Would a chic french woman wear leggings?

Am having disagreement with a friend who thinks leggings are very sexy and chic with a knitted dress or similar.

I am saying no.

He says french women would wear them and they are 'chic' and I am wrong.

am I?

I say skinny jeans are better.

Bonsoir, where are you when I need you?

No, I don't think they would. Very slim, cigarette pants maybe, but not anything stretchy.

mon dieu

You are so right. Tell Gok Wrong to jog on.

winnybella · 13/05/2011 23:12

Well...there are Parisians who wear them...whether they are chic, not sure Hmm Skinny jeans much more popular.

(live in Paris)

There's a huge difference between a French woman and a Parisenne surely? Your average 50 year old burgundy home dye in Clermont Ferrand would love leggings wouldn't she?

thenightsky · 13/05/2011 23:26

ahahha.. he has backed down... i've won.

Thanks S&B MNers Grin

Ok, just spotted the word "chic" in thread title now

thenightsky · 13/05/2011 23:28

would any 50 year old wear leggings though... french or otherwise?

Knofje · 13/05/2011 23:33

Yeah, my MIL does. I think she's 54, most chic but Dutch, not French.

Because they don't want to expose their legs? I don't get the hostility really. Chicness isnt about one item, it's about a whole look. ( I would have thought)

whoneedssleepanyway · 14/05/2011 06:51

My cousin is a very chic Parisian model and wears leggings and makes them look fantastic...

Lots of uber chic mamans in our yard, and it is true that they favour slim jeans and trousers. Although our babyminder wears legggings.

biryani · 14/05/2011 18:05

'Scuse me - I'm 51 and wearing leggings!! Am I mutton??

hattymattie · 14/05/2011 18:24

I live in Paris western suburbs and am thinking very hard - I can't remember seeing leggings anywhere - on young or old - it's all skinny jeans on the young and straight or cropped trousers on the old(er).

munkysea · 14/05/2011 18:54

I knew a French lady who wore them back in 2004... she was not chic.

Jonnyfan · 14/05/2011 20:59

I work with a very chic and slim French lady who wears leggings, and her Maman also does- I know because I asked her whether someone my age (fifty ahem..) could possibly wear them!

higgle · 15/05/2011 10:42

I've posted before that lots of 80+ ladies now wear leggings under dresses. This is for warmth and to avoid showing their knickers if they have a fall.

trixymalixy · 15/05/2011 10:45

Legging and chic do not belong in the same sentence.

And I wear leggings all the time.

animula · 15/05/2011 11:10

Lucia van der Post recommended leggings a while back. She is chic, 50+, though not French.

polyhymnia · 15/05/2011 11:36

Just come back from the Left Bank of Paris and don't recall seeing any French women in leggings. Not surprised.

Having said that, I, despite advanced age, have just this spring started to wear them occasionally as a casual look under long tunics or dresses around our suburb (not on my commutes to central London) and must say they are very comfortable and seem to look OK - as DH, who is quite a helpful critic, agrees.
