes are good quality and the whole system is really quick and easy to use too.

So in a nutshell, it seems Im a convert. Goodbye Touche Eclat and Mac.
Thanks everyone Smile

Hehe that was me.

It can - if you get the wrong colour, or if you go with it too heavy. The wrong colour can make you look very ill. Whereas with a normal foundation it just makes you look tidemarked and orange.

Like I say I did use it for quite a while and at one point got a good result from it but I have to be quite tanned to be able to use their medium. If I am not tanned and use their fair, it just looks wrong.

I never rated their eyeshadows and blushes (also said on other thread) but I do think you can get a good result with their foundation if the colour and application is right and you have the right skin for it.

I also like their powder concealer for the side of nose area - a cream concealer often just slides off this quite oily area whereas a powder one can be both good coverage and staying powder.

Like I said on the other thread, there is no one makeup range that is totally pants and there is no one where everything is perfect. With this, some of you will get on with it, some wont, its horses for courses a bit. Its good how it gives extra SPF coverage.

ColonelBrandonsBiggestGroupie · 20/06/2011 19:14

Yes, the Bisque is v good indeed for the Voldermort-ish bits at the side of the nose. I don't rate it for undereyes at all though - am I doing something wrong?

I still really like the foundation and the veil, although the foundation is possibly a bit too yellow-toned for me.

sunshineatlast · 20/06/2011 19:23

Colonel try the lighter shade under the eyes instead of the bisque, someone on this thread recommended it and it works so much better.

Get me! giving advice now like a mineral make up expert after, errr.. 2 days...

:) Will do!

TattyDevine · 20/06/2011 20:28

I was never comfy using it under the eyes it was always a little clingy and powdery - I don't need a lot of help under the eyes though, I tend to be slightly puffy on a bad day rather than dark/blue if that makes sense so concealer isnt a massive help anyway, I need Anusol!

I do have red sides/under nose veins (nothing major but it gives a pink shadow) and I've had them lasered and everything and they came back. The war is not over though. Not by a long shot! I'm having them lasered again soon!

bettyboo83 · 20/06/2011 20:42

I am very pale (i.e. always buy alabastor or 00!) and got the bare minerals 'light' starter kit. I have a few spots and scars from previous break-outs so was a bit sceptical at first and it has taken some practise. The lady in Debenhams told be to use the 'fairly light' shade all over then the bisque concealer on spots, etc. but this made me look like I had little bruises on my face. I've found that using the 'light' shade all over (applied with a short stubby brush) then swirling the 'fairly light' shade over areas I want to conceal with the concealer brush gives me a really good coverage but still looks natural.

snailsontour · 20/06/2011 20:45

Warmth is similar to a bronzer, the key is to only use a smidgen - think just a few grains, swirl the brush in them, tap off the excess - if you are v pale I'd swirl the brush across the back of your hand first - then brush in a B shape on one side of your face then an E on the other. Does that make sense? I mean you run the brush around your hairline, across your face on the high point and then across under your jaw line - then the same on the other side.

Check out the QVC web site as they often have video's on there - or youtube

Only on special occasions Wink

Birthdays, christenings, that kinda thing Grin

ColonelBrandonsBiggestGroupie · 21/06/2011 17:04

I tried the lighter foundation colour under my eyes today, with a concealor brush but it still wasn't good - it just makes me look rather yellow and odd under the eyes and draws attention to tiny bumps under the skin. Need to find a different under-eye trick but am still happy with the foundation and veil overall.
