The shoes they wear to work. Quite likely to be seriously down at heel but as they cost more than he wanted to pay, he is bloody well going to keep wearing them.

Ha ha, that describes my dh and his work shoes perfectly. I also remember one specific pair having the laces knotted together in some boy scout fashion as they kept breaking. Clearly never heard of buying new laces.

TheProvincialLady · 23/05/2011 18:56

Ah yes, the knotted laces. I once persuaded DH to get some new laces as his were like your DH's, but he came back with some meant for tall boots as he couldn't remember how many holes his shoes had, and then cut them to sizeHmm

mrsravelstein · 23/05/2011 19:02

my dh favours a pair of slightly metallic lizard print cowboy boots... people tend to raise their eyebrows at them but i LOVE them

Jux · 23/05/2011 19:04

DH has more pairs of shoes than I do, but I don't think any of his are on that list. He does have a marvellous pair of suede winkle-pickets with silver buckles - I've known hom wear them once.

Who says that a gentleman should have them anyway? Why?

bumblingbovine · 23/05/2011 19:41

I really genuinely had no idea about the complexity of men's formal shoes. Shock

stylish shoes here

I can honestly say that have never seen a man wearing shoes with velvet bows on before (unless he was in fancy dress or something).

DialsMavis · 23/05/2011 19:48

DP has several pairs of trainers, flip flops, trainerish walking boot things (for work) and a hideous pair of smartish shoes from god knows where that he had to buy for a funeral.

My friends Dh had to buy a pair of really wanky Prada trainers because he inadvertently turned up at the airport for their weekend in Berlin wearing his slippers Grin

Meggles76 · 23/05/2011 19:50

clearly my husband is no gentleman then!
DH wearls clarks brown leather lace up affairs with gore tex for work (a casual office) - they retail at around £110 which he refuses to pay so, every year, he waits for the Jan sales and gets them for £65 (bless).
He also has a couple of pairs of camper boots that we got in Barcelona a few years back.
He also has 2 pairs of trainers - the ones with the 3 stripes on the side?
And trendy sandal things for when we are camping.

COCKadoodledooo · 23/05/2011 20:26

Cheers otcha. They're the only ones on that list he has though. Mid you he wears them day in day out.

He has Merrells, trainers (for running), hiking boots (for hiking) and a pair of sandals that he can't wear but won't throw away Hmm

JemimaMop · 23/05/2011 20:51

DH owns:
Rigger boots
Lace up steel toe cap work boots
Walking boots
Casual nubuck boots
Trainers
Sandals
Wedding shoes
Wellies

I don't think he has much in common with the man in the OP!

RhinestoneCowgirl · 23/05/2011 20:56

This is what DH says he has:

Work shoes, black leather
Hugo Boss suedey things for casualness
Ancient pair of Merrells for DIY etc
2 pairs of trainers (one for indoors, one for running)
Walking Books
Sheepskin slippers
Sandals
Steel toe capped shoes for DIY

Guess that means he's no gent...

expatinscotland · 23/05/2011 21:01

My husband wouldn't be caught dead in half those shoes. Sounds like a list for a metrosexual, not necessarily a 'gentleman'.

MrsSchadenfreude · 23/05/2011 23:19

DH says that wing tip Oxfords are for Yanks, not self respecting Englishmen.
And he shuddered and curled his lip when he reached "slip ons" and commented that the list had some credibility until that point. Grin

He knows his shoes. He spends a fortune on them, loves and nurtures them and gets very upset when they die.

ggirl · 23/05/2011 23:47

these fuckers are the wrost
i lose all respect when I spot these
and pmsl when it's an old fart wearing them

moondog · 24/05/2011 06:59

Ggirl, they are standard drug dealer/petty criminal uniform.

Any man who wear slip on shoes needs shooting at dawn to put us all out of further misery.

MrsSchadenfreude · 24/05/2011 07:03

Especially grey slip ons...

noddyholder · 24/05/2011 07:06

Mens shoes made in England are the best in the world without question. Italian men's shoes are a poor facsimile that are not capable of handling British weather.

I agree with:

Formal Oxford shoes (colours and styles of various kinds)
Gibson or Derby
Moccasin
Chelsea Boots
Derby Boots

Not sure people wear formal dress shoes nowadays. Driving shoes for racing drivers only. As for monk strap and slip on - I think not!

However, surely others are essential too:

Calf skin carpet slippers
Leather sandals
Flip flops
Gentlemans walking shoe
Wellington
Riding Boot
Hiking Boot
Work Boot (steel capped)

noddyholder · 24/05/2011 07:50

These lists sound like some sort of check list for prince bloody Charles before he goes off to balmoral and bears little resemblance to the pile of shoes in most halls up and down the country!

moondog · 24/05/2011 08:34

What;s that weird ensemble comprising flat arse in low slung jeans with elasticated cuffs and waist and slip on shoes??
OMFG

I saw some young hipster type dressed like this yesterday.
Last time I saw such a look was 1982 on Howard Jones' backing singers.

It was minging then.

moondog · 24/05/2011 08:35

at Charles and Balmoral

Fimbo · 24/05/2011 10:08

G Girl, your link made me smile, most definately SportsWorld/Direct man.

\link{http://www.tomsshoes.co.uk/mens?view=all\These} are surely the worst ever. With pegleg trousers and some kind of "look at me I am trying to be cool" haircut. Much I suspect like Moondog is describing.

expatinscotland · 24/05/2011 10:12

I agree, noddy. I ran this list by my Scottish, manual-worker husband last night. He didn't know what half these shoes were and so I showed him and said, 'Would you wear these?'

'Would I fuck!' was the response I got.

:o

He wears his kilt for all dress occassions.

StroppyDad · 24/05/2011 11:57

Well, I own:

Converse (several pairs and colours)
Black pointy work shoes
Black pointy smart shoes (I guess, I like pointy shoes!)
Black non-pointy Oxford types
Military style boots (actually, two pairs. Hmmm.)
Blue Desert Boots
Espadrilles (blue and black)

Hate sandals and flip-flops. Used to have some Chelsea boots and this thread makes me think I will do so again...

Also own some activity shoes (running trainers, cycling shoes, walking boots) but only use them for the intended purpose.

This sounds like quite a lot, but if you looked at my wife's collection....
