so i've decided that i'm going to join the gym now i've discovered a creche facility (wow!) and in order to do this i need something to wear!

where can you get decent jogging bottoms- i.e ones that don't cling around my legs, i'm thinking a heavier material..? and what tops would you wear? I want to be comfy but look OK as well

please bear in mind i have quite a bit of weight to lose so am not going to be wearing hot pants and crop tops, would probably be banned if i did...

Thanks!!!!

I really wouldn't wear heavy jogging bottoms to the gym, you will be really hot and uncomfortable before you've even started. If you want to cover up a bit try the light non-clingy bootleg style bottoms like these www.bethatbody.com/Zoca-Active/Zoca-Basics/98rzz845p.asp

For tops, you could just wear a loose t shirt at first and build up your confidence til you are ready to wear a gym-type top - the Nike dry-fit fabric is great for keeping cool and sleeveless is good. I like the stuff in John Lewis as it is real gym wear rather than fashion sports wear IYSWIM. I have bought stuff from the website I linked to as well and found their stuff and service good. Also check out Sweatshop for a good range.

Have you got a good sports bra?

I wouldn't feel too worried about exposing wobbly bits at the gym. The gym is there for people who want to shape up as well as those who are already fit. Most of the people there will be normal size! Not supermodels or athletes. Wear what is comfortable and enables you to do the best workout you can.

aw, thank you! yes, sports bra is a must (maybe two!) thanks for the suggestions, i think it is lack of confidence that is the problem and you're probably right about heavy sweaty fabrics!!

Have a rummage in TK Maxx. They usually have a decent range of sports clothes so you can compare styles / brands.

emsyj · 03/06/2011 22:18

Ooh yes TKMaxx is always worth a rummage.

Buy a light coloured sports bra, not stupidly a black one like I did (so it shows under all my light gym tops), der!!!! Mine wasnt cheap (£50) due to big boobage so will be a while before I can get another Sad

smartyparts · 04/06/2011 15:03

Please don't buy heavy jogging bottoms - they would be so hot and so unflattering.

Buy tights/capris with lycra and wear a longer/looser fitting t-shirt. Also, by the best sports bra(s) you can.

You get lots of fat people at gyms and no-one stares. It's not all poseurs!

DoubleDegreeStudent · 04/06/2011 16:59

I always feel much better about myself in my swiped from my sister's wardrobe sweaty betty stuff, but it isn't cheap. Gap have a sports range and they sometimes have quite good bits in - always worth a look, especially in the sale!

lollipoppet · 04/06/2011 17:59

Thanks for suggestions. Particularly good tip about non black bra! Can't help but feel a bit patronised/mixed by the "fat people at gyms" comment though.....

Something like these capris, and this top?
Most other people at the gym will be there for the same reasons as you. The hardest thing is the first time, then it's fine. My local gym is usually just me and the weight lifters. Intimidating!

woopsidaisy · 04/06/2011 18:15

Flipping hell Smartypants, would you say that to a strangers face? Go easy.

IMO people in the gym are not all skinny minnies. Most are average sized people who enjoy fitness. And I have never really even "noticed" the other people in the gym. Like them I'm busy doing my own thing. But I find everyone very friendly and supportive if you ask for help or anything.

Marks and Spencers do some decent www.marksandspencer.com/Sportswear-Womens/b/43118030?ie=UTF8&intid=gnav_women_sportswear gym wear. Reasonably priced too if your just starting off.

Good luck!

Sorry lollipoppet, didn't mean to offend you with my insensitive use of the 'f' word. You did say you had quite a bit of weight to lose Blush
