And preferably I would like to be able to order them online as I can't face another trek into town. Help please!!

And no trainers please.

I think Sketchers have started their own version of Toms, called Bobs!! I may have dreamt this though

AnyFucker · 09/05/2011 10:54

Grin at Bobs

I fancy some Freds

Fimbo · 09/05/2011 10:54

I have a new pair of the Birkies Gizeh and they have given me blisters. Yet my rip off pair from Primark which cost £4 don't.

I think converse are comfortable, I walked miles around Cornwall and Scotland in mine.

Fimbo · 09/05/2011 10:58

Ah I didn't realise those things were called TOMS. I saw a young bloke with some on yesterday with those trousers with the crotch that hang down with very tight legs (are they peg legs?) and between the trousers and the shoes when he was walking he looked like he had been stung on the bum by a bee.

ggirl · 09/05/2011 10:58

toms look like slippers

mittenkitten007 · 09/05/2011 11:00

Grin at Fimbo "stung on the bum by a bee."

so, so true . . . .

AnyFucker · 09/05/2011 11:00

the soles of Toms are leather so comfy underfoot, but the uppers are plain old canvas

they rub like hell when your feet sweat/swell

Emo76 · 09/05/2011 11:01

Blochs ballet flats - have a pair which have never rubbed with bare feet.

My Havianas gave me a blister between my toes!

AbsDuCroissant · 09/05/2011 11:15

Havaianas - they're what I wore around, and they were fine (despite walking about 8 hours a day).

Only problem was, it got might chilly when the sun wasn't out, but this was April. You shouldn't have this problem in the summer

celticlassie · 09/05/2011 18:17

I just ordered these. Should be comfy.

reddaisy · 09/05/2011 21:31

Wow! Thanks for all the replies and especially the links as I am lazy when it comes to shopping! I have ordered some Birkenstocks and I am going to get some prettier flip flops and sandals for occasions when I won't be trekking for miles.

I swear by reef flipflops. They are around $20 from lord and taylor in midtown. Lots of different ones to choose from. Very comfortable and you can walk for miles in them. For the evenings you will need a covered shoe as it goes down to around 55F.

It is currently 70F with little to no humidity. Pollen is high this week so bring your zirtek as it is more expensive here compared to the UK. Bring a cardigan or two for evenings. You don't need a jacket or a coat.

Want2bSupermum · 09/05/2011 21:37

oh and on your first day go get a pedicure. It shouldn't cost you more than $20. Please don't be part of the myth that English girls don't groom.

reddaisy · 09/05/2011 21:52

Don't worry Want2bSupermum, I have regular pedicures, I wouldn't dream of baring my toes without being nice and tidy and I'm too lazy to do it myself.

Are you in NY then? I am coming at the end of the month so I was hoping it wouldn't be too chilly.

Glad to hear you groom!

In my humble opinion May and the beginning of June is one of the best times to visit NYC followed by late September, early October. It is 70 for the rest of this week with a little rain (30% chance which normally means a light drizzle) expected on Saturday.

SunnilyEnough · 10/05/2011 13:10

Silver Madrid Birkenstocks and/or Japanesey type flip flops.

mrsrhodgilbert · 10/05/2011 13:13

Has nobody heard of Mephisto sandals? I can't wear birkies as I seem to have narrow feet and find them far too wide. Mephisto sandals are a similar idea but French and narrower in fit. I got my first pair a few years ago when Hobbs were stocking them. They are not as widely available as birkies but come in a huge range of colours, lots available on the internet, just not well represented on the high street which means you are unlikely to find too many others wearing the same thing. There are at least 2 shops in London. They have seen me comfortably through several city breaks in great comfort.
