Are Fit Flops a fashion crime?

I always avoided them. And then I was bought a pair, and now I don't wear anything else during the day!

I'd always bracketed them with Crocs (comfy but very unstylish). Apart from the fact I have lost the ability to walk in heels and find regular shoes uncomfortable, I have now convinced myself they look OK... but I am concerned I am being swayed by the comfort factor. What do you think?

Wear what you damn well like. If you feel good you can enjoy what you are doing without your feet hurting. Far more important me thinks...

dexter73 · 17/05/2011 11:02

I don't think flip flops are fashionable though. They are just what people wear in the summer like ballet pumps or sandals.

sahm3 · 17/05/2011 11:06

i only wear them on holiday! lol! I dont like them, but for going back and forth to the pool/beach they are easy.

orangina · 17/05/2011 11:07

Yes. They have joined linen draw string trousers as a mumsy cliche.

Doesn't mean to say you can't wear them, but in terms of FASHION.....

Smile (you asked....!)

orangina · 17/05/2011 11:08

(I'm talking about FIT flops, not FLIP flops btw.....)

alfabetty · 17/05/2011 11:08

Dexter, I mean the Fit Flops - the big chunky soled flip flops. Regular flip flops look OK for casual. It's the big marshmallow sole that's got me thinking I may be looking a bit too... mumsy? Comfort over style?

And while I'm very happy with my comfy feet, I do have some nicer outfits, lighter dresses & skirts, and I wonder if I'm ruining the look with the Fit Flops.

Cross-posted orangina. You have confirmed my worst fears... Wink

Now if you want to be fashionable you should be wearing these!!

TheReturnoftheSmartArse · 17/05/2011 11:10

Definitely a fashion crime. But who cares? They are the most comfortable shoe on the planet and it's like walking on a cloud! Grin

polyhymnia · 17/05/2011 11:10

There's just been a massive thread on FFs where the arguments for and against them have been thoroughly debated! I agree with dexter - they aren't the height of fashion (if they ever were) but they are now a pretty well established summer option.

I'm a fan - on comfort grounds - but also still feel reasonably stylish when I'm wearing a pair I think complements my outfit and what I'm doing.

clayre · 17/05/2011 11:11

My mum wears them, shes early 50s, should have been arrested by the fashion police many years ago and has a huuuggggeeeee bunion and fit flops are the only shoes that she can wear!

dexter73 · 17/05/2011 11:12

Fit flops just look like flip flops but with a slightly thicker sole. There isn't really any difference between them imo.

orangina · 17/05/2011 11:12

Sorry alfabetty.... but its best to know where you are with these things.... Grin

Lipstickgal · 17/05/2011 11:13

Nigella wears them. In red. She always looks great. She has her own style mind and doesn't worry if something is on trend .

alfabetty · 17/05/2011 11:17

But they are better than Crocs....yes?

OP posts:
TheReturnoftheSmartArse · 17/05/2011 11:21

Oh, waaaay better than Crocs. They should only worn by children IMHO.

anon4now · 17/05/2011 11:21

I live in a very hot country and everyone wears them here (a small minority stick to havaianas). Yes, better than Crocs, which I think are kids' shoes....

Lipstickgal · 17/05/2011 11:23

Who are the fashion police that you think are judging you so harshly? What qualifies them to tell you what is or isn't acceptable? It's hardly an order of public decency so if you like them...work it 'girlfriend'.

alfabetty · 17/05/2011 11:32

Oh, I agree one can disregard the fashion police, I've always dressed to suit myself rather than following fashion. But my concern is that FF are not very stylish, and certainly not elegant.... just trying to work out how far wide of the mark I am!

Quite a long way, it would seem. But not in croc territory just yet [relieved]

DH laughs because my shoe collections ranges from Jimmy Choo to havaianas but now includes one (very worn) pair of Fit Flops. I don't know if I can go back to regular shoes... Wink

they're so comfy i wear them for everyday
i have plantar fasciitis and i can walk ages in them without pain
pain on my face is uglier

SoupDragon · 17/05/2011 12:45

I have a pair of Next rip-off Fit Flops. Now, I wouldn't wear them "out" IYKWIM but for everyday wear they are fab. Mine have sparkly siver flowers on them so look a little less practical than the ordinary ones. Waaaaay better than crocs mind you.

ggirl · 17/05/2011 12:49

i want these ones
out and proud

ninah · 17/05/2011 12:53

hideous but comfortable, your call

Ambernj1 · 17/05/2011 13:06

As I understand it they are a fashion crime, but I have 3 pairs and they are very kind to my feet and back, which are currently withstanding the strain of 33 weeks worth of bump.

I actually think a lot of the new range is quite pretty - the Manyanos are exclusive to net-a-porter ffs, so they can't be that bad (or so I tell myself).

I try to offset their mumsiness with lots of fabulous clothes and accessories...

teej · 17/05/2011 13:16

ggirl i have those and love them
