Cutting off long hair stops your face looking fat apparently - talk to me about tonight's hair cut...

I read an article on MSN a week or so ago which claimed that having long hair can drag your features down, and that shorter hair is more flattering.

Now as it happens, I've got an appointment tonight, and as I've had long hair for years am a bit bored and debating chopping it right off...

I don't have a particularly fat face, but I'll take any help I can get.

There are just a few things that I want to establish about new short hair:

  1. I don't want a Posh bob or anything like that. My style in general is a bit scruffy laid back and I don't want anything to sensible looking as it'll not work
  1. Am I going to regret chopping off long wavy (though bloody scruffy and annoying) hair and spend the rest of my 30's with a short sensible mum cut?

I might have a bash at uploading some pictures - I need to get it straight in my head what I'm asking for...

I suppose, what I'm asking (in around about, dithery sort of way) is, do we think it is true that shorter hair is more flattering? And does anyone have any pics/suggestions for shorter styles? I've 98% decided I'm going to take the plunge and chop it all off, but it's a lot of hair and the 2% is making me over-deliberate...Confused

oops

cherryburton · 11/05/2011 13:42

ooh, Bohica - your hair looks good. That was a drastic cut for you too, must have taken some getting used to not having all that hair there! Grin

I probably should have mentioned that I will not be arsing about styling my hair, all I've done the last few weeks is chuck some frizz ease in it before it dries and left it to its own business.

Hence I currently look like a folk singer. I'm debating uploading a pic of it in its current shabby state but it really is a big mess. Will deffo take before and after pics though in case I need to sue the hairdressers afterwards ....

snowmummy - yours sounds good, what's it like?

AuntieMaggie - her hair looks great but I don't think I cut pull off anything quite as short, am not elfin enough. Or lack strong features. Or something. Envy

neither am I cherry and I didn't think I could go so short before I took the plunge and did it!

MrsSeanBean · 11/05/2011 16:02

If you are at all unsure, don't do it; or if you do, go shorter gradually. IMHO long hair can be flattering on all ages / face shapes. That's not to say it does look good on everyone. I think it's more to do with attitude and personal style.

The great bonus of long(er) hair is its versatility. You can wear it long (down) or short (up).

Also, think about time. Short hair normally needs longer / more attention to make it look good.

HTH and good luck whatever you decide :)

cherryburton · 11/05/2011 16:08

Right, I have just put the most recent picture I have on my profile, it's not very good but you get the general idea...

OP posts:
ggirl · 11/05/2011 16:10

you have no profile yet cherry

cherryburton · 11/05/2011 16:11

bugger, how about now?

OP posts:
ggirl · 11/05/2011 16:11

v small photo though
I like your hair from what I can see

cherryburton · 11/05/2011 16:12

MrsSeanBean · 11/05/2011 16:13

It looks great as it is. Not at all ageing.

i think you should keep it long
just have a trim
change the way you style it rather than chop it off

cherryburton · 11/05/2011 16:15

Oh dear god. I'm a Libran you know, I'm practically paralysed by the indecision...

Am also getting it coloured tonight and I haven't even started to open that can of worms yet. I dyed in darker a few months back (to cover the ever increasing number of grey ones!) but now I think I want to go back a bit lighter...

ggirl · 11/05/2011 16:17

hahaha
just tell hairdresser you're bored
want to change something but not the length so much
see what she suggests

Do it!

My hair grows really quickly, so I've had the radical long hair to short cut a bunch of times and always been really glad.

If you get a good cut and specify that you want something that is easy to look after it will be (literally) a weight off your shoulders. Of course, a lot depends on the hairdresser. Someone good will give you a cut that looks good even if not styled and that grows out nicely. Someone shit will give you a cut that looks good when you walk out of the salon but crap as soon as you wash it.

cherryburton · 11/05/2011 16:20

I really, really hope this hairdresser knows what they're doing. It's a Groupon haircut and have never been to this place before.

OP posts:
snowmummy · 11/05/2011 17:06

Cherry, its difficult to explain but I'll try: Its cut short into my nect at the back, just covering my ears at the sides, longer bits at the front, with a very heavy strong shaped fringe around my face and its all layered. I'll try and find a similar picture later if that helps?

KeepCalmAndCurryOn · 11/05/2011 18:18

Cutting off my head would stop my face looking fat.

snowmummy · 11/05/2011 19:22

Bit drastic though keepcalm Wink

snowmummy · 11/05/2011 22:43

So what did you have done then OP?

cherryburton · 12/05/2011 11:23

I had it cut to just above shoulder level but I think I look like a mushroom.

Will post a picture in a bit...probably... Sad

I like the feel of having shorter hair, it just looks a bit triangular .

OP posts:
FanjoForTheMusic · 12/05/2011 11:45

Did it look good when it was dried in the salon? My hair goes triangular very easily (fine but lots of it, and wavy). It sounds weird, but when my hair was longer I used to just dry the roots to give them some lift, and twirl the rest of it into waves and let it dry (or use the diffuser without touching the hair). This seemed to work.

Poor you, being unhappy with a haircut is awful. Sad

Face any thinner though..? Grin
